Game developers have a problem with this year’s Game Awards.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), once held every summer as the games industry’s biggest convention, is officially dead, the Entertainment Software Association confirmed.

Ding, dong, E3 is dead. The Electronic Entertainment Expo has officially been brought to a close by the Entertainment Software Association that organised the show, it has been confirmed.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (better known as E3) is canceled indefinitely. “After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye,” event organizer the Entertainment Software Association wrote on its website. “Thanks for the memories. GGWP.”

It's official: E3 is dead. After several failed attempts to bring the industry event back, organisers admit that it's ending for good, making 2019 the last time E3 was held in person.

Easily one of the most surprising announcements from this year’s The Game Awards was Light No Fire, a brand-new survival adventure game by No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games.

Following scrutiny from developers, The Game Awards founder and host Geoff Keighley has said he agrees the allotted speech time for each winner was too short this year.

Hideo Kojima showed up at this year's Game Awards to reveal OD, a new Xbox project in collaboration with Get Out director Jordan Peele. The tagline, "for the players and the screamers", and Peele's involvement points to it being horror-related, but there wasn't much else to go off of aside from a few eerie headshots of actors who will star in the game. However, fans have dug deeper and found some classic cryptic Kojima easter eggs that they think are teasing a new Silent Hill.

The Game Awards has faced a slew of criticism about its format as developers were urged off stage. Its creator, director and figurehead Geoff Keighley responded and recognized the widespread frustration the next day on social media. 

As promised by host Geoff Keighley ahead of the event, The Game Awards 2023 featured a lot of new game announcements (61, to be exact), with Kojima's OD topping press coverage out of all the game showed, according to an analysis by FanCensus.

The Game Awards was once again a pretty terrific celebration of games last night, though the same can't really be said about the people that make them. More than any other year, organizer and host Geoff Keighley has come under fire for rushing award winners through their acceptance speeches, but he claims that "no one was actually cut off" during the show.

Baldur's Gate III took home the top honour at The Game Awards 2023, held early Friday in Los Angeles, besting its lead competitor Alan Wake II. The Dungeons & Dragons-based sprawling RPG, which was strongly revered by both fans and critics alike, bagged six trophies, including Best Community Support and Best Performance. The latter was collected by Neil Newbon, who played Astarion, the silver-haired vampire spawn, holding our attention with his melodramatic persona and the occasional high-pitched screeches. Meanwhile, Remedy's Alan Wake 2 won four awards across some of the most important categories, with co-directors Sam Lake and Kyle Rowley emerging as the best game directors of the year, alongside a writing/ narrative nod.

The final chapter of horrifying cooperative FPS GTFO is out now, sending it off with a scream as the developers look forward to their newly announced next game. The update, Rundown 8.0 Duality includes new expeditions, new awful beings to murder you, and new weapons to attempt to stop them. It looks awful in a lovely way. Maybe I'll finally pluck up the courage to give GTFO a proper go, especially as a free trial weekend is running on Steam and the game's discounted too. I don't want to encourage more publishers to create irrelevant, self-indulgent trailers for Geoff Keighley's Advertganza, but I'll cut Sega a break for their one. Sure, the first 52 seconds are some live-action skit, but the following 41 seconds announce no less than five games. Sega are returning to their glory days once again, with new games coming based on Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets Of Rage, Golden Axe, Shinobi, "and more." Good news if you own God of War: Ragnarok; you’re getting new content to play whether you like it or not. During the 2023 Game Awards show, a new DLC pack called Valhalla was announced, and it comes with the hefty price tag of “free.”

After the deadly (and delightful) card game of Inscryption, creator Daniel Mullins is returning to his happy land of little horses. Today he announced Pony Island 2: Panda Circus, a new genre-shifting curio described as "a phantasmagorical voyage through time, myth, divinity, and video games." I like that this description is likely wholly earnest and accurate. This news came during the pre-show for Geoff Keighley's Shopping Hour and if a game like this is relegated to the pre-show, I can only assume the main event will include Half-Life 3, Elden Ring 2, and Deus Ex 5.

This year, the show is dropping the “World Premiere” branding for the new trailers and footage shown, but Geoff Keighley actually promises more reveals than usual.

The Game Awards is back for its 2023 edition, signalling that time of the year when the industry and fans gather together to celebrate the best in video games. Marking the 10th iteration of the Geoff Keighley-hosted show, the annual event is held in high regard by developers worldwide, who will be competing in 31 categories that acknowledge games across genres. As usual, the ceremony will be spruced up by big announcements and trailers for upcoming titles, backed by a dedicated musical orchestra conducted by returning composer Lorne Balfe. There haven't been as many leaks this year, so anticipation is high as gamers keep their fingers crossed hoping for the biggest reveals.

During The Game Awards last year, you may recall that Valve decided to give some viewers an early Christmas present by dishing out a number of Steam Decks for completely free. Not only that, but the company gave away a Steam Deck for every minute The Game Awards ran, even if the timing of the show went over the usual three and a half hours that Geoff Keighley reserves for the occasion. Valve is doing the same this year, but with one significant catch.
