Yesterday was a sad day for 3DS and Wii U players as the online services went down for both of them. This is something that sadly happens with each console as they get older and age, especially with Nintendo – it just seems to always happen way too soon. With the Nintendo Switch already almost a decade old, we knew we’d watch the other consoles fall before a new one could go live, hopefully in 2025.

It's truly the end of an era for Nintendo fans, as online services for 3DS and Wii U have finally shut down. With it, we say goodbye to online multiplayer for the likes of Splatoon, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Pokemon X and Y, and Xenoblade Chronicles X, with everything shutting off for good at 5pm PT/8pm ET yesterday (or 1am GMT this morning for UK folks). 

Buckshot Roulette is simple, and simply unsettling. Sat across the table from a mysterious opponent clad in a deeply unnerving toothy mask, you pick up a shotgun loaded with shells. Then, you decide whether to point the gun at your opponent or yourself, and pull the trigger. Some of the shells are live, and others are blanks. Guess correctly, and you get to go again.

Windows handhelds like the ROG Ally have specs that put the Steam Deck to shame, but are let down by Windows being terrible as a handheld operating system. So, what if you could have the best of both worlds?

The deck-fixing roguelikelike poker of Balatro is chuffing excellent, no doubt, but my main criticism has been that the higher difficulty modes are just a bit boring. Having beat them myself, I didn't find them a fun or interesting challenge as much as an annoying one that required too much to go right. I'm glad to hear that they're being tweaked in an upcoming patch, which you can now test in a public beta on Steam, and even the lowest difficulty setting will be tweaked. Other changes include improved (hopefully) Steam Deck performance, balance tweaks, and better Joker-related Tags.

Remember when Redbox or Blockbuster would let you rent some of the newest titles for just a few bucks a day? A new trend has emerged to fill the void left behind by the loss of rental services. Many public libraries have started to collect video games, and it doesn't cost a cent to borrow them.

Roblox allows its players to create and monetise their own creations within its ecosystem. Across the entire breadth of Roblox game makers, a lot of money is made. At the individual level, however, the vast majority of creators making work within Roblox never earn enough to cash out their earnings - and some of those creators are children. This has long led to allegations that Roblox is exploiting child labour, generating huge profits for Roblox Studio and its shareholders in the process.

Goodbye, App Store Suika Game clones. The real thing has finally arrived on iOS for players outside of Japan. Suika Game, the watermelon puzzle game that went viral on Nintendo Switch last year, is available to download for $2.99 on Apple’s App Store, making it playable on iPhone and iPad. The title for the official version is “Suika Game-Aladdin X” and it comes from XGIMI Limited.

RPS was on holiday yesterday, which is fortuitous timing because it was April 1st and it meant we missed all the "jokes" (lies) the games industry likes to spread on that day each year.

It's a free (free!) little game originally made for 2022's 32bit jam that takes about 20 minutes to play through, wherein you play a child rabbit who has arrived at a holiday cabin with her family. You're the first to head inside and, oop, the door locks behind you. Classic twist. A further twist is that, while Rental is entirely free to download and play, you can buy a supporter zine as DLC to kick some funds to the devs. Noice.

I seriously wanted the headline to be, "Own every Fallout game for less than $23" -- but that's technically a lie and we don't do clickbait here at IGN, right? In reality, you're missing out on some obscure titles (sorry) like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel on the PS2, but this is the best we've got and it's still pretty damn good for what you're getting.

But one of my favorite games of 2024 isn’t available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or even Nintendo Switch. It’s Mars After Midnight, a game from Papers, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn developer Lucas Pope. The only place you can play it? On the Playdate, Panic’s quirky little 1-bit handheld with a crank.

Overwatch 2’s next damage hero Venture is tunnelling into the free-to-play shooter a little early - for a while anyway. Before the new drillin’ DPS makes their official arrival next month, they’ll be available to take for a spin from tomorrow through the weekend.

Troubled city building game Cities: Skylines 2 is getting a little less troubled, as new patch 1.1.0f1 adds various performance and bug fixes alongside the main event: much requested mod support and tools in the form a nifty editor. We got a first look at the new editor tools last October, which looks to simplify the process by combining what was previously several different separate editors into a single application. It was later available only to some closed beta testers, but is now released for everyone. Emphasis on everyone, actually, since the tool looks refreshingly approachable, even for those with basically no modding experience.

Although has many mechanics that make it uniquely difficult compared to other open-world RPGs, the obscure and deadly Dragonsplague is possibly the game's most punishing mechanic. Released 12 years after the original, the sequel features an all-new map and greatly expanded systems, but with a new, wider audience, some of the game's new or returning mechanics have proven to be somewhat controversial.

A free playable demo of upcoming action-adventure game Stellar Blade will be made available to download on March 29 for PlayStation 5 owners, ahead of the game’s full release on April 26.

A day before Stardew Valley’s 1.6 update release date, developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone posted a line from the update’s patch notes on X (formerly Twitter): “You can now drink mayonnaise.” The Stardew Valley community was shook. It’s just… why? Once the update launched on March 19, the answer became clear: It’s actually a pretty good early game item thanks to Stardew Valley’s new Meadowlands Farm, which lets you start your farm with two chickens.

There’s nothing quite like a good ol’ horror game to get the blood pumping. Epic Games is launching a set of tools for Unreal Editor for Fortnite that’ll let players create their own Lego Fortnite islands. Epic and Lego announced the tools during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.

The Steam version of Palworld now features two achievements related to the upcoming raid boss, but they are impossible for players to unlock at the time of this writing. Yes, there is good news coming your way as the app is expected to include the “hum to search” feature. This feature enables users to find music just by humming the song. This feature has already been made available to the YouTube app since October 2023 and the Google search. With the release of iOS 17.4, Apple introduced several exciting updates, including new emojis, changes to the App Store in the European Union, and transcripts for Apple Podcasts. Outcast: A New Beginning is the sequel to one of the very first open-world games ever made, simply called Outcast, but it's also taking cues from games that have come out in that two-decade gap by letting players explore an entire alien world "without any restrictions."

I’m not personally familiar with Nexon’s 2010 MMO Vindictus, but its upcoming action-RPG spin-off Vindictus: Defying Fate is looking like a fairly flashy mix of Celtic mythology, dodge-and-slash swordplay and some sharp visuals. Heads up, Helldivers – literally. Seemingly out of nowhere, there've been sightings of flying terminids out in the wild, which the game's director – and the Ministry of Truth – insist are "filthy lies" and "propaganda from bug sympathizers." Interested players can already start farming Arlecchino’s materials in if a new Version 4.6 leak is to be believed. The Fatui Harbinger known as the Knave is a long-awaited character that first debuted as an NPC in the Fontaine storyline. Arlecchino’s presence in the game has long been teased and, even before the release of the Nation of Hydro, there were a few alleged leaks about. Now, however, Arlecchino’s release in has been officially confirmed by HoYoverse and it is set for Version 4.6, the next major patch in the live-service RPG.

Dragon's Dogma 2 will let you permanently kill off NPCs, unlike the first game which had them respawn and recover from death after a week of in-game time.

Ahead of launching Dragon's Dogma 2 later this month, Capcom have released its character creator for free as a separate standalone doodad. You can create your character and your main Pawn (NPC sidekick) and save them to use in the full game. Or, if you're like me and cannot resist playing for hours in a character creator, you can enjoy fiddling with its many sliders and marvelling at the breadth of options like 334 different colours for its four eye colour settings and the ability to remove individual teeth. I made my kitten as my pal, because I guess that's what I do now.

Dune: Awakening will pair survival and crafting mechanics with the social interaction of a massively multiplayer online game, letting players fulfill the hellish fantasy of surviving life on Arrakis. Helldivers 2 has plenty of weapons and firepower at your disposal to help spread democracy, but just like with every online game these days, players have been attempting to create meta builds and streamline their loadouts to ensure they're doing as much damage as possible. It's not really in the spirit of the game, especially if you're chastising other players for using weapons that may not be optimal, but there's every chance the weapons you're not using are better than they appear on paper.

Legendary first-person shooter Doom has once again proven it can be played in the most unexpected places.

The combined Lego and Fortnite universe is getting bigger — three times bigger, as of today. Lego Group and Epic Games announced two new Lego games, known as islands, will be coming to Fortnite. The first is a multiplayer problem-solving game with a pirate theme called Lego Raft Survival, and the second is a 3D platformer called Lego Obby Fun. Both games will be available to visit inside the Fortnite client starting Tuesday.

Baldur's Gate 3 has plenty of difficult sections that players will just about crawl through, but you'll struggle to find one as universally dreaded as the Gauntlet of Shar. Helldivers 2 has had one heck of a time since it was released on Feb. 8, and it’s easy to see why: The third-person shooter is both hilarious and explosively fun. It’s also filled with little moments that add up to one special experience. One example of Helldivers 2’s attention to detail is in its emotes. The Japanese server of the action RPG is ending its services today, February 20, 2024. The news of World Flipper EOS was dropped a few months ago, with the last chapter released in November 2023. The global version is going to be shut down soon, too.
