Miles plays an enormous role in ; however, he is, throughout large sections of the game, overshadowed by Peter Parker and can come off feeling like a secondary character rather than a joint protagonist of equal importance. Though Peter is the original Spider-Man and, therefore, has decades of fan recognition, Miles Morales has, in recent years, become just as popular and widely beloved as his friend and mentor, both in the comics, as well as the film and video game adaptions. Although Miles doesn't solely possess the spotlight in the latest installment of Insomniacs' games, he does go through a lot.

Introduced to the franchise in 2011, Miles Morales in Insomniac Games' video game canon follows in the steps of Peter Parker, getting bitten by a radioactive spider which granted him superhuman abilities and spider-like physiology. Peter takes it upon himself to tutor Miles, and throughout the Insomniac series of games, the pair of Spider-Men become incredibly close friends, a relationship that is, at times, pushed to its limits during. Despite this, Miles helps Peter in his darkest moments and ultimately rescues him from certain oblivion. Though the unparalleled threat of the Symbiote, Venom, makes every character more relatable in , Miles is always a kind, compassionate, and lovable figure.

At the very beginning of, Miles and Peter deliver a recap of the previous events in the Insomniac series of games, including a prolonged section on the death of Miles' father, Jefferson Davis. However, his first appearance in the actual events of the game comes during the first boss fight against Sandman, the game's opening set piece. Miles and Peter are a cohesive team and easily take down Sandman, though Peter is very much the boss, ordering and choreographing Miles' every action. Though much of the early game concerns Peter, MJ, and Harry, Miles is intermittently prominent, and joins Peter in helping escort Scorpion and Mister Negative as their transferred out of the Raft, a supermax prison near Ryker's Island.
The transfer is interrupted by Kraven's hunters, and in a cut scene during the chaos, Scorpion gets the better of Miles and manages to escape justice. Miles finds that he has become imbued with an unexplainable electrical power. Soon after, Miles also runs into his father's killer, Mister Negative, and is waylaid by the manifestation of an unexplainable new form to his bioelectrical powers.
