Baldur’s Gate 3’s fifth major post-launch patch is set to launch sometime before the end of the week, and based on everything that developer Larian Studios has said about it so far, it looks like it’s going to be quite a significant update. And while full details on what it will bring to the acclaimed RPG aren’t available just yet, Larian’s director of publishing Michael Douse has confirmed that performance improvements will be included.
Taking to Twitter, Douse revealed that Patch 5 will bring performance improvements to both PC and PS5 versions of Baldur’s Gate 3, and that, interestingly enough, Larian was able to make those improvements thanks to the work it has been doing to optimize the RPG’s upcoming Xbox Series X/S version.
Earlier this month, Larian Studios CEO and game director Swen Vincke revealed that thanks to work on the game’s Xbox Series S-specific optimizations, Baldur’s Gate 3 had seen a 10% reduction in RAM usage and a 34% reduction in VRAM usage.
Meanwhile, Douse has also said that the aforementioned performance adjustments are actually going to be “the least exciting thing in Patch 5”, which, according to him, is going to bring several features to the game that Larian has been working on for a while. More details are expected to arrive in the near future, so stay tuned.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s Xbox Series X/S version will release in December, with a release date set to be announced at The Game Awards on December 7. The game will also get a physical launch in Q1 2024.
What’s more, performance improvements are coming to both PC and PS5 on behalf of all the work that’s gone into optimising for Xbox. That’s exciting, but also maybe the least exciting thing in Patch 5, to give you an idea of how exciting it is. More tomorrow.

Larian Studios has explained why Baldur’s Gate 3 might never come to Xbox‘s Game Pass subscription service.
If you’ve been holding out hope that Baldur’s Gate 3 might find its way onto PC Game Pass in the future, I’ve got some bad news for you: it’s very unlikely to happen.
After a period of some uncertainty, Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available on Xbox Series X/S, which begs the question – could the smash hit RPG ever end up on Xbox Game Pass? Baldur’s Gate 3 is exactly the kind of high-engagement title that could potentially drive long-term Game Pass subscriptions, so I’m sure Microsoft would love it, but according to Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke, it’s not happening.
Swen Vincke, the director of Baldur’s Gate 3 and CEO of Larian Studios, has spoken out about the role-playing game’s lack of Xbox Game Pass release, saying that it was a decision made «from the get-go.»
Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian decided "from the get-go" that the mammoth RPG wouldn't be coming to Xbox or PC Game Pass, and that isn't going to change.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available on Xbox Series platforms, but don’t expect the game to make its way to Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service anytime soon.
Larian Studios has released a new hotfix for Baldur’s Gate 3, which brings Patch 5 and its features – like the new Epilogue and Honour Mode – to Mac players. There are also fixes for various issues, starting with a potential crash that could occur in Honour Mode when trying to load a save file.
The critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3 is available now for Xbox Series X/S after launching for PC and PS5. Of course, the question now is whether it would ever arrive on Game Pass at some point. In an interview with IGN, game director and Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke said it’s not happening.
Larian's CEO and founder Swen Vincke has shared the rough full text of his Game Awards 2023 acceptance speech for Baldur's Gate 3's Game of the Year trophy, after having his thoughts cut short by the event's crowded scheduling, which allotted more time to Kojima chitchat, trailers and celebrity cameos than the actual award-winners.
An issue on Xbox causing saves to disappear has now been fixed.

The Game Awards 2023 was a massive night for games, with more than 30 announcements, premieres, and more. It ended with developer Larian Studios taking home the Game of the Year award for its critically acclaimed RPG, Baldur's Gate 3. Shortly after the win, Larian revealed that the game was now available on Xbox Series X/S, meaning it's finally playable on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
