Share of the Week: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – Miles Morales

Tony Todd has revealed that a huge amount of the work he did for was cut from the final game. The horror icon appeared at Fan Expo San Francisco over the past weekend to talk about his role as Venom in the acclaimed superhero sequel and offered an insight into another storyline involving the symbiote and Miles Morales.

Venom being Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s main antagonist was among the bigger reasons the game generated as much excitement in the lead-up to its launch as it did, and with the game now more than a month old, it’s fair to say that the iconic villain lived up expectations. Interestingly, however, it seems only a fraction of the voice recording that voice actor Tony Todd did for Venom made it into the final game.

The spin-off title isn't quite as long as its predecessor, but it still manages to juggle a handful of villains. Insomniac Games' first game in the series,, put players in control of an experienced Peter Parker, thus including a deluge of villains, including the Sinister Six. ' villain slate is comparatively modest, clocking in at a total of five, but this smaller cast works for the benefit of the spin-off's runtime and the constraints of its narrative.

Insomniac had its work cut out for it with Spider-Man 2 . To say expectations were high going into this sequel is an understatement, buffered by both the first game's major success and the bridge between console generations that was Miles Morales. This new Spidey adventure had to take the best elements from those games, mix them with new characters, features, and stories, and produce the kind of game fans will talk about for years. Somehow, they did just that; Spider-Man 2 is, to get the easy pun out of the way early, amazing. 

Peter Parker and Miles Morales face several villains throughout . While most of these villains have complete arcs in the game's campaign or are used to set up future appearances in sequels or potential DLC, there is one villain who appears in the game but doesn't have a clear story arc ahead.

The greatest challenge for any discipline in game development is the ultimate demon: math. More specifically, exponential math. As the upper boundaries of game development have become more polished and detailed, the effort needed to meet higher bars of quality requires more assets, more content, and more resources—all variables that grow exponentially larger when designers try to support features built around player choice.

The release of DLC for could finally resolve a huge missed opportunity from. The second game released in Insomniac's series,, was an outstanding title; however, the base game was short and it lacked any DLC. This was compounded in the most recent game, by the fact that, for the most part, comes across as a Peter Parker-orientated game, with Miles being relegated to the unenviable position of being the game's secondary protagonist — especially during the main story sections concerning Harry Osborn and the game's primary antagonist, the sentient alien Symbiote known as Venom.

Insomniac Games' is the latest in a series of video games that has done a phenomenal job of including a vast range of powerful adversaries for Peter Parker and Miles Morales to face — both universally known enemies and those that are little recognized outside the most dedicated Spider-Man fans. Despite this, there are a significant number of enemies that absolutely must feature in the inevitable sequel to the latest entry, — a few of whom have never made it into a game, but absolutely have the potential to be devastatingly powerful bosses that torment both Peter and Miles as well as New York.

While is one of the biggest releases of the year, it also came with a number of bugs, which a recent update has helped to alleviate — unfortunately, the patch has also removed a hidden exploit that allowed players to free-roam the city as Venom. The first game in the series to feature both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as playable protagonists, also had a major focus on adapting the popular symbiote storyline from the classic comics, including the introduction of iconic Spider-Man villain Venom alongside fellow Marvel antagonists Sandman and Kraven.

Spider-Man 2's director, Bryan Intihar, has explained why the sequel is missing so many costumes from the first game and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, noting that it wasn't as simple as just porting them from one to the other.

Bouncing between a variety of protagonists was a concept first introduced in the original, which occasionally set Peter's story aside to follow the footsteps of Mary Jane Watson or Miles Morales. Neither of these offered gameplay that was quite as dynamic as Peter's, with Mary Jane's segments, in particular, receiving some flak, but improves both of these options while introducing another that falls behind either.
