The people who founded Rocksteady Studios have started a new development studio.

Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker, the duo that co-founded acclaimed Batman Arkham studio Rocksteady before departing to «start a new adventure together in games» in 2022, have set up a new AAA London development studio, Hundred Star Games.

After leaving Rocksteady during the development of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it looks like studio founders Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker have quietly launched a new company called Hundred Star Games.

Yesterday, Rocksteady lifted the NDA from the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Closed Alpha test, allowing participants to discuss what they played. They also provided updated system requirements for the PC version of the game, adding context (such as resolution and preset targets) to the previously released minimum and recommended specs while also detailing what will be required to run the game on 'Ultra' specs. The developers have also revealed the game will require an SSD to play, joining titles like Bethesda Game Studios' Starfield, Turn 10's Forza Motorsport, EA Motive's Dead Space remake, and CD Projekt RED's Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. The upcoming Final Fantasy XVI PC port by Square Enix is also likely to require an SSD.

On the one hand, obviously, we are and should be excited for Rocksteady's return to the Arkham Universe that it popularized through some of the greatest superhero games of all time. Obviously. But on the other hand, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League deviates from so many of the conventions that made Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight so beloved. And so many of those conventions that Kill the Justice League embraces – such as a team-based, co-op infrastructure, and a live-service-inspired post-launch content plan – have crashed and burned in other superhero games, most notably Crystal Dynamic's ill-fated 2020 Avengers title.

Being a bit blunt here, Batman Arkham Knight was not the “best ending” to Rocksteady Studios trilogy featuring Batman. The first two games were downright masterpieces, with both of them holding up to this day. However, the third game was littered with problems both in the story and within the gameplay. Anyone remember trying to drive the Batmobile efficiently? Exactly. But there was one element that made fans scratch their heads: the ending. No, not the overall plot ending with Scarecrow and Joker being defeated, but the “true ending” that you could only get if you beat every quest and side quest within the game.

The game is coming out on February 2nd, and a recent preview video highlighted the divisive nature that the game is building up before its release. In the case of Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League, the jury is still out on whether the title will be good. After all, early previews paint curious pictures of what it will be like gameplay-wise. But the biggest question that fans had is that of, “Why didn’t they just do a game about the Justice League?”

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is ditching the dark streets of Gotham for the city of Metropolis, an open-world playground that switches up more than just the colour palate.

The best part of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League after playing it for a few hours is the story, and yes, it certainly seems like you will be killing characters you know and love. Lots of death happening. That’s also a big part of the problem I have with the entire premise. I can’t help but shake that there’s no way Rocksteady is going to let this stick. Our heroes have done terrible things. There will be a time reversal mechanic, or some alternate earth timeline that comes along and washes away all of the terrible awfulness that happened during the story. From enslaving a child form of Poison Ivy, to straight up watching your heroes murder people, there’s a lot here to make you feel a bit uncomfortable about the journey you’re being taken on. And when you pair this disconnect with game mechanics straight out of the likes of Destiny, Anthem, or Marvel’s Avengers, I’m left worried about the final product coming together in a way that works. The fun just wasn’t there for me. At least not yet.

In the new year, Rocksteady returns with a fresh addition to the beloved Arkhamverse with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a third-person action shooter launching February 2 on PS5.

Thanks to a mix of creative and corporate overhaul, the sequel to a film that made over $1.15 billion has been rendered as little more than a postscript to the dissolving DC Extended Universe project. Set to be replaced by a new shared universe in the next few years, one overseen by comic book whisperer James Gunn, all that’s left now is to clear through the rubble of what was once Warner Bros.’ attempt to rival Disney at its interconnected game and see what was done right.

This week, I discovered a TikToker deliberately developing the worst game of all time—complete with impossible platforming, unskippable dialogue, and a rocket launcher that has to be reloaded 150 times between each shot. I ended that post anxious that creator Everywhere Nowhere might one day release their abomination into the world for people to actually play. I'm afraid that happened sooner even than I feared.
