Pocketpair’s Palworld appeared during the recent ID@Xbox Showcase, with the upcoming Summer update receiving its first trailer. It revealed four new Pals, two new weapons, and a new island players will traverse. While the new Pal count may seem low, the developer reiterated that the roster will grow with subsequent updates.

Pocket Pair has released a new update for Palworld, currently live on PC and coming soon to Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. It offers several balance adjustments, like increasing the HP for all Alpha and Lucky Pals by 1.2. Breeding eggs also have a “slight chance” to yield an Alpha Pal, providing more of a reason to pursue them.

Palworld has teased four new beasts of burden for players to corral into their open world survival crafting sweatshops. The new pals are still unnamed but they appear to be the following: karate frog, confused peacock, dopey fungus, levitating sleeve creep. Within the confines of the arms manufacturing Pokélike, such creatures make sense. You can see them struggling to eke out an existence as a close personal friend of the player in the trailer below.

Pocketpair is working on adding PvP to Palworld via the Arena. However, in the meantime, it’s preparing a sizable Summer update. In a new trailer revealed during the ID@Xbox Showcase, the developer revealed the new island, Pals and weapons included in the update. Check it out below.

It’s hard to imagine that we’re going to get a bigger surprise hit in all of 2024 than Palworld. The survival game launched as an early access title in January, and within a month, it had attracted over 25 million players across all platforms. It’s safe to say that developer Pocketpair has very much put itself on the map- but what does it have planned for the future? Pocketpair released a new patch for Palworld yesterday, which addressed several issues. However, it also fixed a bug which allowed players to capture rival trainers. It was “unintentional”, according to the developer on Twitter, and it apologized for the same.

Or at least, that's what it sounds like they're saying between the lines of a statement published a few hours ago, in which the Pokémon Company acknowledges messages sent by the concerned PokéFaithful about "another company's game released in January 2024".

The Palworld-wide domination continues. Along with some truly monumental numbers on Steam, the open world survival and crafting game — which the internet has dubbed 'Pokémon with guns' — has seen its US numbers on Xbox briefly surpass those of perennial favourite Fortnite.

Nexus Mods — one of the biggest modding sites on the internet — has confirmed it won't be hosting Pokémon-themed Palworld mods, saying doing so would «almost certainly… put us at risk of legal action» given Nintendo's history of litigiousness.

As an early access game though, there’s still plenty more to come, and developer Pocketpair has offered a glimpse of what that will entail in a roadmap recently shared on Twitter.

Forthcoming Palworld updates will add PvP multiplayer arenas, raid bosses, Xbox feature improvements, Steam-Xbox crossplay, extra islands, server transfers, new Pals and new technologies, according to an early access roadmap just released by developers Pocketpair. The monster-catching survival sim continues to set concurrent play records on Steam, and Pocketpair are presently focussed on fixing bugs. Beyond that, though, the sky appears to be the limit, as you might expect of a game that shifted a million copies in eight hours. In particular, Pocketpair seem markedly more confident about the odds of adding PvP to the game, having downplayed the idea in interviews before release.

Pocketpair’s Palworld continues with its hot streak, selling over seven million copies since launching into early access on January 19th. This is roughly a day after crossing six million units sold. For comparison’s sake, Pokemon Legends: Arceus sold 6.5 million copies in its first week on the Nintendo Switch.

Palworld, that survival game mashup, continues to grow in popularity. In the past 24 hours, its peak concurrent player count reached 1,864,421, the second highest of any game on Steam, ever. It took that spot from Counter-Strike 2 and the only game to reach higher is now PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, aka Plunkbat, aka PUBG.

A new update for the PC Game Pass and Xbox versions of Palworld has fixed some of its many, many known issues today, but those hoping for some fixes to its online multiplayer options will sadly have to wait a little longer. Currently, those playing on Game Pass still don't have the ability to join or create dedicated servers for up to 32-player multiplayer like their mates on Steam can. Instead, they remain limited to just 2-4-player co-op via the use of friend codes, meaning that Game Pass players aren't having quite the same experience as their Steam counterparts.

As if it couldn’t beat any more records, Palworld is now the second-highest concurrently played game of all time on Steam. At 1,864,421 peak concurrent players, it’s beatenCounter-Strike 2’s record of 1,818,773. The only competition left is PUBG: Battlegrounds, with an all-time peak of 3,257,248 concurrent players.

PlayStation head of indies Shuhei Yoshida has suggested Palworld could be on its way to PlayStation.

I didn't think it was possible for Palworld's animal sweatshop-style base building to get even more bleak and depressing than it already was, but it turns out I was wrong. Last night, I reached a part of the game's Technology tree that sent an actual shiver down my spine, it was that awful and morbid. No, it wasn't the option to arm my leaf monkey with an assault rifle, or my green squirrels with machine guns - though they were on the same tech branch. Nope, this one was even more sinister, and I absolutely refuse to unlock it.

Having sold over 6 million copies within four days of its early access release and becoming the third most concurrently played game in Steam history, Palworld has, to say the very least, clearly got off to a stellar start, and the fact that it’s done that while not even being available on PlayStation has only made its success that much more impressive. It seems, however, that its availability on PlayStation consoles could also change soon.

While Palworld aspires to new heights, selling over six million copies in four days of launch, Xbox and PC players on the Microsoft Store are getting a lower-quality experience. It’s ultimately due to the versions differing from Steam and being at the “mercy” of the certification process. Nevertheless, an update is live and fixes several issues on those platforms.

There’s very little Palworld players have not done since getting their hands on the game. From capturing humans to the topic we’re talking about now. Palworld players are already exploiting a glitch to fast travel without Great Eagle Statues.

I don’t know what I expected when I started playing Palworld. My initial impression was that it was Pokemon with guns. Then, it seemed there could be some crafting elements. With early word out from some of the super early-access players, it was apparent there were heavy survival elements in Palworld. At this point, I was pretty confused.

If the accusations of Palworld peeking at Pokémon’s homework for its catchable monster designs weren’t already rife enough, a modder has decided to take the Garth Marenghi approach and remove any possible question by turning Palworld’s Pokémon-a-likes into just straight-up Pokémon.

While the game's mechanics are more reminiscent of Ark: Survival Evolved and other tree-punching, template-arranging wilderness sims, its monsters owe obvious debts to Nintendo and Game Freaks' Pokémon games.

I'm still working my way through the grim realities of Steam mega-hit Palworld, but as developers Pocketpair begin working through their 50,000-strong pile of bug reports, I'd hazard to add one more to the pile: please, something must be done about this game's ruthless police force, who are so dogged in their pursuit of evildoers that they literally will not stop chasing you until you've been shot dead.

It was inevitable — someone has already made a Pokémon mod for Palworld on PC.
