There are many things to enjoy about Super Mario Bros Wonder. One of the biggest elements of its success in fans’ minds is that it took the “traditional style” that 2D platforming Mario games have and turned it on its head via the power of the Wonder Flower. These “levels within levels” always threw fans for a loop, leading to incredible experiences and always wondering what would happen in the next level. I've been playing a ton of Super Mario Bros. Wonder over the last couple of weeks (in addition to the hands-on I had as a part of our current cover story), and the review embargo has officially lifted. However, due to restrictive embargo guidelines that don't allow us to discuss large portions of the game, we have opted to hold our final review until the game is available for purchase. With that said, I did want to share some brief thoughts within the confines of the embargo.

As a series that has been around for nearly four decades, Super Mario Bros. should have shown signs of slowing down years ago. But continuous thoughtful reinvention has helped the franchise remain a genre leader. Super Mario Bros. Wonder represents the next step of evolution, delivering the tight, tried-and-true gameplay in the context of the most creative 2D entry in nearly 30 years.

Famitsu has released its combined two-week sales data for hardware and physical software sales in Japan for the period from December 18 to December 31, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder has taken the top spot in the final charts for the year. The 2D platformer sold over 221,000 units over the course of the two-week period, and is followed in second place by Konami’s Momotaro Dentetsu World: Chikyuu wa Kibou de Mawatteru!, which sold over 192,000 units.

It’s hard to believe that Super Mario Bros Wonder came out several months ago. The title was one of the last “big games” to be released in 2024, and it made quite an impact when it was released. That was largely due to the power of the “Wonder Effect,” which blew everyone away, thanks to the creativity of the Nintendo team in making these “modified levels” as fun as possible. The team even noted that they “took their time” developing the title to have a fresh feel and be something gamers couldn’t help but keep playing.

is already the most mind-bending and chaotic example of any game, yet it could be even more so with one tech-enhanced feature. The game brings Mario and his friends to the Flower Kingdom, where they witness Bowser take control of the magical Wonder Flower and transform not just Prince Florian's castle, but the entire kingdom, into a weirdly dark and sinister land. Naturally, Mario's crew eagerly jumps in to help defeat Bowser. Along the way, they get to see just how weird things can get with the Wonder Flower's mystical magic, which is somewhat more of a psychedelic, drug-induced episode than any traditional ideas of witchcraft.

While it didn’t reach the top spot in Gfk’s UK physical sales charts for the week ending December 23rd, Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder still performed very well. It ranked second, overcoming Hogwarts Legacy (which dropped to third).

2023's is the perfect game to play with friends and family with lots of multiplayer options available, including some unique workarounds to allow friends and strangers to enjoy the game together if they choose. Though it is still not the type of online multiplayer that generally comes to mind, the ability to play with others throughout the world is a step in the right direction for Nintendo.

There are many fun features and abilities that the new power-ups can provide, and the mystical distortions of the Wonder Flower can turn everything upside-down. This makes even some of the most outrageous myths online sound fairly plausible for a game where pretty much anything can happen.

It's the end of the year, which means it's almost time for The Oscars. Shortlists for potential nominations have recently been making their way onto social media, including the award for Original Song, which many thought could be won by The Super Mario Bros. Movie for Bowser's very silly yet memorable love song 'Peaches'. Unfortunately, it's been snubbed entirely.

Well, it seems this time around, there was a clear winner.

Nintendo is a unique game developer — sometimes to a fault. Over the years, much of its genius, and the timeless brilliance of its games, has rested on the fact that it operates in a bubble, designing games unlike any others and influencing only itself. It’s immune to fashion and can be very innovative in its own, off-the-wall ways. But it has also sometimes been left behind by seismic shifts in gaming that barely caused a ripple within the serene white box of its Kyoto HQ.

More than a month on from its launch, the first patch for Super Mario Bros. Wonder is now available, and it’s quite a minor one.

The Flower Kingdom adventures of have entertained fans of classic side-scrolling platforming action, but some veteran Mario aficionados were concerned that Prince Florian might have held a secret that would be bad news for the high-jumping plumber. Florian is a diminutive creature with a body similar to a Wiggler, the caterpillar-like entities introduced in. Wigglers are shown with flowers growing from their heads, which makes Florian’s design a good fit for the royalty of the Flower Kingdom. However, the Flower Kingdom appeared much earlier in an obscure chapter of Mario’s history, and that connection could have set Prince Florian up as a potential rival.
