Ubisoft recently premiered a new story trailer for Star Wars Outlaws, offering another look at Massive Entertainment’s upcoming open world action-adventure title, and confirming that it’ll be releasing this August. Alongside that, the company has also released a developer breakdown of the trailer, in which narrative director Navid Khavari sheds new light on some of the game’s key characters, the many underworld syndicates protagonist Kay Vess will be crossing paths with, and more.

Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft's expansive open-world game set in the galaxy far, far away, was briefly known to be eyeing a ‘late 2024' release window, as per a recent Disney Parks blog. That has since been corrected to reflect a general timespan this year, with the publisher confirming to Kotaku that the timing was incorrectly displayed. First revealed during an Xbox Showcase last year, the title is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi movies, and introduces Kay Vess, a space scoundrel with a bounty on her head after botching up a job. Joining her on the crusade is the adorable axolotl-like alien Nix, performing certain actions at your command — akin to the BD-1 droid from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

A report stemming from a Disney Parks blog post earlier today suggested that the upcoming Ubisoft game would be coming out in late 2024. However, Ubisoft has since clarified the post in a statement.

Update: Earlier today, a Disney Parks blog pointed to Star Wars Outlaws releasing in late 2024, but the term «late» has now been removed from the post so that is now reads just 2024. Ubisoft also confirmed to Kotaku that, «the timing was incorrect and has since been amended.» So, Star Wars Outlaws' release window has moved from late 2024 back to some general time this year.

For example, the Imperial Agent storyline from BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic works so well precisely because it's more concerned with intergalactic politics and spy thriller nonsense over mystical force mumbo-jumbo.

Star Wars Outlaws is one of the most anticipated upcoming games for fans of the Star Wars franchise, and there’s a lot to look forward to about the scoundrel fantasy. 

When it comes to a story, regardless of the media it’s in, you must have a main character that the audience can connect to in various ways. They don’t necessarily have to be a good/bad person. They just need to showcase enough for people to be invested in them. Ubisoft has had many unique protagonists over the years, and the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws will be no different. Within this original title set within the original movie trilogy, we’ll meet Kay Vess, an outlaw who is quite different from other leads we’ve met in this galaxy. As Ubisoft revealed, that was the point from the start.

2023 isn’t done yet; even if it were almost done, there has been plenty to talk about within the gaming community. For example, there have been numerous big-time releases alongside big-time announcements about what’s coming next year. One title that everyone has been enjoying talking about is Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft’s unique title aims to help gamers redefine what it means to live in the galaxy far, far away, and they’re excited to take part in it. The only people more excited are the dev team at Ubisoft, as they’ve been working hard to make the game feel special.

Despite a big focus on player choice, Star Wars Outlaws won't be offering multiple endings.

In a recent interview, developers at Massive outlined the size and scope of Star Wars Outlaws stating that the title is «not a 200 or 300-hour epic unfinishable RPG.» 

While Ubisoft’s last few releases have been more miss than hit, the future is slightly better, thanks to titles like Star Wars Outlaws. Developed by Ubisoft Massive of The Division fame, it’s an open-world third-person shooter starring Kay Vess, who pursues the scoundrel lifestyle across numerous planets.

Since the last three Assassin's Creed games are gigantic RPGs with equally as expansive maps, there's understandable anxiety when Ubisoft announces a new RPG--will it be an unfathomable time sink of hundreds of hours? With Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft says no.

Ubisoft has addressed some worries about Star Wars Outlaws’ playtime.

Star Wars Outlaws creative director Julian Gerighty and narrative director Navid Khavari have revealed that the game won’t be a 200-300 hour game. Speaking with IGN during San Diego Comic-Con, the duo spoke about what it means for a game to be “too big”.
