I last wrote a list of my Top 10 games of all time back in 2017. My tastes have certainly changed quite a bit over the last 6+ years, so it felt like well past time to revisit it.

The developers have tried to create a world inspired by classics like Stalker, The Road, and La Jetée.

Playmobil Canada is celebrating 50 years, and what better way to celebrate than collaborating with the worlds most recognizable fast food chain to release toys in happy meals. That’s right, Playmobil animals are now available at McDonalds Canada! Wiltopia has quickly become my son Lincoln’s favourite Playmobil theme, so when we stopped for after soccer ice cream at our local McDonald’s, we were thrilled to see these available!

is not another iterative sequel, but a detailed overhaul of the foundation which made the original game so relentlessly bleak and mechanically challenging. As a distressing choice-driven adventure game masquerading as a city-builder/survival experience, 11 Bit Studios’ tumbled genre expectations on release, tasking players with the construction, maintenance, and expansion of an increasingly complicated urban stronghold in the dead of a volcanic winter., for better and possibly for worse, amplifies the original’s thesis while discarding a few vestigial aspects; frankly, this is the epitome of a divisive sequel.

City builders and survival games can be difficult genres to ease yourself into. They can seem especially daunting when they’re a sequel to a predecessor built on as complex foundations as Frostpunk was. It's pleasantly surprising, then, that Frostpunk 2 feels so welcoming to new players. As someone not fully versed in the two genres it blends so delicately, and with just a handful of hours in the original Frostpunk, I loved my time with its prettier, and thoroughly political sequel. Largely thanks to the neverending series of moral conundrums thrown my way, I had a lot of fun in New London, even if all of the citizens I tried to save experienced the complete opposite.

One of the core aspects of is its settlement building system, which allows the Sole Survivor to clear neglected areas and turning them into thriving small towns. As well as needing food, water, and power, these settlements can be upgraded with defenses and eventually traders. While any settler can be assigned to a trading stall, there are several unique NPCs dotted around the commonwealth that, as well as enhancing the stock, are pretty cool to have around.

However, to balance things out, the development points you need to unlock these enhancements are given out very sparingly. To make matters even more stressful, there’s no way to undo a choice you make, so any point spent in error is locked in until you start a new game. There’s none that can make your game harder, but if you pick one that offers no benefit to your current settlement or goals, it might as well be a negative in terms of the opportunity cost. For the best experience, here are the developments you should invest in first.

Building your population in Manor Lords is one thing, but making sure they want to stick around and continue to grow is the real challenge. You could have the ideal design for a village, or the perfect tactical mind for conquering the entire map, but if your approval rating is too low, you won't survive your first winter.

Splotter Spellen Games have stayed with me since I started gaming and before I started logging plays in 2017. My tastes have dramatically changed over the years, but owning and playing Splotters hasn’t stopped. In fact, I rarely pre-order games (Kickstarters included) and I pre-ordered 2023’s release. I think all their games have unique ideas, themes, and a lot of strategies through fairly condensed rules. They aren’t games that have wide appeal, as their designs are built under a philosophy: “If you can’t lose the game on turn one, what is the point of having a turn one?” Of their 15 released games, only seven of them received multiple print runs or wider releases. It would have been six, but they happened to release a game last year. Those seven are all good, but allow me to rank them based on my taste and preferences.

We're closing in on a year since the release of Pokemon Sleep. A game/lifestyle app The Pokemon Company had been radio silent on for so long after its announcement that some of us were convinced it had all been a dream. Typically, playing city-based or civilization-building games is a relaxing experience for me. There’s an inherent satisfaction in something I created in Cities: Skylines 2 or Mini Motorways running efficiently based on my actions. I’m content with spending dozens of hours crafting a functioning world, and only occasionally having my skills tested in a high-intensity situation. Frostpunk 2 from 11 bit Studios is a city-builder where those feelings are often reversed. Most of my time playing its beta was extremely stressful, as I constantly had to make difficult decisions in order to preserve a society that established itself in a frosty postapocalypse.

During the lifespan of the Nintendo DS, DSi, and 3DS which all released at different times they released many different limited addition versions of the handheld console. Folks seem pretty down on Dungeons & Dragons lately, and not for no reason. The company that owns it, Hasbro, continues to stick its foot in it — first with the whole OGL fiasco this time last year, and most recently with some conflicting comments from the company’s CEO regarding its stance on AI. But the gang at Worlds Beyond Number, the wildly popular Patreon-funded actual-play podcast, is still all-in on the seminal role-playing game. In fact, their most recent behind-the-scenes episode is serving to remind me why 5th edition D&D remains so popular — both with at-home players and with performers at Dimension 20, Critical Role, and elsewhere.

In 2015, Tony wrote a Top 10 list about the ten required expansions. Well, it’s been nearly a decade and board gaming has only grown exponentially since then. I wanted to take the time to go through all of the expansions that have been released in the last (nearly) ten years to discuss what expansions feel required for their base game these days.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater won't change the story or fundamental game design of the original Konami game.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 resists you at every turn. Seemingly every mechanic in this sprawling RPG — from combat to exploration to the pawns who resolutely follow you around — is complex in a way that eludes quick explanation. Even the save system doesn’t make sense.

Being a Vanillaware title, the recently released (and excellent) strategy RPG Unicorn Overlord bears immediate resemblance to the Japanese developer's previous outings, like Muramasa: Rebirth, Dragon's Crown, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. This is because longtime artist and studio co-founder Shigatake insists on depicting food as hyper-realistically as possible and defying the laws of physics when it comes to depicting the female form.

With lovely strategy RPG Unicorn Overlord being a Vanillaware title, it obviously has a cute little minigame where you scarf down illegally delicious-looking food. It turns out the main artist behind these entreating entrees is also responsible for the way the game upholds another Vanillaware quirk: curiously jiggly women.
