Spider-Man 2's director, Bryan Intihar, has acknowledged that Sandman's inclusion in the sequel is a bit of a plothole thanks to a collectible that could be found in the first game.
Despite being packed full of surprising moments, one of the biggest surprises in Spider-Man 2 can actually be found in the first five minutes of the game - the boss battle against Sandman. Not only is it a shock that Insomniac managed to keep Sandman's inclusion hidden up until launch, but it's a little bit confusing for anyone who took the time to collect all of Peter Parker's backpacks in 2018's Spider-Man.
Peter Parker's backpacks sadly don't make a return in Spider-Man 2, as they've been replaced with Spider-Bots that can be found across New York City and eventually lead to a Spider-Verse cameo.
In the first Spider-Man, Peter Parker's backpacks offered a nice way of showing how much this version of the wall-crawler has already been through, and was mostly used to make little jokes and references to villains and characters that didn't show up in the story. One of those backpacks included a vial of sand that was implied to contain Flint Marko, as Peter noted that he wasn't sure if opening it would release Sandman.
Although it's more likely that the vial of sand was just a little in-joke to reference Sandman being in the universe, some fans took the vial seriously and assumed that it might lead to something in the future. That's not really what ended up happening, as Sandman just kind of appears out of nowhere in Spider-Man 2 without any kind of reference to the vial of sand in the first game. Some fans have been pointing out that this is a bit of a plot hole, which is something that Insomniac Games seems to have just accepted.
During a spoilercast with IGN, Bryan Intihar discusses Sandman's inclusion in the game, noting that the team at one point considered making a symbiote version of the character. Intihar is then asked about the vial of sand easter egg in the first game and questioned if there's an explanation for it or if he just managed to escape.
In response, Intihar laughed and said that "he just got out", noting that the team decided that time had just passed and Flint Marko was back, acknowledging that it's a bit of a plot hole between the first and second game. Intihar continues to talk about some of the characters referenced in the first game that then appear in the second, such as Mysterio, revealing that Insomniac keeps track of all the mentions and references, but doesn't always feel the need to explain everything.
