In the year that Greta Gerwig and the Mattel corporation got a postmodern comedy movie about Barbie dolls nominated for Best Picture, here’s another tribute to a famous Mattel toy line that’s maybe a little less sophisticated but, in its own way, no less genuine or self-aware. Masters of the Universe: Revolution, a five-part animated special on Netflix, is an enjoyably over-the-top celebration of the kitschy 1980s action figures.

Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series is set to adapt the first series in Nickelodeon's successful Avatar franchise. As with all adaptations, however, Netflix has opted to change some aspects of the story.

This weekend sees another bumper crop of new movies and shows arriving on streaming, so there's never been a better time to hunker down in front of the TV. First up, Second World War drama Masters of the Air kicks off on Apple TV Plus, featuring Austin Butler swapping Graceland for the cockpit, while new crime series Griselda hits Netflix. If you’re anything like us, you’re always on the lookout for the next big thing on Netflix. You might just be in luck: a taut 90-minute German-language thriller has suddenly leapt up the charts on the streamer.

Netflix announced on Thursday that it has signed an exclusive multi-film distribution deal with Studio Ponoc, the Japanese animation house billed as the heir to Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata’s famed Studio Ghibli. That deal means Netflix plans to distribute Ponoc’s upcoming anime movie The Imaginary around the world later this year, after the film’s exclusive Japanese premiere.

Alongside the numerous changes Apple is making to its platforms to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), the company is also updating its rules around streaming game services and other apps that provide access to mini-apps or games. The changes could impact companies like Netflix, which has expanded into mobile and cloud gaming in recent months, as well as efforts from other tech giants like OpenAI, which offers a GPT store, and Meta, which in 2022 had shut down its attempt at running a standalone Facebook Gaming app after failing to gain traction.

The Final Fantasy XIV live-action television series first announced back in 2019 is «dead,» according to the production company that was working on it. Hivemind, which also worked on Netflix's The Witcher, was developing the series with Sony Pictures Television, but co-founder Dinesh Shamdasani revealed on Twitter that the project is dead when asked about it, as reported by PC Gamer. 

Ever since Netflix took its first tentative steps into video games back in 2021, the company has reported a relatively modest response from subscribers, but new figures suggest its recent partnership with Rockstar to bring GTA to the streaming service has paid dividends, with monthly mobile game downloads nearly tripling to 28m in December 2023.

Last month would see one of the platform's biggest launches yet, with the GTA Trilogy coming to Netflix on mobile devices. Now, Netflix is reporting massive success from the game's launch.

The previously announced live-action Final Fantasy 14 TV series is now "dead," according to its studio's co-founder.

Netflix Games is doing better than ever, says Netflix. But that may not be saying much, given past data on the streaming service's gaming offering.

Netflix said that user engagement with games on the service tripled in 2023. “[Despite] games still being small, and certainly not yet material relative to our film and series business, we’re pleased with this progress,” the company said in its earnings report on Tuesday. As an example, the company pointed to the addition of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy to the service last year, although it isn't clear how much the trilogy, which only arrived on Netflix on December 14, helped drive engagement in the final two weeks of the year.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season just wrapped up this past December, earning the series its second Anime of the Year nomination at this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards after taking home the award back in 2021. The story of Yuuji Itadori, a physically gifted high schooler turned jujutsu sorcerer (think exorcist) in training, has struck a chord among anime fans and discerning critics alike. In her review for Polygon, Chingy Nea went so far as to champion Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season as “the first shonen about modern humanity.”

After 31 years on television, World Wrestling Entertainment Raw’s run as TV champion is coming to an end, but only so its reign on streaming can begin. WWE has signed a new deal with Netflix that will make the streaming service the exclusive home of WWE’s flagship series, Raw, in the United States. The deal was announced on Tuesday and will also move many of WWE’s other series over to Netflix, particularly outside the United States.

In a shocking move, WWE Monday Night Raw is moving from USA Network to Netflix in 2025.

Riot Games announced another big round of layoffs for the second year in a row. This time around, the studio mainly known for the League of Legends franchise plans to remove 11% of its large workforce. Around 530 employees will lose their jobs, although they will get benefits such as six months of severance pay at minimum, cash bonuses, and others.

Easily, one of the biggest “problems” with certain media is their desire to “look cool” and try to bring in people to get their games. Ironically, the latest example of this comes from Persona 3 Reload, which isn’t even out yet. Atlus dropped a live-action trailer for the game starring Aidan Gallagher. Who’s that? He’s one of the stars of The Umbrella Academy, where he plays the time traveler called “Five.” He was in the trailer to remind players that within the game, “your time is limited.” So, the connections track, at least.

But how much do you know about his backstory, and how he became the "Evil Lord of Destruction" he's been billed as in the Masters of the Universe franchise? Well you're about to learn a whole lot, as Dark Horse Comics will publish a new prequel comic that explores Skeletor's backstory, and how it relates to his fellow villain Hordak.

League of Legends’ lore has grown so large and in-depth that it can no longer be contained by just the original game. It’s now spilled out into projects like Netflix animated series Arcane and the Riot Forge games. Each Riot Forge game is published by Riot and developed by a smaller studio with the freedom to explore a smaller slice of Runeterra. Vince Staples is getting his own Netflix series. The rapper, and occasional actor, first tweeted about his show on Monday, but it wasn’t until Wednesday that we got our first look at it in Netflix’s new trailer and it already looks great. The series, called The Vince Staples Show, will premiere on Feb. 15.

The makers of Baldur’s Gate 3 have made it pretty clear that the game won’t be coming to subscription services like Xbox Game Pass any time soon, saying they believe the amount they charge for the game is fair. Now in a new statement responding to Ubisoft saying we should get used to no longer owning games, Larian boss Swen Vincke has gone a step further.

Earlier this week, Ubisoft's director of subscriptions Phillipe Tremblay sparked massive controversy when he said that gamers need to get used to "not owning your games". Baldur's Gate 3 lead and Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke disagrees, going as far as to say that "you won't find our games on a subscription service".

Ubisoft appears to be developing a Far Cry spin-off based on the Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix animated series, some newly emerged evidence suggests. Called Captain Laserhawk Niji Warrior, the game in question is poised to be the series' first spin-off since the Zero Latency-developed Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity, which hit the market in June 2021.

After initially planning to launch the series in late February, the premiere date of Pokémon Horizons on Netflix has been pushed back a couple of weeks. The next iteration of the anime series will now launch the first week of March in the United States.
