E3 officially dead after more than two decades

Skul: The Hero Slayer has sold 2 million copies since release, putting the sidescrolling action roguelike in that top tier of multi-million-selling games. Skul's Dead Cells-esque and Hollow Knight-like action never had a huge single spike in popularity, but has steadily grown in sales since its January 2021 release alongside pretty regular large additions and patches.

Apple may have crossed the $3 trillion valuation mark this year, making it the most valuable company in the world, but that does not mean the California-based firm had the most successful run in 2023 because other technology giants outperformed it by quite a fair margin. In fact, according to the latest report, Apple suffered its longest revenue slide in 22 years, with several challenges expected to make attempts at its growth in 2024.

The Day Before will be shutting down in January, less than two months after its disastrous launch.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, is officially dead. A statement on the official website simply reads: «After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye. Thanks for the memories.»

The writing has been on the wall for what was once the biggest date on the gaming calendar for a while, but today it was officially announced by the Entertainment Software Association via the Washington Post that “after more than two decades of hosting an event that has served as a central showcase for the U.S. and global video game industry,” E3 is dead. Permanently. No extra lives.

Its closure was only a matter of time, slyly signalled in March, when the 2023 edition got cancelled due to a lack of interest from several publishers including the big three — PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo — all of which pulled out. Add to that pandemic-era disruption which caused global lockdowns, competitors such as Summer Game Fest, and the general audience preferring to catch up on game reveals from the comfort of their homes, eventually leading to its demise.
