Aesthetic, gameplay design, character interactions and story all appear at least vaguely reminiscent to the storied franchise — but what's present in this game is much more than just an imitation. Through its own complex and engrossing systems, is a legitimate competitor in a space that's been dominated by one entity (at least in the mainstream) for far too long.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty seriously impressed me with its RPG reactivity⁠—the written-in bits that show CD Projekt Red anticipated and accounted for players' actions. The goofy rocket guy easter egg was certainly fun, but I'm thinking more in terms of life path-exclusive dialogue or main game events that get a nod in Phantom Liberty.

I've never been a huge fan of New Game+ modes in FromSoftware games. While it's fun to rip through progressively harder versions of the game, the balance eventually starts to get wonky, your chosen stat progression means less, and you're left wondering whether it would've been more fun to just load up a new save and enjoy the more intentional difficulty curve of a first playthrough.

Patience. Starfield is a huge game set in a universe of newly inhabited planets, and it combines interstellar travel with furious gunplay, alien exploration, spaceship management, character customization and interpersonal strife, and it takes a moment for all of these layers to merge into a coherent experience. But, give Starfield time, approach its systems with grace, and you’ll be rewarded with a big, generic sci-fi RPG.

An essential PSA is spreading through the Armored Core 6 community, and it's even more important than the one about doing your dang training missions. The short version is that you owe it to yourself to play Armored Core 6 New Game+ and even NG++ if you really want to see the whole story. 

Whether you're a fan of amassing giant hordes of goblins, arranging your battle lines of World War 2 tanks just so, or exploring the far reaches of space, there's a strategy game for you. And for the next week, a bunch of them are on sale during the Steam Strategy Fest, which ends on September 4. 

We think of video game sequels as something that can outdo the original in most ways, be more of the same, or even hit fans with the heavy hammer of disappointment. That, however, ignores the rare but very real case of sequels that don’t necessarily suck but that will baffle fans with their nigh-inexplicable new design choices. We shouldn’t forget this class of sequel, it does at least a great job of providing fun to anyone learning about just how absolutely bizarre these games can get.

Good news, anime fans. You can now watch some of Crunchyroll’s biggest and best shows – free of charge. The anime streaming service has announced that its free ad-supported tier now includes Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, Vinland Saga, and more. 

A closed network test for Tekken 8 was held in July, with an initial run that was exclusively available to Playstation 5 owners followed by a broader test that included players on Steam. Letting PC gamers near Tekken 8 meant that someone fired up Cheat Engine because of course they did, at which point they managed to find a partial roster in the game's files that includes six previously unannounced characters.

You’ll have a hard time finding a movie sequel that doesn’t pale in comparison to the original. Sometimes, it’s just hard to come up with a story that beats the one we all already love. Games don’t have that problem as making a better game usually requires the developers to just read player feedback and improve upon the original’s gameplay shortcomings. That’s, however, not the case in every single video game sequel. There’s a surprisingly high number of once-promising sequels that fumble hilariously in places where the original triumphed.
