Frostpunk fans have been waiting for a sequel to the post-apocalyptic city builder for a while, and it’s finally almost here. Developer 11 bit studios announced last month that Frostpunk 2 would be releasing for PC in July, and now, the dates for its pre-launch beta have also been confirmed.

With such a great game as its predecessor, many questions arise. Will it leave up to the hype? Can it surpass the original game? Will Frostpunk 2 be available on Game Pass? Let’s talk about that last one.

If you’re a history and government nerd like me, you’d probably be hard pressed to find a franchise that better appeals to your love of society building and tough moral quandaries than Frostpunk. Thankfully, developer 11 Bit Studios is cooking up another depressing city management simulator with Frostpunk 2, and from the 30-minute demo I saw, they appear to be doubling down on gut-wrenching decisions and brutal difficulty, and it’s got me positively giddy to get my hands on it. The demo I saw was focused solely on the freeplay mode called “Utopia Builder,” so any details of the dedicated story mode remain a mystery, but after seeing the fascinating new direction they’re taking that focuses on politics, faction management, and greatly expanded building, I’m already extremely excited to don my winter jacket and dive back into a fresh new layer of apocalyptic snow.

The original Frostpunk was a compelling blend of a city-builder and a survival game, all wrapped in a story about keeping a community alive during a global ice age. Unlike other city-builders focusing on cause and effect, however, Frostpunk's world offers no respite—either make things work or see the citizens slowly succumb to the elements and internal turmoil. This unorthodox, survivalist take on a city-builder presented a harrowing story of surviving the apocalypse, all defined by your actions.

Between Frostpunk 2 and Cities Skylines 2, city builder fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming months. A stalwart of PC gaming, it’s always intensely satisfying, poring over your intricate topographical and urban designs, then sitting back to marvel at your architectural creations. But even games like Civilization and Command and Conquer, which blend building and extensive strategy, invite a kind of efficient, sometimes detached approach, where you care more about maximizing success and productivity, and less about the personality of what you’re developing.
