Prince of Persia fans are really feasting this year. We've already seen the release of the well-received Metroidvania Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, but Ubisoft just announced another game in the franchise. The Rogue Prince of Persia is a team-up with Evil Empire, the developers behind the iconic roguelite Dead Cells. It comes to Steam early access on May 14.

In order to beat Giovanni in in May 2024, you will need to prepare your strongest creatures in order to counter his lineup. Most of his selected creatures are fixed, which is very helpful when building a proper three-Pokémon party to fight him, but there is one random element in his selections that can significantly impede your progress. After his Metroidvania adventures in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which came out in January, gaming's iconic dual-blade wielding royalty is coming back for seconds in The Rogue Prince of Persia, a new 2D action-platforming rogue-lite title, arriving in Early Access on Steam on May 14. Developed by Dead Cells maker Evil Empire and published by Ubisoft, the next Prince of Persia game flaunts a colourful, cartoony art style and features platforming and action combat familiar to the series.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Ubisoft's latest Metroidvania action-adventure platformer, assimilates elements from these games and subgenres to tread familiar ground, but it does so in its own unique ways.

The Prince of Persia series made its grand return last week with The Lost Crown, an excellent Metroidvania that learns from and improves upon some of the genre’s best games. It’s got an entertaining story to boot, which plays around with the concept of timelines without defaulting to a contrived multiverse story like Mortal Kombat 1. All its time travel and frequent flashbacks can make the story hard to parse at times, though.

It’s fair game to say that Nintendo fans have been eating well, but will their appetite be satisfied going into 2024? Fans across all platforms should have plenty to be excited for and these represent some of the platform games that Wccftech considers highly anticipated throughout the new year.

Days into 2024 and we’ve already got a strong contender for Game of the Year. Yes, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is that good. I want to get back to playing as quickly as possible so I’ll keep this brief.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is due to release in just a few days on January 15, but after briefly jumping through the Metroidvania's new demo, some hopefuls are already convinced that it's the refresh the series needed.

Beginning in 1989, the Prince of Persia series enjoyed consistent attention, with its longest break between releases being six years between Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame and the better-left forgotten Prince of Persia 3D. 2003’s Sands of Time and its two sequels marked a new era for Prince and, in many ways, laid the foundation for Ubisoft’s most successful franchise, Assassin’s Creed. The 2008 Prince of Persia reboot didn’t reignite the series as Ubisoft had hoped, and 2010’s Forgotten Sands felt closer to a movie tie-in than a new, proper entry.

I fell in love with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time way back in 2003, when it helped redefine 3D action-adventure games with its clever rewind ability enhancing its environmental puzzles and fast, acrobatic combat. But while the aughts saw a bunch of sequels with similar elements, none ever quite hit the same heights as The Sands of Time – and the 2010s were a parched desert for the series. But like an oasis, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown finally nails what I loved about those classic Prince of Persia games, and it does so by placing the series' best ideas within a 2D Metroidvania framework that calls back to the roots of the 1989 original.

Time waits for no one – or franchise for that matter. Yet, 14 years after the last release, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown heralds the return of the popular action-adventure series rife with mind-boggling puzzle sections and deadly traps. To say the feedback toward the latest Ubisoft release has been unanimously positive would be an outright lie. Some fans aren’t happy about the new protagonist named Sargon or the Metroidvania 2.5D gameplay mechanics that’s a major departure from 2010’s Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. It’ll be interesting to see what the final reception is like when people actually play the game, but it’s likely this will go down as a divisive title when all is said and done.

Giovanni is still in Pokemon Go and this boss battle is still a tricky one – especially as he changes his tactics every month. You can never just rest on your comfortable laurels when taking him on.

The Prince of Persia has had it rough in the past few years. Following the release of the 2008 game, which rebooted the franchise for the second time and its direct sequel, the series has been pretty much dormant, with Ubisoft releasing only some minor titles. The indefinite delay of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake seemed to be the final nail in the coffin for one of the longest-running series still active today.

I recently had the opportunity to dive into a roughly three-and-a-half-hour hands-on preview of the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and I had no idea what to expect.

Prince of Persia games were once a big enough deal that they made them into a movie, controversially starring Jake Gyllenhaal. In fact, prior to the arrival of Assassin’s Creed in 2007, Prince of Persia was probably Ubisoft’s premier franchise, due in large part to the reputation of 2003 classic The Sands of Time. But the series has fallen on hard times. There hasn’t been a significant Prince of Persia release in the 13 long years since 2010’s The Forgotten Sands, while a planned remake of The Sands of Time has gone back to the drawing board.

Fortnite is most definitely a videogame, but the incomparable success of Epic's battle royale has led to it becoming something of (sorry) a platform too.
