Nier director Yoko Taro says that the upcoming action RPG Stellar Blade makes him "quite jealous" as he reckons it's "much better" than Automata itself – strong words of praise, if not a tad self-deprecating from Taro.
Stellar Blade is rolling out across the world today, but launch certainly isn't the end since its director has teased a crossover between the hack-n-slashin' action game and the studio's previous gacha release, best known for its - checks notes - butt-jiggling physics.
Before we dash-attack into my deals, here's a Vault-Tec sponsored PSA. The free Fallout 4 next-gen updates are rolling out now. Along with a visual spitshine (4K/60 fps for PS5 and XSX consoles) and support for ultra-wide PC screens, they add new weapons, apparel, and workshops to the Commonwealth. Wish I could say there were mad discounts still going for every store version of this game, but it seems to only be a PC affair.
As I sat down to write this review, I saw that Stellar Blade developer Shift Up had officially announced that the game would be “uncensored” in all regions. Predictably, there was much rejoicing from folks who had been drawn to Stellar Blade protagonist EVE’s shiny buttocks like moths to a flame. To be honest, I can’t blame them; she’s a shockingly attractive virtual person, a trait she shares with pretty much the entire cast of the game, who are all either incredibly hot, badass cyborgs, weird fleshy monsters, or a particularly delectable combination of two or even all three elements. However, as someone who had finished the game earlier that afternoon, I couldn’t help but laugh my sadly unshiny butt off.
Stellar Blade will be uncensored in all regions, it’s been announced.
Stellar Blade developer Shift Up quite clearly took a lot of inspiration from PS4 great NieR: Automata during the making of its soon-to-be-released PS5 exclusive, but in the case of Automata director Yoko Taro, he thinks that the student has already become the master. In an interview with IGN Japan (via Eurogamer), Taro says Stellar Blade «is a really amazing game. I'd say that it's much better than NieR: Automata.»
Since the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era, Japanese developers have struggled to keep up with their Western colleagues, as, according to the NieR series creator, they are not good at adapting technology from overseas for multiple reasons.
Nier Automata's director believes Japanese game developers have had difficulty implementing "Western systems" because it was hard for them to move away from Japanese-made game engines.
If you're after a nice price slice on Stellar Blade, today's the day to unsheathe your wallet. Why put the preorder down? For starters, it's cheaper than RRP. For finishers, famed game director Yoko Taro heaped quite a bit of praise on it, saying: "Stellar Blade is a really amazing game. I'd say that it's much better than NieR: Automata." 'Nuff said, really.
Stellar Blade has invited quite a lot of comparisons to other titles in recent weeks, ever since the game's demo officially dropped. First thought to be a Devil May Cry/Bayonetta inspired hack-and-slash, fans jumped into the game to see that developer Shift Up has actually taken a lot of inspiration from the likes of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Nier Automata.
Nier director Yoko Taro says the work that inspired Nier: Automata the most was Neon Genesis Evangelion, so much so that the RPG's story is "pretty much just a retelling of Evangelion, so there's not much originality to it."
Arguably the biggest inspiration behind the upcoming PS5 action RPG Stellar Blade isn't the gameplay of Nier Automata or the '90s vibes of classic sci-fi manga Gunnm, but an event that left director Kim Hyung Tae lingering in thought.
Yu Miyake is allegedly moving from his role as producer on the Dragon Quest series to another position within Square Enix.
Dragon Quest's series producer is reportedly stepping down from the role, and Nier's series producer could possibly replace him.
How do you follow up something like Dead Cells?
Exilesland is a new adventure RPG that has just dropped on Android. It’s a top-down crafting and survival game where you get to build a dreamy island. It’s been published by CSC Studio which is known for many cooking games like Cooking Love – Chef Restaurant and Cooking Travel – Food Truck and for other games like Kong Island: Farm & Survival and Makeover Studio – Merge Makeup.
Two months ago, Square Enix dropped the news that Nier Reincarnation would be shutting down in April. They’ve scheduled the big goodbye for April 29, and they’re sending it off with one final tribute. The last chapter Act III: Transmigration is now out for all players.
Korean developer Shift Up first made a name for itself with mobile games like 2016’s Destiny Child, a turn-based RPG, and 2022’s Goddess of Victory: Nikke, an on-rails third-person shooter. Now, Shift Up is throwing its hat into the ring of AAA game development with Stellar Blade, an action game starring a young woman named Eve who is trying to reclaim Earth from an invading alien species. The developer’s first attempt at crafting a premium console experience is already much stronger than I expected.
The NIKKE x Re: Zero collaboration will arrive on March 21st, 2024, after a version update. NIKKE players were excited and curious about the news.
Just a few days after potentially teasing a new game in the series, Nier Automata's director has followed up with another odd teaser.
Nier's series director has potentially teased a third game in the action-RPG saga.
The Nier community is currently aflutter after what some are taking to be a tease for Nier 3.
Game director Yoko Taro may have just teased a new Nier game, as fans say that the ongoing Nier music concert is heavily hinting at a sequel announcement. One attendee even says that Taro himself took to the stage at the London show, telling fans to cheer if they want Nier 3.
Nier Automata's robot-warrior queen 2B has joined the roster of fighting game Granblue Fantasy: Versus - and the collaboration is obviously going viral because of discussion around 2B's, err, posterior.
Today is the seventh anniversary of the launch of NieR: Automata in Japan, so PlatinumGames took some time to celebrate the occasion with a blog post. The studio also revealed that the game has now surpassed eight million units sold to date.
Nier Automata protagonist 2B has today joined the playable roster of skyfarers in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising.
While it may be overshadowed at the moment by its RPG counterpart, Granblue Fantasy: Relink, the formidable fighter Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is not one to sit back. Two months after the announcement trailer, Nier: Automata‘s 2B is back with a new trailer showcasing some devastating fighting and a killer version of Weight of the World.
Even to casual fans of Yoko Taro's esoteric NieR franchise, the similarities to the upcoming and eagerly anticipated Stellar Blade are apparent—both feature flashy, action-based gameplay and buxom, blade-wielding protagonists, for starters. Rather than shy away from these comparisons, director Hyung-Tae Kim of Seoul-based developer Shift Up is refreshingly forthright, proclaiming it a «great honour» to be compared to such a storied developer as Taro himself.
Stellar Blade finally got a new trailer during PlayStation's State of Play showcase earlier this month, giving us a look at the game's fast-paced combat and a release date to jot down in our calendars. Despite looking like an excellent Nier Automata-inspired, Xbox 360 throwback, most of the talk surrounding the title is all about main character Eve's body.
You might have already been won over by Stellar Blade's ultra-stylish action and even more stylish protagonist, but the director has now delved deeper into the roleplaying side of things, explaining how "you can change your Eve."
NieR Reincarnation is shutting down on April 29, Square Enix has announced. This sad day for fans of the franchise will arrive less than three years after NieR Reincarnation was released for Android and iOS devices.
NieR: Automata easily ranks as one of Square Enix’s best (and most successful) games in recent years, but six years on from the game launch, there have been little to no indications that a full-fledged sequel is going to arrive anytime soon. What does that mean for the future of the franchise? Well, the people in charge of the series certainly have every intention to keep working on it.
The Nier series will apparently continue for as long as its key producer and director, Yoko Taro, remains alive.
The producer of the Nier games says the series will continue, as long as its creative director Yoko Taro remains alive.

A new month means a fresh selection of games joining the PlayStation Game Catalog. All the titles will be playable from Tuesday, September 19. Let’s dive in.
As a longtime parry proponent, it does my heart good to see Nier and Devil May Cry-inspired open-world action game V.A Proxy taking the art of the parry to extremes once thought unachievable: literally parrying nuclear weapons.
Many new games, including NieR Replicant and Civilization VI, are joining the PlayStation Plus Extra October 2023 lineup, as per the PlayStation Blog. Some retro games, including the Star Ocean series, will be available for PlayStation Plus Premium members as well. All of these titles can be downloaded to your PS4 and PS5 on September 19.
Yes, that’s a real headline, folks: Nier Automata‘s Yoko Taro would like aliens to destroy Earth. Perhaps it’s not that much of a shock given the fact that he’s the mind behind Nier Automata and its predecessor, Replicant, the RPG games that basically see Earth descend into robot armageddon instead, but still, it’s pretty wild.
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… leads the pack of new titles coming to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium catalogue, this month. Starting September 19, all higher-tier PS Plus members can delve into a post-apocalyptic realm where machines and androids are stuck in a proxy war, and follow a brother's quest to cure his sister Yonah from a life-threatening disease. Fight back sickness-ridden monstrosities through a customisable blend of magic and swordplay, all the while accompanied by a talking book. NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… will be available on the PS4. Another standout this month is Unpacking, a calm puzzle game where you pull possessions out of cardboard boxes and decorate homes — jumping in time and across houses to slowly unspool an intimate story. It's out on PS4 and PS5.

Sony has announced the latest lineup of games coming to their PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers in September. While not huge in terms of major recent titles, the lineup is not lacking quality – subscribers can look forward to the likes of NieR Replicant, Civilization VI, Planet Coaster, multiple Vanillaware titles (13 Sentinels, Odin Sphere, Dragon’s Crown) and no less than no less then five Star Ocean games.

A gorgeous 3D Metroidvania that's "inspired by Nier Automata, Zelda, DMC, and The Witcher" is one heck of a pitch, and Anima Song From the Abyss has already fully captured my interest.
The PlayStation Plus Essential titles for September are already available, and it seems Sony will announce the next additions to Extra/Premium soon. According to leaker billbil-kun on Dealabs, several titles are coming to the Game Catalog on September 19th.
I like to think that I'm above the lure of Cool Violent Thing in Videogame these days, but when I see a lanky robot parry a nuclear shockwave with a katana as though swatting a wasp, I find myself Enthused.
With the release of the long-awaited Nikke x Nier collaboration, we now have a brand-new animation to go alongside it – and it’s in 3D!
Nier: Automata is an excellent, contemplative, and genuinely thought-provoking action RPG that just so happens to feature a caked-up android warrior with a special attack that makes her skirt disappear. Goddess of Victory: Nikke is a gacha game explicitly built for ogling the absurd jiggle physics of its own caked-up android warriors. In mankind's latest attempt to contact extra-terrestrial life by finally forcing the intergalactic police force to throw all of Earth in horny jail, the two games have combined forces to create possibly the most caked-up android warrior of all time.
If you’re a Nikke player, you’ll be more than aware of the upcoming Nikke x Nier collaboration that is due to start in the coming days. However, did you know the Pascal will be obtainable too?
It’s been a long time coming, but the Nikke x Nier Automata event will start very soon! We first reported on the teaser video in April, but we now know the official release date.
The extremely popular 2B from Nier: Automata has starred in plenty of game crossovers, including but not limited to Final Fantasy 14, Soul Calibur 6, and even Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege.
