When the Nintendo Switch first came out in 2017, a rumor sprouted out early about a “unique collaboration” between Mario and the infamous Rabbids. The rumor was so “weird” that gamers truly felt it was fake and that if it was real, it would be a terrible thing. When the collaboration was released later that year, gamers couldn’t get enough of it. So much so that Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle became the best-selling 3rd party Switch game at a time, and it wasn’t long before its sequel, Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope, was announced. But that game had a unique “behind the scenes” story all its own.

Not long after Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope’s launch, Ubisoft revealed that in spite of the widespread acclaim it had garnered, the turn-based tactics title had failed to sell to the company’s internal expectations, with CEO Yves Guillemot later stating that the game likely would have sold better if it had been released for the Nintendo Switch’s successor, something that Nintendo has advised Ubisoft on as well.

Although weeks away, the upcoming release date for is exciting news for fans of the classic franchise by Atlus. In the game, players will be able to slightly revisit the experience provided by fan-favorite and award-winning RPG. However, this happens from a different lens, both in terms of narrative and gameplay, as the new title offers a fresh dive into the critically acclaimed game. is set during the same period as the original title, but tells an alternate story and, curiously, leans deeply into the teachings left behind by Ubisoft and Nintendo’s .

Sometimes, it’s a no-brainer that a video game should get a follow-up, spinoff, or direct sequel. Whether it’s because the gameplay is incredible, the story has room to be expanded, or the game overall is just a fun time, it’s usually easy to see whether a game is doing well enough for a sequel to be made. For Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope, that success is harder to gauge. Part of it is because Ubisoft has been not-so-subtle jerks about the game since its release in October of 2022. The game had universal praise from fans and critics and seemed to be on its way to glory on every level.

When it comes to video game icons, gamers sometimes have a misconception that every game with them is good and that their titles come out at a good clip to ensure their “icon status” stays as it is. However, that’s not true, and it’s not uncommon for an icon to go on “hiatus” for one reason or another. A great example can be found with Ubisoft. While they have numerous titles and IPs that they’re working on, none of them involve the gaming icon that was associated with them for so long. Typically, when you’re a gaming icon, you get plenty of titles to show you off and keep you “fresh” in the minds of gamers. But in the case of Rayman, his story is a bit more complicated. He was once Ubisoft’s mascot and had console and handheld games for fans to enjoy. Plus, his unique look and abilities made it so his games played slightly different from other competitors. But then, ironically, he created his “replacement” when Ubisoft put the character against the Rabbids. Their brand took off, and he took a back seat for many years.

At long last, the final piece of DLC for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope has arrived. So far, we’ve entered the “Tower of Doom” and had to fight “The Last Spark Hunter,” but now, we’re going to see the return of a gaming icon. Rayman was the character that was Ubisoft’s mascot for some time, and it was because of Rayman that the Rabbids franchise was born in the first place. But when their popularity took off, the beloved character was thrown into the background. But no more! Today, “Rayman in the Phantom Show” will put the character back where he belongs: in the spotlight.

Just like Mario did when he ran into the Phantom in the first Mario + Rabbids game, Rayman's encounter with the ghostly opera Rabbid in the Phantom Show DLC sees him getting brutally roasted, from being called an eggplant to getting called out for the Rabbids taking over his games.

Since Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope was announced years back, gamers have been eager to get their hands on it. They had to wait a while, but by the end of 2022, they could experience Ubisoft’s passion as they took Mario and the Rabbids into space to face all-new threats. Fast forward to now, and the game has already had multiple DLC additions, with the final one on its way. The final DLC story is special because it features Ubisoft icon Rayman returning to the video game space for the first time in many years. He’ll team up with Rabbid Peach and Rabbid Mario to take down a familiar foe.

In the video game industry, most people would tell you that game sales are the most important thing to have. After all, if your game doesn’t sell well and you don’t make a profit, then you won’t be able to make more games. However, as gaming fans will tell you, sometimes developers and publishers put too high of expectations on titles and then complain when they don’t meet the “high end” of those expectations. An example of this from last year was Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope by Ubisoft. The title was great, but Ubisoft felt its launch was “disappointing.”

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope hasn’t worked out as well for Ubisoft as the company would have expected after the success of its predecessor. Where Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle pulled in over 10 million players in its lifetime, Sparks of Hope hasn’t gained nearly as much traction. Shortly after its release, Ubisoft confirmed that it had performed below expectations, and more recently, suggested that it would likely have sold better if it had released for Nintendo’s next platform instead of for the Switch.

Ubisoft has revealed Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope: Rayman in the Phantom Show, the final announced DLC coming to the Nintendo mashup strategy game that hit Switch last October. 

It seemed pretty obvious from the start that Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope would have DLC. If for no other reason than Ubisoft had done a DLC expansion for the original game between these two franchises. But what surprised some people was that the DLC we got was robust and unique. We got a challenge tower, we got some story content that fit between the main campaign, and now, we’re going to get content featuring Rayman! The best part is that we now know what the content will be, and it will be crazy!

Mario + Rabbids is an adorable cross-over game between Nintendo’s poster child Mario and Ubisoft’s Minion-esque Rabbids. The latest game in the franchise collab is Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, which is a sequel to the first, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Both games are currently on Nintendo Switch.

Rayman's long-awaited return mightn't be quite what fans were hoping for — arriving as he is in a bit of DLC for the excellent Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope instead of his own game — but something's (hopefully) better than nothing, and Ubisoft has now confirmed its beloved limb-flinging mascot will be making his entrance on 30th August this year.
