Square Enix has been in the habit of promoting its more prominent game developers and directors to give them higher positions within the company, and it’s now handed similar promotions to another batch of key figures, all of whom have been made executive officers.

Octopath Traveler was abruptly delisted from the Nintendo Switch eShop last month, though amid confusing surrounding why the RPG was no longer available for digital purchase on the system, Square Enix provided assurances that the delisting was only temporary.

Recently, Square Enix’s 2018 RPG Octopath Traveler was suddenly and with no official communication delisted from the Nintendo Switch eShop, rendering it unavailable for purchase, even if previous owners can still redownload the game if they wish. Square Enix has now addressed the delisting, and confirmed that it’s only a temporary one, as many had speculated.

Octopath Traveler has seen an unexpected change to the game's listing on the Nintendo Switch's eShop, currently showing the beloved RPG as «Not Available.» First debuting in 2018 from Final Fantasy developer Square-Enix, the RPG saw critical acclaim following its debut for the interweaving of its eight different stories and its «HD-2D» graphics. The game was first released as a Switch exclusive, later being brought to PC and Xbox and even receiving a sequel in Octopath Traveler 2 last year. Now, however, fans are noticing an odd change to the game's Switch listing.

The gaming industry is an ever-shifting place, meaning that something you would “expect to be around forever” might not be there tomorrow. Fans of Octopath Traveler found that out the “hard way” today when they went to the Nintendo eShop page for the game and found that it’s “not available” anymore. Now, don’t panic; that doesn’t mean the game has been erased, or you can’t redownload it if you’ve already purchased the title; it just means it’s not available for a new purchase via the eShop. Over on Reddit, fans were speculating about why this would be the case at all, given that it was originally an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch in 2018.

The studio behind Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2, Acquire, has been acquired by none other than Kadokawa Corporation. In effect, this means that Octopath Traveler and Dark Souls are now under the same umbrella, as Kadokawa also owns From Software, for one.

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, the single-player JRPG, is dropping the Spring Festival on February 8th, 2024. It’s exclusively for players across South East Asia. And let me tell you, there are tons of goodies to snag in this Octopath Traveler: CotC Spring Festival!

FromSoftware owner Kadokawa Corporation has acquired Octopath Traveler developer Acquire for an undisclosed sum.

Japanese game developer and publisher Acquire, which is arguably best known for co-developing Square Enix’s 2D-HD role-playing games Octopath Traveler and its sequel, Octopath Traveler 2, has been acquired as a “wholly owned subsidiary” by Kadokawa Corporation.

Square Enix and Xbox have announced that the popular RPG Octopath Traveler 2 will be heading to Xbox and Windows early next year. The HD-2D RPG has already sold over four million copies on Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch since February. Scars of Mars is a futuristic sci-fi tactical RPG with positional combat, drawing from the likes of Mega Man Battle Network, Fire Emblem, and Triangle Strategy. Coming from Acquire Corp, the publisher and co-developer of the beloved Octopath Traveler games, in Scars of Mars you’ll take charge of a team of humanoid robots and delve through choice-driven dungeons in the style of roguelikes such as Slay the Spire and FTL.

The HD-2D RPG released on PC, PlayStation consoles, and Nintendo Switch in February.

Microsoft has revealed that Octopath Traveler II is coming to Xbox next year.

Publisher Square Enix and developer Acquire will release Octopath Traveler II for Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC via Microsoft Store in early 2024, the companies announced.

Octopatch Traveler is one of the most unique RPG game series to date with its whimsical pixel art and well-written cast of characters. The Octopath Traveler sequel was released earlier this year, taking fans of turn-based battle games by storm as it hit a perfect 10/10 rating on Steam. Despite its overwhelmingly positive reviews, some players have worried about the game’s integration of Denuvo, an anti-tamper and DRM system. Square Enix has now dropped the software from Octopath Traveler 2 on Steam.

Denuvo is a popular DRM software that easily gets slapped on for upcoming video games. However, it’s had quite a bit of flack from players, with some stressing that this DRM has proven to be problematic regarding performance issues. Regardless, the DRM has continued to be added to a wide range of popular and anticipated video games. But eventually, we do see some of these video games find the DRM being removed. That’s actually the case for one of Square Enix’s popular JRPGs that was recently released into the marketplace.
