Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.5 launched with the final tier of its Myths of the Realm Alliance Raid earlier this month, and it’s still packing secrets to discover. The new 24-man raid apparently has a little easter egg for players familiar with the MMO’s fishing lore, and it involves shooting your shot with one of the realm’s 12 gods, Llymlaen.

There’s a reason our cars aren’t also boats. It’s often as hard as it is risky to combine two very different functions into one package, especially when designing a system to do one thing well can be hard enough. That’s why, as I sat in front of my computer taking stock of the 20+ hours I spent playing Endless Dungeon, I couldn't help but smile at the sheer audacity on display. There’s no other way to describe the daring it must have taken to create this hybrid twin-stick shooting, tower defending, science fiction roguelite. Those are three very different genres all their own, so to take them all on simultaneously and make the result work so well is borderline miraculous.

Newly released documents have given us a rare inside look at how gun manufacturers have tried to use videogames to promote their wares to younger people - specifically, players of Activision's original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, released in 2009. The memos and emails in question are from now-defunct US gun company Remington Arms, which was once part of the conglomerate Freedom Group. They've been disclosed by a lawyer as part of legal proceedings launched by the parents of children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, in which 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot and killed 26 people using a Remington-made AR15 rifle.

Social media users are attempting to pass off videos of Bohemia Interactive's military shooter Arma 3 as real-life footage of the on-going Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which erupted into open war this week. Several of these mocked-up videos have circulated on Tik-Tok and Xitter, one of them purporting to show a member of the Hamas group shooting down Israeli helicopters. My Hero Ultra Rumble is a relatively new game by Bandai, featuring numerous characters from My Hero Academia duking it out in the USJ center. I'm a known strategy-game turtler, which means that I'll spend as much time shooting arrows off the top of a great big stone wall as games like Age of Empires 4 will let me. That habit made me a big fan of 2017's They Are Billions, which condensed the RTS experience into a huge horde-defense mode, and now it's turned me towards Cataclismo, which might have the most promise of anything I've played so far in Steam Next Fest.

Call of Duty is a known quantity in many ways at this point. The era, specific weapons, and flavor-of-the-year gimmicks might change, but as we round out two decades of annual iterations, it’s not hard to guess what the next one will bring. So it’s no surprise that after playing in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer open beta on PlayStation 5 for a good chunk of the weekend, the feeling I came away with was largely, “oh yeah, this is just more Call of Duty.” That doesn’t mean I didn’t have fun, and I still have a whole lot more left to see in the final version, but so far it feels modern in name alone.

It’s a dialogue exchange that only happens when these two characters go head-to-head, and in this case, it’s appropriate. Tekken producer Michael Murray is drinking coffee and playing Azucena. I’m drinking tea and playing Lili. Michael destroys me. I don’t often play Lili, and Michael is, unsurprisingly, a very good Tekken player. But even though I lost that match, I was having an absolute blast. We were laughing, complimenting strong moments in each other’s play, sharing surprise at certain interactions, and generally having a great time.

The changes and added elements in Apex Legends never seem to end. That makes sense with the game being a service. For each season introduced, Apex Legend has a bunch of things that are altered such as new maps or reworked heroes like Revenant in Season 18. But more importantly, a new legend that often changes (breaks) the meta of Apex Legends. For the upcoming 20th Season, this is the same. We’re getting a 25th legend who goes by Conduit. Warhammer 40k Darktide is experiencing some notable issues following the deployment of its latest hotfix. The latest set of Warhammer Darktide patch notes arrived on Tuesday, October 10, with some fixes for several bugs causing the game to crash. However, following the arrival of Darktide hotfix 1.2.1, some players have lost their loadouts while others are unable to play at all, with the game crashing to desktop at launch on both Steam and Game Pass.

Go Mecha Ball is by far the coolest Steam Next Fest demo I’ve played so far, and I can’t recommend it enough. A top-down, twin-stick shooter where you can turn into a giant mecha wrecking ball that bounces around the tight playspaces while shooting at enemies, Go Mecha Ball is a fast-paced roguelike that genuinely had me upset when I got to the end of the demo. It’s a little bit Super Monkey Ball and has the bright bouncy play of something like Rocket League, it’s great.

Forgive the surprise, but 80s action movies haven't typically made for the smoothest transitions to modern video games. Predator had Predator: Hunting Grounds, for instance, "a naff waste of great material". Terminator had Terminator: Resistance — "generic and boring". The infamous Aliens: Colonial Marines was admittedly followed by Alien Isolation and the enjoyable enough, fun-flamethrowing-with-friends of Aliens: Fireteam Elite, but still. When RoboCop: Rogue City was announced and subsequently delayed back in 2021 by Polish developer Teyon — the studio behind Terminator: Resistance and its sumptuously awkward first-person sex scene, no less — I can't, personally, say I was too optimistic.

Action tends to fall between two extremes, tactical and arcade.  In tactical action you bide your time waiting for the right moment to make your move, assessing the enemy’s movements for an opening and then exploiting it for all it’s worth, while in arcade games you do the same thing but really fast.  Go Mecha Ball falls squarely into the latter camp of game design, with a kitty-mech stomping through battle arenas and shooting down all the rogue glitch-bots in its path.  Which is a fairly pedestrian thing for a kitty-mech to do, so it also rolls up into a ball to smash, bounce, crash, and beat on any bot that’s unlucky enough to get in the way.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the latest in Ubisoft’s blockbuster series, and a bit of a throwback to an earlier time for the series. Warhammer 40K Darktide was originally scheduled to debut on Xbox Series S|X only 'shortly' after the PC version (which landed on November 30th, 2022). Back in the 90s tech was at a crossroads, best exemplified by the rivalry of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake.  On the one hand Quake was clearly technologically superior, with full 3D environments and polygonal monsters, but the problem with pushing tech as hard as it did was that the level of environmental interactivity ended up being almost nonexistent.  Duke Nukem 3D, on the other hand, used 3D sprites for its character models and a good amount of scenery but had a big fat bag of tricks to pull from, allowing buildings to collapse and billiard balls to ricochet on a pool table.  Both games had their fans and the bickering as to which was better was endless, but Duke’s intricate levels filled with environmental set-pieces left a lasting impression even if the main character’s charm rotted away over the intervening decades.  The Last Exterminator is a love-letter to Duke Nukem 3D’s style, and the first-level demo is a destructive sprint through a city block the blond buzzcut hero would have been happy to stomp through.

One of the main new systems that Bethesda Game Studios had to implement in Starfield was ship combat. Speaking with Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price in the latest episode of The AIAS Game Maker's Notebook Podcast, Game Director Todd Howard discussed the influences (FTL and early MechWarrior games) and revealed that the studio had to make the AI 'really stupid' to get ship combat to be fun for everyone.

After nine months filled with dark and serious stories in games ranging from Diablo IV to Lies of P, I was more than a little eager to dive back into the stark contrast of stupidity and smut that is High on Life with the release of its first DLC: High on Knife. But while it certainly delivers the usual silly gags, amusingly gross and annoying characters, and some good laughs, that ride comes to an abrupt stop after only two hours, ending before I’d even fully settled back into a goofy world I’d desperately like to spend some more time in. Beyond that, the focus on Knifey, one of the more one-dimensional friends in your arsenal, doesn’t make for a particularly good story (even if he’s usually a reliable source of chuckles), and a lack of improvements to gunplay or performance are disappointing as well. I’m really glad that developer Squanch Games is making more High on Life adventures, but this brief second course doesn’t have nearly enough meat on the bones to justify dusting off my copy and reinstalling.

If we’re being a bit blunt here, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet could’ve been one of the best titles in the pocket monsters franchise had it not been for the various bugs that held it back. The WW2 shooter United 1944 struck me as a potentially interesting twist on the genre when I first heard about it back in March.
