EVE Online celebrates its 21st birthday this year, as its Capsuleer Day XXI celebrations continue to rage on throughout New Eden.

A Warrior in WoW Classic runs through a field, culling the same pack of boars over and over again. A Lord of the Rings Online player slaves for hours trying to scrape out their next title. A Foxhole maniac hacks away at the mines, feeding the insatiable beast of the war machine.

The celebration for Elder Scrolls Online has begun. Alongside all of the rewards, in-person events, and in-game events, fans get to feast their eyes on a miniature version of different locations from the game. 

During the Blizzard Content Creator Summit, developers Sean McCann and Michael Bybee revealed some insight on World of Warcraft's The War Within expansion, giving more clarity on Delves, new mechanics, and features, as well as a little bit of information on Early Access. 

The Switch version of free-to-play massively multiplayer online RPG Caravan Stories will end service on June 13 at 11:00 JST, publisher Aiming and developer Team Caravan announced.

World of Warcraft: Plunderstorm will soon come to an end, as Blizzard confirmed that the limited-time battle royale will conclude its initial run on Tuesday, April 30. However, to tide World of Warcraft players over, Blizzard also stated that the reputation gained from taking part in Plunderstorm will be doubled starting with the April 16 weekly maintenance.

The nostalgia hits keep on coming with World of Warcraft as Blizzard is not only adding Cataclysm to World of Warcraft: Classic, but also kicking off a new time-limited event that will feature arguably one of the game’s most well-received expansions: 2012’s Mists of Pandaria.

The PlayStation 5 version of DC Universe Online is now available, developer Daybreak Game Company announced. The Xbox Series version is coming soon.

The Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail expansion will launch on July 2, Square Enix announced. Pre-orders will begin on March 26 and include three days of early access to the expansion on June 28, among other bonuses.

In a new trailer for GDC 2024, Chrono Odyssey looked even more incredible than the last time it was shown. Three years ago, the first-ever trailer for Chrono Odyssey was shown. Developer Npixel described its second game as a «Spacetime Epic Fantasy MMORPG,» and the trailer teased a tense fantasy world full of spectacle, showcasing many different magic powers and teasing a high-stakes story. That cinematic trailer still looks as impressive as the cutscene graphics for most PS5 releases, like Final Fantasy 16.

Kakao Games will publish open-world action MMORPG Chrono Odyssey from South Korean studio NPIXEL and its subsidiary Chrono Studio, the companies announced. It will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam.

Heading into 2024, we knew of a couple of heavy hitter MMOs coming out with their next expansions. From Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail this summer, to World of Warcraft launching two expansions, one for each Classic and Retail, the year was already looking pretty meaty for MMO fans.

Historic and long-running MMORPGs EverQuest and EverQuest 2 are respectively turning 25 and20 in 2024, and the developers have announced a full lineup of year-long events and new expansions to celebrate. The legendary franchise shows no signs of stopping, especially with EverQuest just having released its 30th expansion Laurion's Song in December.

Publisher Bethesda Softworks and developer ZeniMax Online Studios announced have announced The Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road, the next big expansion for the massively multiplayer online RPG. It will launch for PC on June 3, followed by PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on June 18.

Finally, equal presence for all races: the female Hrothgar race has been unveiled for the next Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail . Hrothgar women were showed off in their own gameplay video as part of the Fan Festival in Tokyo’s keynote, unveiling new information about the expansion and future content.

At long last, the Final Fantasy 14 team has reached the final live event of this season in Japan, the FFXIV Fan Festival in Tokyo, where it’s likely to receive a warm, excited welcome from plenty of excited fans in its home country. It’s also the last in-person event before the new Dawntrail expansion drops sometime this summer.

2023 was a good year for MMORPGs. Even without a major new MMO release, we saw plenty of good expansions hit older MMOs. Even with the expansion hoopla, I spent less time playing MMOs in 2023 than in any year since 2004. I just couldn't pull myself away from all of the great single-player and co-op titles that were released this year. Baldur’s Gate 3, a  trip back to Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Motorsport, and several other great games took every minute of gaming I had available.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen's developer, Visionary Realms, has addressed the community's disappointment following the canceled Pre-alpha test over the weekend. To make amends, the company announced it will be holding three new tests this week, despite the issue that caused the cancelation still persisting.

With World of Warcraft: Dragonflight winding down and getting ready to start prepping us for The War Within , it feels like a good time to look back at the highs and lows before we plunge headfirst into new things. Dragonflight did what it needed to do for me, which reminded me why I love World of Warcraft so much. It hasn’t all been perfect, but it’s worth taking stock of what was done well and what might need more iteration.

2023 has been a weird year. We've seen multiple MMORPG expansions come down to us, despite not really having one from one of the major hitters in the genre, while we've also seen excellent games release across the industry as a whole. It was a banner year especially for RPGs, with games like Final Fantasy XVI, Sea of Stars and, of course, Baldur's Gate 3 launching to much critical acclaim.

EVE Vanguard's First Strike Event ended this week, with the team at CCP Games thanking fans for taking part in the first of what will be many play tests on the road to a full FPS launch. We also have an idea as to when the next one should take place: January 2024.

While World of Warcraft Classic already had a burgeoning Hardcore scene, Season of Discovery brought back players who were otherwise disinterested in losing their characters and progress permanently after an untimely death. The servers were packed to the brim once it launched on November 30, 2023. The MMO became utterly unresponsive when I tried to log in and create my character as soon as it went live, but I managed to make it through what would become a dense hundred-plus-player queue on the RP server Lava Lash. 

There is a joke thatEVE Online is simply spreadsheets in space, so the joke came full circle when EVE announced it was adding in an Excel add-on last year at Fanfest. The circle continued this past weekend as it was one of the partners, and case study for the final round of the Microsoft Excel World Championships in Las Vegas.

Warframe's upcoming expansion, Whispers in the Walls, has a release date as revealed at The Game Awards. The next chapter in the story crafted by Canadian studio Digital Extremes is coming on December 13th.

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard about Fortnite . I mean, who hasn’t? Epic Games’ pop media juggernaut has done quite a bit over the last six years. Anyone who plays (I play way too much with my family) knew there would be new goodies in Chapter 5, but being a full-functioning Survival MMO wasn’t on my bingo sheet. Add in the fact that this is all Lego-themed, and my head is spinning.

As EVE Online was headed towards downtime last week in anticipation of its next expansion, Havoc , a player named Jay Amazingness, decided to wreak a little havoc of his own. Ahead of downtime, the longtime Goonswarm player decided to strike at the very heart of the alliance he has spent his EVE career within, pulling the clone bay from two structures in 1DQ and stealing pretty much anything that wasn’t nailed down — from cold, hard ISK to ships, including multiple Titans.

Back at EVE Fanfest, CCP Games officially unveiled its upcoming FPS module set in the EVE Universe,EVE Online: Vanguard. Now we know when players will get their hands on the FPS this year.

In November 2004, Blizzard Entertainment released World of Warcraft, a game that would forever change the landscape around MMORPGs. World of Warcraft became part of the cultural zeitgeist — commercials featuring a wide range of celebrities played on television at all hours of the day, episodes of popular TV shows featured offhanded mentions of the MMO, or were even centered around it entirely. 

After announcing they were pulling the maligned 247 extraction mode, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen's developers held a Discord Q&A discussing the reversal, as well as answering questions from the community.

Betrayals and EVE Online are almost synonymous with each other twenty years into the MMO's operation, but a heist pulled off at the expense of one of the MMO's most powerful alliances hit a bit differently yesterday as Havoc launched.

Maplestory’s major content release, New Age, is imminently releasing. With this update comes the introduction to the Sixth Job advancement, a very big deal for late-game and end-game players. The Korean version of Maplestory has had this update for several months, so many enfranchised players have at least seen much of what the update offers.
