The polls are closed and your votes counted for the PlayStation Blog Game of the Year 2023. The winners of these awards, spanning 18 categories, have been shaped entirely by player choice. A thank you to everyone who voted and – given the strength of titles released in the past 12 months – were stuck with some difficult decisions to make. And of course, our thanks to all the studios and creatives whose work have helped define PlayStation’s 2023. 

As we race to the end of the year, it’s time once again to kick off our Game of the Year awards, diving once more into over a dozen different categories and celebrating the best video games of 2023.

2023 picked up where 2022 left off when it comes to video game releases. Just like the year prior, there were no shortage of excellent launches; unlike last year, however, 2023 features a slew of Game of the Year contenders. The selection is so strong that taking the five most popular choices for 2023 GotY and stacking it against any 5-year span of actual winners might not look out of place. In a year that began with a bang in and ended with an even bigger one-two punch of and, one game stood tall: , Screen Rant's 2023 Game of the Year.

Lethal Company has enjoyed enormous success since it launched just a couple of months ago. From smashing its player record not long after releasing to being the top-selling game on Steam (where it still sits), it’s been quite the journey for indie developer Zeekerss. Now, the title could walk away with one of gaming’s greatest honors.

The Game Awards has already revealed its Game of the Year, us at Push Square are currently preparing our own end-of-year content, and now the official PlayStation Blog wants your votes across a number of PS5, PS4 categories. Live until midnight on 17th December 2023, you can help decide 18 different categories. That includes separate PS5 and PS4 Games of the Year, Studio of the Year, Best Multiplayer Experience, and more.

Voting for the PS Blog Game of the Year Awards 2023 is now open. All 18 categories reflect the best of PlayStation through this past year, which not only celebrate captivating new characters, sublime soundtracks, fantastic art direction, and much more, but also allow us a chance to acknowledge and thank creatives worldwide whose exceptional craft and hard work has brought us 12 months of extraordinary gaming experiences.  

Sometimes, the desire to fall backward through time is hard to resist. This year’s Game Awards showcase strongly brought this feeling on for me. As I watched the passionate crowd cheering on the titles that had shaped them through the year, a core memory of my own came creeping up, scented in 2006 fixation and drenched in video games that changed the tides of the industry, conventions, and the lives of sensitive young gamers. Gamers like me.

Baldur's Gate III took home the top honour at The Game Awards 2023, held early Friday in Los Angeles, besting its lead competitor Alan Wake II. The Dungeons & Dragons-based sprawling RPG, which was strongly revered by both fans and critics alike, bagged six trophies, including Best Community Support and Best Performance. The latter was collected by Neil Newbon, who played Astarion, the silver-haired vampire spawn, holding our attention with his melodramatic persona and the occasional high-pitched screeches. Meanwhile, Remedy's Alan Wake 2 won four awards across some of the most important categories, with co-directors Sam Lake and Kyle Rowley emerging as the best game directors of the year, alongside a writing/ narrative nod.

It’s been a long evening of celebrating 2023’s onslaught of incredible video game releases, and it’s all built up to this moment. The Game Awards’ 2023 Game of the Year is none other than Baldur's Gate 3.

The curtain has closed on another year of The Game Awards, with Baldur’s Gate 3 taking home the top prize – Game of the Year – at The Game Awards 2023.

The Game of the Year award at The Game Awards (TGA) 2023, abbreviated as the GOTY, has finally been revealed. The largest and most important game awards celebration was held this Thursday, December 7, and was the stage for the announcement of the winners of the best games and names from the current per category. Such categories include disputes such as Best RPG, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and much more. The biggest award, however, is the GOTY, as it nominates the title that is considered the absolute best during the year.

Well everyone, we're coming to the end of yet another year (if you can believe it!). 2023 is almost over, and that can only mean one thing: it's time to decide on the Push Square Game of the Year. Behind the scenes here on the site, we're busy collecting staff member votes and writing our own personal GOTY articles — but for the official list, we need your help.

I would say Lies of P is one of the games that came out this year that surprised a lot of people. A Soulsborne game inspired by Carlo Collodi's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio, it managed to surprise a lot of people with its great setting, surprisingly fun combat, and challenge, which is something that we have come to expect from the genre it is based on. The game received generally positive reviews across the board, and now, Apple has awarded it with the Mac Game of the Year award during its 2023 App Store Awards.

Apple has unveiled its best apps and games of 2023, with MiHoYo's Honkai: Star Rail winning iPhone Game of the Year.

MediEvil was a cult classic for PlayStation, loved by many and a great example of how weird and wonderful the PlayStation 1 era was. Unfortunately, the series co-creator James "Jay Gunn" Wilson has been finding work a little hard to come by recently, and following the sale of his original game design Bible back in May, he's now selling his Game of the Year BAFTA that he won back in 2000 for MediEvil 2 to help "keep the wolves at bay".

The UK trade body TIGA has revealed the winners of its annual awards, with Dlala Studios taking home the Game Of The Year award for Disney Illusion Island, which also won Best Social Game.

The year is coming to a close, which means it's time to lock ourselves in a room and decide, unequivocally, what the best games of 2023 were and crown one ultimate champion. Will it be The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? Or maybe Baldur's Gate 3? What about Jusant, the charming climbing game the really surprised us? The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was one of 2023's most anticipated games, so it's no surprise that it won Nintendo Game of the Year at The Golden Joysticks 2023 powered by Intel.

2023 has been quite the year for gaming. We’ve seen highs like Starfield, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Diablo 4, and success stories for indie games like Sea of Stars and Dave the Diver. We’ve seen some absolute flops too, though: Redfall and Lord of the Rings: Gollum, I’m looking at you. As we delve deeper into spooky season and winter approaches, I didn’t think there was any room for more bottom-tier games, but Skull Island: Rise of Kong might just have snatched the last place crown.

And yet, Larian Studios’ recently-released RPG sensation Baldur’s Gate 3 seems to be giving Nintendo’s open world title a run for its money- at least right now.

This year the indie developer Herobeat Studios has a lot to celebrate. Endling – Extinction is Forever is not only one year old but also the winner of the Most Significant Impact and Game of the Year awards. The Games for Change Awards commemorates people, projects and organizations that strive to have a social impact through games.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is without a doubt one of this year’s most beloved RPG games. Larian Studios put years of work into getting the game out of early access, and it has been smashing records left and right since launching. It doesn’t come as any surprise then that Baldur’s Gate 3 has already climbed the Metacritic rating rankings to the top. The Dungeons & Dragons-inspired game is currently tied with just one other game for 2023’s highest-rated spot.

As some of you may know, IGN was founded in 1996 and we began handing out our Game of the Year awards in 2001, leaving years of top games uncrowned. We decided to remedy this as part of ’90s Week, and this week’s Game Scoop decided to go year-by-year through the decade to crown a Game of the Year for each year, starting with 1990.

Diablo 4 has earned itself a big opening month, with the game becoming the second fastest-selling game of the year in Europe.
