It’d be fair to say Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s next-gen makeover of characters, monsters, and more from the 1997 original has been a spectacular glow-up. The modern console era has returned an iconic cast and world to us with a level of realism in gameplay that even pre-rendered cutscenes over 25 years ago couldn’t match. We asked Square Enix if they could crunch some numbers and share some insight into the changes nearly three decades of technological advancement have wrought. Here, main character modeler and lead character artist Dai Suzuki walks us through a selection of characters, creatures, weapons, and more.

Chocobo Races have been completely revamped in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth — instead of giving you almost no control over your chocobo, you’re now directly in the driver’s seat. Chocobo Racing has more in common with Mario Kart 8 than the original game. There are three levels of race tracks you’ll unlock, and the final stage is a grueling series you’ll need to finish in one sitting. We’ll say this up front for those of you still exploring Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s vast world: there are no late-game story spoilers here. As seen in its pre-release debut via a new trailer late last year, the action RPG’s theme song “No Promises to Keep” is performed in-game by Aerith. Behind the scenes though, the track was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer behind the iconic soundtracks for much of the Final Fantasy series, including Final Fantasy VII Remake. The song’s vocals were performed by American singer Loren Allred, who brought her spellbinding singing voice to the track, augmenting the beautiful—yet tragic—world of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the epic story told within it.

Weapons are totally free if you can find them in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. While Buster Sword-ing through each chapter, you’ll find rare purple chests in dungeons and other story-specific areas. These chests contain unlockable weapons, which in turn unlock unique weapon abilities. These weapons don’t just increase your stats. By equipping a weapon and using its unique weapon ability over and over, you’ll eventually master that ability, permanently unlocking it for your character.

Intimidating Legendary Fiends haunt every region in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – and these optional bosses aren’t going down without a fight. There are six regions to explore in Rebirth, and by completing Region Intel you’ll eventually unlock the location of a Legendary Fiend. Each fiend is a boss in its own right and defeating them is a chore that’s well worth completing.

Summons are powerful allies you’ll unlock as early as Chapter 2 in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. When a battle drags on long enough, a Summon Meter will appear and count down to the moment you can bring a big bad Summon to join the battle. Every character has one Summon Materia slot – and summons enhance your stats when equipped.

The ultimate challenge in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is Gilgamesh — the mysterious being from another world menaces Cloud and company throughout the game if you tackle the many Protorelic quests. Finishing those quests unlocks the hidden Gilgamesh Island where you’ll face off against some of the toughest battles in the entire game. I recommend waiting until you’ve finished the story before even thinking about taking on the bosses on Gilgamesh Island.

Sony has confirmed it's struck a deal with publisher Square Enix to make the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy a PlayStation console exclusive.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake project trilogy will be console-exclusive to PlayStation, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of second- and third-party content ventures and strategic initiatives Christian Svensson.

We’re almost at the end of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The Temple of the Ancients is packed with boss fights, and the Chapter 13 bosses are some of the toughest in the game. We’re at the penultimate chapter, so you’ll want to fully prepare your entire party for action — you’ll want to stock up on Mist Potions, Phoenix Downs and unlock those Level 3 Limit Breaks. Some classic bosses return this time around, and you’ll have to take on all the Turks with characters you might not be using as often. Players have been gushing about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth since its launch last week, and there’s a good reason for that: the game is incredible by all meaningful accounts. Take an extended trip through the Corel Mountains with two big bosses in Chapter 7. In this section, we’re taking on the Custom Valkyrie and the Gigatrice — the Custom Valkyrie similar to a boss encountered late in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The flying drone spews flames all over the arena, before cooling off to recharge. When it’s cooling, that’s your best shot to really damage this monster. The Gigatrice is even more complicated — the monster summons tornadoes that can be imbued with elemental magic. Hit those tornadoes with fire, thunder, blizzard or aera to transform them into swirling damage-dealing weapons. Lure Gigatrice into its own tornado to knock it out of the sky. Another silly sequence gets a total remix in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth — Hojo’s beach vacation gets dark when he summons his Grasptropod to kidnap your party. After earning points and unlocking new outfits for a little summer fun, the Grasptropod interrupts and starts snatching black robed men. This mechanical monstrosity is your only real threat in Chapter 6 and leads to recruiting Yuffie. She’ll help out and make a seemingly impossible boss easier.

Jenova makes a big splash on the Shinra-8 cruise ship in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The short boat sequence from the original FF7 gets a total overhaul and an impressive new boss. Down below you’ll battle mutated robed men before facing off against Jenova herself. This monstrous reincarnation is the stuff of nightmares, but don’t let her frightening appearance freak you out. This Jenova can be beaten — and here’s a few tips to help you overcome the odds.

Take on Roche for one big rematch in Chapter 4. This is an eventful section of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, sending your party to the militarized city of Junon. After the inciting events of the parade, Cloud will lead a team of Shinra Troopers deep into the depths of the walled city. If you manage to keep all your Shinra buddies alive, you’ll earn a collectible for the museum in later chapters, too. But the big problem is Roche. Before leaving the city, you’ll need to take on the motorcycle-riding maniac in a special arena.

Barret’s backstory is revealed in an emotional solo boss battle against Dyne in Chapter 8 of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The gunman has lost his mind after losing everything to Shinra and now Barret has to take care of him. If you’ve been skipping Barret and don’t have his weapon abilities unlocked, this can be a much more difficult fight. Make sure to use Maximum Fury to make this tough battle a lot easier in the second half. Next, you’ll face off against Shinra Executive Palmer in a throwdown with the Anuran Suppressor. The bouncing frog-shaped robot can be stunned with Synergy Abilities or after smacking Palmer during one of his taunts. Chapter 11 has more bosses per capita than any other sequence so far in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. There are five unskippable bosses in or around the Nibel Region — and they’re all loaded with weird gimmicks. Some of them switch affinities and unleash different types of attacks, either magic or physical, while you’re forced to fight solo. Others become immune to certain types of damage, forcing you to swap strategies on the fly. And the less said about the final boss of the chapter the better. This series of bosses will test all of your skills and force you to use under-utilized characters like Cait Sith extensively. If you haven’t been playing with Cait, you’re going to have to get used to him fast.

The toughest bosses in the game so far appear in Chapter 9 — both Specimen H1024 and Crimson Mare Mk. 2 can wipe your party if you don’t target their weaknesses. You’re stuck using specific characters for both boss fights, so don’t rely on your usual strategies. You’ll need to change things up and reset your Materia for the best chance at survival. Bring Ice Materia for the first fight and Fire Materia for use against Scarlet herself. The Specimen will slowly absorb more Mako until it unleashes a killer attack that hits your entire party — there’s no dodging this, you’ll just have to suppress it by dealing high damage while it attempts to absorb. Interrupting it is your only option. The Crimson Mare has a similar mechanic. If you don’t destroy both arms of the mech (before one is repaired) then she’ll continue to hammer you with deadly attacks. Try dealing damage to both equally before quickly crippling. Return to the Gold Saucer and take on a series of tough bosses in the Chapter 12 Arena. All the bosses are back in this bonus round — you’ll fight Don Corneo, the Turks and even President Shinra himself in one big throwdown. The Turks are exactly what you’d expect and haven’t changed much since their initial appearance, but Don Corneo is full of dirty tricks.

It’s been a miserable week for people that like weather that isn’t just varying amounts of rain, though the odd bit of hail has helped to add a little variety to proceedings.

Unlocked in Chapter 12, Cloud and friends will gain access to the Tiny Bronco. This airplane-turned-boat gives you the ability to freely roam the Meridian Sea, and with this new freedom is a quest to hunt down lost pirate’s treasure. Located on the dock of Costa Del So, the treasure chest contains a map with four lost locations. There’s a powerful fiend at each grotto guarding a valuable treasure. Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are two masterfully made retellings of the classic PlayStation RPG from 1997. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second entry in the Remake project and continues where the previous title left off, hopefully bringing answers to questions posed with it. Very early in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, you’ll be riding chocobos in the vast open-world areas of the map. Unlike the previous game, you’re not stuck in the cramped undercity slums of Midgar. You’ve got a huge world to explore, and if you want to get around faster, you’ll need chocobos. The first chocobos are unlocked automatically, but eventually you’ll need to hunt them down yourself – and these chocobo hunts get increasingly more difficult. Later in the games, getting chocobos is its own little puzzle. Instead of taming them, the tricky part is sneaking up on them.

There’s another overly complicated minigame waiting for Cloud and company in Cosmo Canyon. To earn the Protorelic this time, you’ll need to complete Gears & Gambit minigames.

Cosmo Canyon introduces a flying chocobo to make traversing this vast region just a little easier. And while flying around is pretty simple when it comes to exploration, completing the Glide De Choco minigame is a whole lot harder. There are techniques the game really doesn’t explain required to complete these three challenges, and we’re aiming to get the best score possible. If you want to get some valuable rewards, you’ll want to fly through every single ring in all three training courses.

Costa Del Sol got a few upgrades in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. What was once a practically empty village in the original game has been massively expanded with lots of minigames to play and a lengthy quest requiring your party to unlock swimwear. One of the quests to unlock new outfits tasks you with finding four hidden Cactuars and taking photos. These Cactuars are really well-hidden, so we’re going to show where to find all four of them. If you’re pulling your hair out trying to find them, here’s where to look.

One of the most evil minigames from Final Fantasy 7 Remake is back to make our fingers bleed. The gym returns to the Costa Del Sol region, where bodybuilders are bulking up while catching some sun on the beach. You’ll find this minigame in Chapter 7 after you’re allowed to leave Costa Del Sol and explore the northern area of the Corel Region. The bodybuilders won’t talk to you until you’ve completed a few specific side-quests, which we’ll cover in the full guide ahead. But the real meat is actually winning. Square Enix has discovered a printing error on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth game discs printed for the Japan and Asia regions, the company announced.

Well, in Japan, a certain ‘mistake’ has come to life with how the discs were printed.

Due to an error in the manufacturing process, the “Play Disc” and “Data Disc” labels on the two discs in Japanese physical edition of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth have been printed on the opposite discs, Square Enix announced.

Square Enix showed off 20 more minutes of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth during a special State Of Play stream last night, and holy heck, they sure are bringing it with the mini-games in this one. There's a whole Gwent-like card game called Queen's Blood (watch out Triple Triad), dolphin ride obstacle courses, playing with Mooglets, the return of Intergrade's Fort Condor battles, a strange bit of chicken wrangling, photographing Red XIII, frog jumping... and that's before we even get to all the stuff at Gold Saucer. Honestly, Like A Dragon better watch out, as Rebirth is clearly making a play for its mini-game crown in this second part of Squeenix's Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, and man alive, I'm so very here for it.

PlayStation has announced the year's first State of Play games showcase event, set to stream January 31. The 40-minute showcase will feature extended looks at Shift Up's action-adventure title Stellar Blade and Team Ninja's action-RPG Rise of the Ronin, both of which will arrive on the PS5 this year. The State of Play event will cover over 15 games in total, providing more details on PS5 and PS VR2 titles releasing in 2024 and beyond. The event will be livestreamed on PlayStation's YouTube, Twitch and TikTok channels, starting Wednesday, January 31 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm GMT, or 3:30am on Thursday in India.

The director of Final Fantasy 8 has shot down hopes that the next numbered Final Fantasy might see a remake once the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy comes to its conclusion. The reason? Simply that it’s a lot of damn work.
