Aesthetic, gameplay design, character interactions and story all appear at least vaguely reminiscent to the storied franchise — but what's present in this game is much more than just an imitation. Through its own complex and engrossing systems, is a legitimate competitor in a space that's been dominated by one entity (at least in the mainstream) for far too long.

Hello and happy new year! Once again, team Engadget has set up shop in Las Vegas for CES, living out of suitcases so that we can scour the massive show floor and occasionally injure ourselves in the process. For CES 2024, we expected to see AI everywhere, and we were not disappointed.

We've already published our staff-wide list of the best games of 2023, but every editor had a few games they wish could have received some praise. Valve has unveiled its annual ‘Best of 2023' list on Steam, revealing which titles dominated sales on PC. The titles haven't been numerically ranked, but have been grouped into tiers — Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze — based on data collected from January 1 through December 15, 2023. The Top 12 category is populated by both free-to-play multiplayer games and the biggest launches, with the award-winning Baldur's Gate 3, Starfield, Cyberpunk 2077, and Hogwarts Legacy emerging as the best-selling titles. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which was disliked by both fans and critics alike, also made it to higher echelons, thanks to a dedicated fanbase wanting to experience its multiplayer segment.

Valve has released their annual Best of Steam 2023, a showcase of what was played most and made the most money broken down into roughly grouped tiers: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. In a year of absolutely great games, some of these chart-toppers aren't surprises, but dang I'd never have guessed that Half-Life, the 1998 classic, would make the top tier of the most-played Steam Deck games by daily active players.

It's interesting every year as older games or indie obscurities do better than you expect.

Video game analyst group Circana has released its November 2023 U.S. Video Game Market Highlights report and in it, the company reveals that, unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III was the best-selling game of the month. It launched on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on November 10 and is already the second best-selling game of 2023, behind Hogwarts Legacy.

In some great news for fans, Krafton's most popular game, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) has won a prestigious title in the country during the Google Play's Best of 2023 Awards. While the game has suffered a lot due to a ban over security concerns, the game has finally climbed to the top position in the gaming industry and proved to be the best in the race in India. Google Play best of 2023 awards: Google Play, the official app marketplace for Android smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets, has announced its annual awards for the best apps and games. The entire list has been divided into several categories as well as Users' Choice awards. These awards are listed for the US, but they are also curated locally for your country. For India, the best app of 2023 is Level SuperMind, the meditation app by YouTuber and influencer Ranveer Allahbadia, whereas the Users' Choice winner is THAP: Your Happiness Gym, a self-care app for mental health. Larian have released a new Baldur's Gate 3 update, Patch 4, which applies 1000 fixes and changes to the indecently expansive fantasy RPG - far too many to list on Steam. The most significant additions are accessibility settings for colour-blind people, the ability to visually customise hirelings upon recruitment, and the ability to clean up party members using sponges and soap, rather than lobbing bottles of water at them. No more rocking up to cutscenes looking like Sweeney Todd on his lunchbreak! Well, unless that's your vibe.

In a year with a massive roster of truly epic games to play, I still haven’t forgotten one of my favorites, Remnant 2 – a soulslike looter shooter with procedurally generated levels that I’ve easily put more than 100 hours into at this point. And as luck would have it, there’s more of that sweet multiversal goodness on the way with The Awakened King, a DLC that will add a sizable chunk of fresh content and plenty of reasons to grab some friends and jump back into the fray. In a hands-off demo of the expansion, I saw some tasty items, weapons, enemies, and, of course, bosses, and I already can’t wait to revisit one of my most beloved games of 2023.

iPhones have long been known as the best in the business. While Apple's smartphones generally cost a fortune, they offer the best technology the world has to offer, without any compromises. It is this no-holds-barred approach that has helped Apple trump everyone in a smartphone market that is exceedingly getting crowded with amazing options for every use case and budget. However, only a handful of them can hold a candle to the iPhone, especially when it comes to performance and a developed ecosystem. Samsung has been attempting to create its very own ecosystem and has taken positive steps towards it with its smartphones, earbuds, smartwatches and laptops, but it is far from being a worthy rival to Apple. And from that high perch, the iPhone 15 Plus started its journey in our hands and expectations were high. Did it ace the test?

Star Trek and strategy games seem like they should fit like a snug, spandex spacesuit. While, in the past, game studios have attempted to apply the Star Trek brand to sexier game genres like first-person shooters or flight combat simulators, this often felt like a sweaty attempt to make Trek fit into a non-fan’s definition of “cool.” Thankfully, Trek’s fortunes seem to be changing, as for the second time this year, it’s been applied to a game that both fits the brand and can stand up next to other titles in its genre. Developed by Nimble Giant Entertainment (the 2016 Masters of Orion remake) and published by Paradox Interactive (Crusader Kings, Stellaris), Star Trek: Infinite is a 4X grand strategy game that shares a lot of qualities with a good Star Trek episode: It’s cerebral, accessible, occasionally a little clumsy, and overall a good time.
