Geomagnetic storm today: NASA's Parker Solar Probe on September 5 recorded one of the most powerful Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) ever as it flew by the Sun. According to NASA, the CME hurled out interplanetary dust to about 6 million miles, which is one-sixth of the distance between the Sun and Mercury. Astonishingly, the dust floating around in space replenished it almost immediately. Guillermo Stenborg, an astrophysicist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) who led this study said, “These interactions between CMEs and dust were theorized two decades ago, but had not been observed until Parker Solar Probe viewed a CME act like a vacuum cleaner, clearing the dust out of its path.”

According to data from NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), it erupted on the notorious sunspot region AR3429 that recently came into Earth's view. The CME was noted to be in the range of Earth's strike zone and could deliver a glancing blow to our planet sparking a solar storm. But will it hit?

Hello, everyone! We've seen a lot of conversations around Competitive in Overwatch lately, and I'd like to take most of this week's Director's Take to address it. But first, let’s have a quick hero update.

In a rare event that has galvanised skywatchers and sent them scooting for their telescopes and binoculars in order to cacth more than just a glimpse of a new comet that has just appeared. In fact, people all over the world are taking amazing pictures of Comet Nishimura as it travels through space. This comet was sighted for the first time in August, 2023 by a sky-watcher named Hideo Nishimura from Kakegawa City, Japan. He used a regular camera with a special lens to spot it. Finding a comet like this with a regular camera is a big deal because most new comets are discovered with fancy telescopes. This comet is especially important because a strange interaction with a solar storm was spotted.

With the solar maximum approaching in the next few years, the Sun's activity is rising and is expected to rise even more. We have already seen a vast number of solar flares, CMEs, solar storms, and geomagnetic storms this year. Astonishingly, the Sun has already exceeded the predicted number of sunspots that were expected in the solar maximum, according to experts. To monitor the Sun's volatile nature, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) carries a full suite of instruments that help it to observe solar activity.

A rare comet will pass Earth in September and it is one of the rarest cosmic events that can be seen with the naked eye. Viewers who like to capture such events can watch Comet Nishimura pass on the northeastern horizon on September 12. The comet was discovered last month. In a remarkable feat of space exploration, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced the successful completion of the second Earth-bound manuooevre for the Aditya-L1 spacecraft. This was a critical movement for India's maiden solar mission, designed to uncover the mysteries of the Sun. The next manoeuvre is scheduled for September 10. 

After an unexpected solar storm event in the late night of September 2, that extended well into the morning of September 3, many scientists believe that such solar activities will now continue to increase till the equinox on September 23. During equinoxes, the Earth's magnetic poles (north and south) are at right angles to the solar wind. This makes the solar wind stronger, which can cause stronger magnetic storms. To increase the troubles, a new sunspot, AR3421, has also emerged directly in view of the Earth. The sunspot contains a mixed polarity magnetic field that can often create powerful solar flare eruptions. In case a large enough coronal mass ejection (CME) is released during the event, it can trigger a destructive solar storm.,

Over the last few months, we have witnessed several solar storm and geomagnetic storm impacts, and their frequency is likely to increase even more as we approach the solar maximum which could arrive in 2025. It is a period in the Sun's 11-year cycle where solar activity is at its peak, resulting in an increased number of dangerous solar phenomena such as solar storms, flares, CMEs, geomagnetic storms, and more.

It’s only been a few days since early access began, and we’ve already got some hilarious glitches to go along with the newly released Starfield. It’s no secret that Bethesda are experts when it comes to leaving fans with humorous and sometimes worrying bugs and glitches. A solar storm is heading for Earth today and the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) of the National Weather Service has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch for today, September 3, 2023. On this day, Earth may experience a G1 level geomagnetic storm, the mildest on the 1-5 scale. While this geomagnetic storm could cause some aurora displays and minor disruptions in electrical grids, navigation, and communication systems, it is not expected to be a severe event, according to spaceweather.com

India has sent its first spacecraft to study the Sun. This exciting mission, called Aditya-L1, took off from Sriharikota on a Saturday at 11:50 AM India time (06:20 AM GMT). It's going to travel really far – 1.5 million kilometers (932,000 miles) from Earth. That's only 1% of the distance between Earth and the Sun. It will take four months for Aditya-L1 to reach that far.

India's maiden solar mission successfully lifted off today, September 2 at 11:50 AM IST from the Satish Dhawan Centre in Sriharikota. The spacecraft, named Aditya-L1, has embarked on a 1.5 million-kilometer journey to the Sun, where it will be placed in the halo orbit around the first Lagrange point (L1) of the Sun-Earth system. Interestingly, Aditya-L1 will join four other spacecraft that are already placed in similar orbits - the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), Global Geospace Science (GGS) Wind and the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR).

The Aditya-L1 spacecraft was finally launched today, September 2, 2023, at 11.50 AM from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC-SHAR), Sriharikota. The spacecraft is now in good condition and is on its way towards the Sun-Earth system of Lagrange point (L1). The planned location is over 1.5 million km from the Earth and it will take about 125 days to reach the halo orbit. Know how the spacecraft will move towards the Sun.
