A Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 player created an incredible mockup of a long-requested game feature, the gun camo challenge tracker. The mockup, which was shared online, was so well-designed that it fooled many into thinking that it was real.
Released in November 2023, Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has drawn flak from both critics and regular gamers alike for its many perceived shortcomings. The shooter's campaign, in particular, was deemed by many to be shallow and rushed, standing in stark contrast to the single player components of the first two releases in the Modern Warfare reboot series that were well-received. While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer offering fared better, it is still nowhere near being perfect, and seemingly frustrated players have now resorted to creating mockups to provide a glimpse of what a better game would look like.
Posting on the subreddit for the Call of Duty series' popular Zombies mode, a user named ygorhpr showed an altered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 screenshot that had a long-requested feature, a tracker for the shooter's many gun camouflage challenges, baked into the game's pause menu. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 players can view the progress of their camo challenges, but they have to leave any ongoing matches and go back to the main menu to do this. These kinds of small yet noticeable issues are not game-breaking by any means, but they have not done any favors for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which is now the lowest-rated game in the entire Call of Duty series.
Community members were impressed by ygorhpr's mockup of a gun camo challenge tracker, with many admitting that they thought the altered screenshot was real. The Reddit account of Sledgehammer Games was even tagged in the post, but some users claimed that such a feature would never be added to the game as its absence acted as a delaying tool that lengthened player retention. To the developer's credit, Sledgehammer Games has listened to its audience in the past, so a gun camo tracker being implemented in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 would not be completely out of the question.
Should Sledgehammer Games ever decide to add a tracker, however, it could arrive much later down the road as the studio likely has bigger issues to worry about. Among these could be the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies bug that is teleporting players to death.
