Earlier in the year, successor may have seemed like a potential game of the year, but 2023 has seen many exciting, refined, and innovative games released since then that make the latest title feel lackluster. Compared to ’s marriage of the renowned JRPG series with silky smooth combat, or modernizing the beloved video game series, did far less for. Essentially bolting a clunky item fusion system onto an existing game map, simply cannot stand alongside the true gaming greats of 2023.

Although no more content is planned for , its funniest character could still make a return as the perfect villain in the next title. The series’ latest game introduced a wide variety of characters alongside returning figures, although the lack of DLC does mean that some of ’s characters have been left with unfinished stories. But on the other hand, when considering what a sequel to could entail, one of these same characters is now ideally suited for the role of an antagonist.

In a first for Nintendo's long-running fantasy series, actually provides an answer to why Link is a silent protagonist. Through over three decades of games, Link has seemingly never said a word, a facet which quickly became a cornerstone of his character. is the first game in the series to grapple with this directly, but its explanation for Link's silence isn't exactly thorough, and even highlights a major misconception about 's leading Hylian.

Among the plentiful armor sets in , one offers a glimpse at what features the next game could include. Between their base effects and the bonuses unlocked through upgrades, ’s armor sets enable new ways to explore and fight in Hyrule. By extension, it is clear that expanding on this functionality even further could have an incredible effect on the gameplay of the next title.

A new Zonai Device build in can easily match the function of Skyview Towers. Although some Zonai Devices can seem worthless in , others can be combined to great effect. The technology of the Zonai is crucial to Link’s quest in the game, but the simple application of experimentation and creativity can lead to ever-more impressive creations being produced and shared.

built on the formula that made its predecessor,, a resounding success. It kept the core features of and added new elements like Link's arm and its abilities. With the Sky, Surface, and Depths, the open-world design felt even bigger in. However, there might be one key feature that worked for both and that the next game could do without.

Now that some time has passed since its initial release, it's finally time to reckon with 's flaws. In the days after a highly anticipated game first comes out, it can be easy to get caught up in the hype, becoming selectively ignorant of its obvious shortcomings. That goes double for a sequel to a much-beloved original game. Right after its release, all the discussions about related to its incredible scope, its unbelievable new features, its differences from . In the midst of all that, it was hard to distill the few ways it fell short.

Among the various Temples featured in , one perfectly encapsulates why ‘s lack of DLC is so unfortunate. ’s Temples partially return to the classic dungeon format, which was notably absent in, although the Shrines of both games are effectively miniature dungeons in their own right. Each Temple utilizes a new mechanic to match its theme, but they can reveal more about the game than simply introducing gameplay features.

An interview with Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi has revealed some of the thought process behind the development of . For all that it expanded on the Zonai race hinted at in, left mysteries involving Sheikah technology unsolved in a way that confused and frustrated many. Of course, some mysteries have gone unanswered for decades, but in this case new information has clarified some of the more notable changes to Hyrule.

The four Regional Phenomena quests form a large part of ’s main storyline, but on close examination, these quests actually tell some incredibly dark stories. Although there are other main quests in to focus on alongside them, these quests directly lead Link to meeting four of the game’s sages, who each grant him a sage summon and ability like ’s Champion powers. Pursuing them leads Link into direct conflict with Ganondorf’s forces, confronting him with just how monstrous the Demon King’s plans are.

With sure to gain new titles in the future, the long-rumored Nintendo Switch 2 offers the perfect opportunity to bring one forgotten game to life. Despite the console still not being officially announced, recent developments suggest it is more likely than ever that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released in 2024. Of course, not every rumor can be believed, and some Switch 2 leaks are almost certainly fake, but the console undoubtedly has the potential to create an even better gaming experience than the Switch.

It appears that is hiding a Secret Stone in its map of Hyrule. Originally belonging to the Zonai, the artifacts greatly amplify the Sages’ magical abilities in . The seven known Secret Stones are mostly discovered in their corresponding ancient temples in , if not already in the possession of other characters. However, there is actually another way to see one of these mystical artifacts in .

It has long been assumed that the Barbarian Armor set found in and belonged to the Zonai tribe, but now it seems that this may not be the case. With the introduction of the Zonai King Rauru in alongside his sister Mineru, it is readily apparent that the Barbarian armor does not seem to match their culture. As a result, it seems has left yet another mystery unsolved in the world of Hyrule.

The main story in is nothing short of grandiose, but its ending took a turn that missed an opportunity for more poignancy. As a direct sequel to, at the end of which Calamity Ganon was seemingly destroyed, gets rather inventive with its narrative, choosing to tell two parallel arcs spanning untold millennia. Its conclusion is satisfying and emotional, but one change could have been for the better, though such an ending seems incredibly unlikely with the history of Nintendo's flagship fantasy series.

While is certainly one of the series' more innovative titles, it still inherits a great deal of DNA from its predecessors. Some degree of reinvention is practically expected of every game developed by Nintendo, but is a series especially susceptible to recycled elements. This is clearly by design, since each game has familiar yet refurbished locations and recurring characters of even minor importance. Familiarity is a hallmark of, even as games like experiment with motion controls, or adds a third dimension to the series' 2D roots. Ever since the series entered the 3D era, however, its combat has been largely stagnant.

With the King of Evil defeated once again, the best follow-up to would arguably be a prequel. Although there are currently no plans for to receive DLC, there is no doubt that will continue with additional titles, one of which could expand upon some of the background revealed in the most recent games. With the ending of firm on Hyrule facing a brighter future, a look into the past could prove to be the perfect next step.

As a result of the enormity of , there are countless hours worth of interesting things to do, places to explore, and Easter eggs to discover, so much so, that most players will never uncover some of the most expertly concealed content hidden around the Kingdom of Hyrule. series is known for providing Link with a dynamic, almost living and breathing world filled with a plethora of secrets to investigate and unearth, and the series' latest installment,, is no different.

The scene in which Link gets the Master Sword is a significant part in every game in which the great sword makes an appearance; however, in some, it is treated with incredibly touching and even poignant reverence. The Master Sword is an icon of the series, close to the recognizability and widespread approbation of even Link himself. Although these scenes are all exceptionally executed, some games go above and beyond when reuniting Link with his most legendary blade.

is a massive game with a plethora of quests, Easter eggs, and exciting things to do. However, many of these activities and experiences are not readily made apparent, so they must stumble upon them or search them out on their own. Although many of these secretive encounters, events, and locations are fairly easy to experience, some are incredibly rare and beyond difficult.

is an absolutely enormous game. With 139 side quests, 60 Side Adventures, and 31 Shrine Quests, there is just so much for Link to do in the latest installment from the long-running and ever-popular series. While many of these non-main story side quests are rewarding and fun, some of 's side quests just aren't, for whatever reason, worth the time or effort required to complete.

has an enormous map with a seemingly countless number of unique locations. Some of these locations hold a place of prominence in Hyrule and are easily accessible — some locations, however, are incredibly difficult to find and access. Whether due to their obscurity or the sheer difficulty in reaching them, has plenty of locations that only the most determined players will ever access.

features 152 unique and puzzling shrines, and although some shrines are terrible and should be avoided, many others are incredibly entertaining and rewarding. There are, however, a few shrines that are almost comically difficult. Whether it is as a result of challenging entry requirements, strategies, combat, or simply mind-bending puzzles, is home to some of the most complex shrines in any game from franchise.

Although has expanded greatly on the history of Hyrule with the introduction of the Zonai, it also presents a new unanswered mystery connected to the Sheikah tribe. As one of the oldest peoples to call Hyrule home, the Sheikah have a long history that is often shrouded in darkness. But although may have hinted at the Sheikah’s origins, it is ironically the present which is now lacking some crucial explanation.

wraps up the main story by the end of the game, but that doesn't mean every NPC was able to receive closure for their own issues. Naturally, it'll take time for Hyrule to recover after the damage done by the Upheaval and Ganondorf's forces. However, there are characters whose futures are more uncertain compared to Link and Zelda, who will have their hands full with repairing Castle Town.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom offers a sprawling adventure that you can easily pour well over a hundred hours into, but if you’re still hungry for more new content in the game, there’s a little bit of bad news for you.

Zelda and Link are heroes and household names at the top of everyone’s minds, given the success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomand its predecessor Breath of the Wild. But the franchise has never gotten a live-action film release — though a silly animated series was made in 1989 — even as juggernauts like Pokémon adaptation Detective Pikachu have graced theater screens. A fan is rectifying this grave injustice in the form of a trailer, that imagines The Legend of Zelda as a 1980s dark fantasy film.

It looks like Ubisoft’s cancelled sequel for Immortals Fenyx Rising would have been quite different from the type of games that the company has become known for. According to Axios, sources have indicated that Immortals 2 would have blended quite a few games together, including Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launched to widespread critical acclaim, and it currently sits as one of the highest-rated games on Metacritic. It was predictable that this would be accompanied by strong commercial success, but we are now getting an even clearer picture of just how impactful Breath of the Wild’s sequel has been.

Nintendo's financial results for Q1 2023 (April-June) are out, confirming the incredible success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The sequel to Breath of the Wild sold 18.5 million units in roughly a month and a half, considering that the quarter ended on June 30th and the game was released on the Nintendo Switch console on May 12th.

The two classic Game Boy Color games are now available on the Switch.

Nintendo has added two more classic Zelda games to the Switch.

When Nintendo announced earlier in the year that it was adding Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance libraries to the Nintendo Switch Online catalog, it confirmed that the beloved GBC duo of The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons would also be added to the service down the line. The wait for that is now over.
