has improved upon the traversal mechanics in the previous games with customization options to allow for more traditional physics-based web-swinging and new features such as web wings, which haven't been part of an open-world game before. Developer Insomniac Games' previous games were praised for their web-swinging mechanics, but with improved loading and rendering speeds available through the PlayStation 5's hardware, its sequel has been able to build upon this for even more variety.
The new web wings mechanic is triggered when in the air by simply pressing the triangle button on the PS5's DualSense controller. From here, players can glide around the city rather than using their webs. They can also receive speed boosts by flying into the white wispy lines around the city that reveal holographic rings, deemed «wind tunnels.» The city can be explored almost entirely by relying on web wings, however, this is only marginally faster than traversing entirely by using web-swinging.
Combining web wings with web-swinging is faster than sticking with one method.
As shared by Redditor rrdaquis33, there are a series of additional, hidden wind tunnels across New York City. These can be found in tighter spaces, such as narrow gaps between buildings, under low bridges and tunnels, or in the stairways next to subway stations.
The way these lower wind tunnels work is similar to how players can web-zip through a fire escape while swinging, but the web wings already need to be activated to achieve this boost. Navigating these more narrow spots at the high speeds reached with the web wings can add another level of challenge to this method of traversal. However, it can be extremely satisfying if the maneuver is successful.

One of the reasons most players likely won't find the hidden wind tunnels upon their initial playthrough is that web wings traversal is more typically high-flying in its nature. For example, the wings are more useful in scenarios where there aren't many surrounding buildings to attach webs to. This can happen when crossing the East River to get to Brooklyn or Queens or trying to quickly get to a point across the map (without using 's incredibly quick Fast Travel) from the top of one of the city's tallest skyscrapers.
Considering the perceived speed that comes with using the web wings and the tighter turns that often need to be made when navigating the city streets, it's likely players will use traditional swinging for more control when closer to the ground. For those who do want to try exploring 's map, however, these lower wind tunnels can be extremely useful for getting the boost needed to gain height and speed.
