Away from the buzz of Hollywood sets and the fervor that comes with being a breakout Netflix star, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan enjoys playing video games in her basement.
Hollywood has really begun flexing its video game adaptation muscle in the wake of the spectacular success of the FalloutTV show and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Even indie publishers are getting some of those sweet, sweet development contracts. Case in point? The hit third-person shooter El Paso, Elsewhere is being adapted into a feature length film, as reported by Deadline.
Two years after debuting in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it seems a Hollywood leading man of sufficient talent has finally been found to portray the edgy Shadow the Hedgehog. Keanu Reeves, who needs no introduction but will get one anyway, is the star of film franchises like The Matrix and John Wick, and, of course, Cyberpunk 2077, has been confirmed to play the part.
Lately, there seems to be a common theme that Hollywood is taking ginger characters from comics worldwide and casting Black actors. Of course, representation is always fabulous, but why is it happening with all the redheads? While some might find the choice to replace all the ginger comic characters and change their ethnicity entirely strange, I went and did some research and found a very interesting through-line with many of the actors that have been chosen to replace these characters. Interested? Keep reading!
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is bringing Shadow into the cinematic fold, and contrary to some long-standing rumors, he's going to be voiced by none other than the breathtaking Keanu Reeves.
As if casting Idris Elba in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 wasn't enough of a scoop, this year's third Sonic movie will reportedly see the eternally youthful Keanu Reeves take on the role of Shadow.
When Sega dubbed 2024 the year of Shadow the Hedgehog, the company really wasn’t kidding. Now, it’s looking like beloved actor Keanu Reeves may be the voice of Sonic’s rival in the Sonic 3 movie. The casting was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, citing multiple anonymous sources.

The Prince of Persia has gone rogue! No, I don’t mean that he’s married a Hollywood actress, moved to California, and spilled the royal tea in a tell-all interview with Oprah. I mean he’s starring in his first 2D roguelite. Hot off the heels of the series’ excellent return to form in January’s The Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, his sword-swinging highness is stepping away from the Metroidvania structure and into the procedurally generated, live, die, repeat mold of Dead Cells, in The Rogue Prince of Persia. While I’ve only had a very short amount of hands-on time with the upcoming adventure, the early signs suggest that this could well be the second dazzling jewel added to the Prince’s crown in less than the space of a year.
Sugar star Colin Farrell talks his first reaction to the script – and what made him sign on to the role.
Colin Farrell says his upcoming neo-noir detective series Sugar and his Batman spin-off show The Penguin are polar opposites – with the later being a complete and total trip to the dark side.
Star Trek actor and director Jonathan Frakes has some high praise for Strange New Worlds season 3.
There are times when Open Roads hits alarmingly close to home. Early on in this interactive road trip, your 16-year-old protagonist Tess turns around to reach for a bag perched in the back of her mom’s vintage station wagon – without skipping a beat, she’s accosted by her mother, Opal, from behind the wheel. The altercation flooded my brain with memories of family road trips in the early 2000s: “You can’t just turn around. It’s unsafe,” my dad would say from his vehicular throne, despite how frustratingly close I was to grabbing my Game Boy. Parental authority and nostalgia are just a few of the powerful tools Open Roads harnesses to deliver a playful and relatable story about coming of age in the early aughts, however, hastily resolved problems and the lack of an engaging mystery also make this adventure a little too predictable to leave a lasting impression.
Late Night with the Devil star David Dastmalchian says the film's demonic talk show has something in common with Heath Ledger's Joker.
EA's The Sims is coming to the silver screen.
Blockbuster Inc is putting Hollywood in your hands this summer, as it lets you create parodies of your favorite films - or original masterpieces, of course - starting with the set and ending with the credits.
As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, a film version of The Sims is in the works with some pretty big names involved in the project.
The Will Smith-fronted zombie survival video game Undawn bombed, according to a new report.
There’s going to be a movie based The Sims, according to The Hollywood Reporter — and based on the people involved in producing and directing it, it’s worth taking pretty seriously.
It’s time to brush up on your Simlish. The Sims movie is in the works – and it’s got a creative dream team behind it.
EA’s long-running life simulation series The Sims is being adapted into a movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
At this point, there’s a pretty good chance Microsoft’s going to port its Forza Horizon franchise to PS5 – but until that day arrives, The Crew Motorfest remains a welcome alternative. And with its third full season of content available now, publisher Ubisoft has announced the title’s first-ever free weekend, scheduled to get underway from 14th March through 18th March.
As the video game industry grows and the technological tools for turning flesh-and-bone actors into digital beings evolve, it’s only natural for Hollywood stars to become more present in games.
Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, had two key conditions when greenlighting new animated series X-Men ‘97. According to producer Brad Winderbaum, the MCU head wanted to make sure they tackled the reboot right.
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe hasn’t even had its first release, but that hasn’t stopped the studio from announcing new additions. The Teen Titans are the latest heroes getting their own live-action movie in the DCU, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
As a rule, things are never easy for the X-Men — something that seems to apply in real life as well as comic books. In a shocking update from The Hollywood Reporter, Beau DeMayo, creator and showrunner of the highly-anticipated X-Men ’97 animated series on Disney Plus, has been fired a week before the show’s March 20 premiere.
Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue for the 2024 Oscars started out pretty run-of-the mill. There were jokes about how Killers of the Flower Moon was long enough to “drive to Oklahoma and solve the murders yourself,” a Madame Web shoutout, and a pretty good topical gag about the viral Republican rebuttal to the State of the Union address last week. But then Kimmel ended his monologue on something remarkable: a quippy, yet sincere and full-throated speech in support of Hollywood’s labor unions.
A Daredevil: Born Again fan has spotted a set for the new Disney Plus show on the streets of Brooklyn, New York City, which confirms the return of a location from the Defenders Saga and hints at some potential Marvel Easter eggs.
Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann doesn't think he will be in the business of making video games forever, at least not at the scale we would expect from the storied creative. He is best known for his work on both Uncharted and The Last of Us; in fact, it was the experience of adapting the latter for HBO, something he «really enjoyed», along with moving into a stage of life where «your kids are number one», which prompted thoughts of a sea change.
Kevin Costner could have phoned it in. Yellowstone, TV maven Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western melodrama Paramount Network, was riding high in the ratings going into 2023, and Costner had a strong platform in the leading role. But during negotiations for season 6, the 69-year-old actor walked away. He had other dreams: specifically, directing a four-part Western epic titled Horizon. Costner has blamed creative differences with Paramount and Sheridan over reported flaring tensions on the Yellowstone set, but ultimately, as he said in a recent divorce proceeding, he left over scheduling conflicts — with his own movie. (Next time you don’t want to follow through on previously made plans, feel free to use this same excuse.)
Mike Le was furious. Maybe sad? There was a touch of despair. On the morning of Dec. 9, 2008, news broke that M. Night Shyamalan had cast his upcoming live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. Le, then a grad student at UCLA, was a huge fan of the animated series — but Shyamalan’s take for Paramount Pictures looked like a disaster. In his mind, Avatar was an explicitly Asian-inspired fantasy, an Eastern Lord of the Rings with martial arts. So why were all of Shyamalan’s actors white?
Foundation co-creator David S. Goyer has stepped back from his showrunner duties on the Apple TV Plus sci-fi show due to clashes over budget, The Hollywood Reporter has claimed.
Nintendo has been pretty much synonymous with console videogames for over forty years, thus securing a huge and extremely loyal fanbase that keeps loving and purchasing its consoles and games. Sometimes, you can find some of its most hardcore fans in the most unexpected places - such as Hollywood. Academy Award winner Brie Larson, for instance, is a huge Nintendo aficionado, as she confessed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, American Born Chinese)will write and direct Lionsgate’s long-gestating live-action movie based on Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto.
Steven Spielberg has revealed his pick for the best movie he's ever made.
According to a piece in The Hollywood Reporter on Friday, director Dan Trachtenberg has gotten the greenlight for a second Predator movie, following his straight-to-Hulu horror-thriller Prey. But while Prey’s critical success and streaming success as Hulu’s most-watched premiere ever had fans expecting a Prey 2 would eventually be made, the report says Trachtenberg’s new Predator movie will be called Badlands, and will be set “sometime in the future.”
The winner in the Oscar nominations race Tuesday after a bruising year for the film industry was “Oppenheimer” with 13 nods, followed by the otherworldly “Poor Things” with 11 and the period epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10 and yes, Barbie was there too. 2023 was marred by strikes and work stoppages for the cinema world, throwing production and release schedules into chaos. Looking to catch up ahead of the Academy Awards on March 10? Here's how (and where) to watch Oscar-nominated films online:
Wizards of the Coast and Resolution Games have announced their collaboration to bring Dungeons & Dragons to virtual reality.
For years now, pundits have been declaring that movie stardom is dead. Everyone from Jennifer Aniston to The New York Times seems to have agreed that we simply don’t make ’em like we used to.
One of my oldest memories is of a time when my sister wouldn’t let my Ghostbusters action figures bust ghosts in her Barbie doll house. The exclusion was my only major exposure to the toy.
Sony is continuing to mine its back catalog of games for movie adaptations while persistently forgetting that Bloodborneis right there. Its next game that's bound for the big screen is Until Dawn, a 2015 interactive horror title that Supermassive Games developed and Sony published.
A PlayStation horror classic is being reborn as a film. The choose-your-own-nightmare from Supermassive Games, Until Dawn, is one of the latest video games announced to make the jump from your living room TV to the big screen, though this one seems far more straightforward.
It has been announced that Until Dawn, the choice-driven horror title by Supermassive Games that first launched way back in 2015, currently has a movie adaptation in the works, and will be helmed by Shazam! director David F. Sandberg.
Until Dawn is the next popular video game to get the live-action treatment.
Developer Supermassive Games' branching-narrative horror, Until Dawn, which exclusively hit PlayStation in 2015, is the latest video game to get the film adaptation treatment. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Shazam! and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg will direct the Until Dawn movie.
Noah Hawley says his Alien prequel series will ignore the backstory provided by Alien: Covenant and Prometheus.
You might be wondering about The Mandalorian season 4 after the surprise announcement that a movie is in the works. Star Wars has revealed that Mando and Grogu will be hitting the big screen, and, at the moment, it's unclear just what that means for the next installment of the hit Disney Plus TV show.
Tom Cruise's new deal with Warner Bros. has given the studio hope that he may return for Edge of Tomorrow 2, which is currently in development.
If you’re interested in The Last of Us season two news, then we have yet another piece to share with you. This week, we’ve seen a couple of cast announcements. Today, that trend continues as there is now another actress we can add to this show. It looks like the production has unveiled who is stepping into Dina’s role. It seems like this character will get portrayed by actress Isablea Merced, another essential character for this season is locked in.
A return to the zombie-infested world of 28 Days Later has long been rumored, but we finally have something concrete. A sequel is in the works with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, who directed and wrote the 2002 original movie respectively, working on the third film, 28 Years Later.
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have revealed the plot of their scrapped Star Wars movie – and we're already missing what could have been.
David Benioff and Dan Weiss, creators of the Game of Thrones HBO show, have explained more about their scrapped Star Wars film, saying "we weren't the droids [Lucasfilm] were looking for".
The Last of Us season 2 has found its Abby in Kaitlyn Dever, confirming previous reports. In a tweet, HBO confirmed that the Booksmart star will be playing the second protagonist — some prefer seeing her as a villain — in the post-apocalyptic series, posing a new challenge to Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey). Interestingly, Dever had a prior connection to the show when fans lobbied the studio to cast her as the 13-year-old Ellie, due to her facial resemblance to the in-game character and her involvement in the Uncharted 4 game — also from developer Naughty Dog. However, co-creator Neil Druckmann and the team opted for a younger actor in Ramsey, who in my opinion, nailed the role.
Our Flag Means Death, Taika Waititi's romantic pirate comedy, has been canceled after two seasons at Max.
When it comes to “Hollywood crossovers” in video games, they can be hit or miss. Sometimes, Hollywood tries to make a video game based on a hit movie or franchise and “squeeze some extra money out of it.” Other times, celebrities will cameo or have big roles in video games to try and “bring extra attention” to it and have people come just for the celebrity. And then, there’s Tekken 8. They don’t have any celebrity cameos within the game itself, but for a special “The Story So Far” trailer, they decided to bring in the one and only Brian Cox to narrate everything that’s happened leading up to the new game. Why? Because they can.
Bandai Namco just released a very special five-minute recap of the history of the Mishima clan, to hype us up for Tekken 8’s release on January 26. And it’s narrated by none other than Succession‘s own Brian Cox.
The Gravity Rush movie just got a surprise glimpse during Sony's CES 2024 presentation. No release or plot details were revealed but the footage, a showcase for Torchlight — the company's newest visualisation tech — showed one of the characters leaping off a building, straight into some rubble dominated by a red, winged demon ready to fight back. The video largely cuts between CGI and motion capture clips, proving that previous reports about it being a live-action adaptation were wrong. Anna Mastro (Secret Society of Second Born Royals) was attached to direct the film then, from a script by Emily Jerome (Panopticon), marking her second writing gig.
Succession and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer were the biggest winners at the 2024 Golden Globes awards, which felt a little predictable given how thoroughly they dominated their respective categories — particularly the acting categories, which in a couple of different cases had three Succession performers dueling for the top spot. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie didn’t fare as well in the mix, even though it was nominated in many of the categories — ultimately, it only walked away with Best Original Song and the “Cinematic And Box Office Achievement” award.

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, the celebrity’s hit mobile game from Glu Mobile, is shutting down in April, just short of its 10-year anniversary in June. Booting up the free-to-play mobile game now yields a notice announcing that in-app purchases have been turned off in advance of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood’s April 8 shut-off date. A Glu Mobile representative on the Kim Kardashian: Hollywood forum confirmed the game’s been removed from app stores, but it’s still playable until April 8 for people who already have it downloaded.
What are the biggest movies coming in 2024? Surprisingly, there aren't as many superhero films gracing theatres this year, with DC Studios preparing to launch just one, Joker: Folie à Deux, a sequel to Todd Phillips' grounded Batman universe, introducing a new player into the mix. On the Marvel side, we've got four movies — Kraven the Hunter, Deadpool 3, Venom 3, and Madame Web — all suffered shifting release dates due to the Hollywood labour strikes. Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two was another major casualty of the strikes. Originally set to debut in November last year, it got pushed into March when the actors' union barred its star-studded cast — featuring the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh — from promotional duties and interviews.
One of Marvel Studios' upcoming movies has lost an A-list cast member – Steven Yeun has dropped out of Thunderbolts, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It’s the final days of 2023, and voices everywhere are predicting the final days of the superhero movie. Even that bastion of the mainstream, the New York Times, is getting in on the eulogies. It’s no wonder, with this year’s solid string of financial and critical flops ebbing into 2024’s low-tide lineup of a mere three “interconnected universe” movies, Deadpool 3, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter.
Have you heard? 2023 was the year concert films saved cinema — or at least boosted movie theaters. Normally, it would be difficult to wrangle up enough notable entries to warrant an end-of-year concert movie ranking, but not this year. This year, the concert film ruled. Taylor Swift and Beyoncé sidestepped Hollywood to work directly with theaters for the distributions of their respective box-office champions. Culture-shifting global superstars BTS managed to make waves in theaters, despite being on group hiatus for all of 2023. And Hollywood indie darling A24 re-released 1984’s Stop Making Sense, widely considered to be one of the best concert films of all time.
Amid rising concerns and multiple legal battles of authors, publishers, and media houses over large language models (LLMs) using their copyrighted work to train AI systems, the New York Times has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. The publisher has alleged that the two AI firms have been using the former's copyrighted published work unauthorized to train their respective AI models. This lawsuit has now heightened the conflict between publishers and AI companies, as regulatory institutions still try to figure out the right way to control and monitor the data AI models are trained on.
Biographical dramas are all the rage these days. People love to know about the lives of inspiring people, and moviemakers are adept at bringing out stories that do the same. In recent times, we have seen Khufiya, Scam 2003, Mission Raniganj, and Hollywood's Oppenheimer become successful at the box office and win the hearts of the viewers in the process. If it has also become your favorite genre and you're looking for more inspiration, you should take a look at 12th Fail. The movie, featuring Vikrant Massey, narrates a story that would be relatable to a lot of people who struggled or are struggling with their academics. The movie is a reminder that even when you are battling against all odds, you can still grab victory. So, find out when and where to watch the 12th Fail OTT release online.
There may not be a single movie more influential than Seven Samurai, and for good reason. Akira Kurosawa’s epic tale of a group of warriors hired by a village to protect them from bandits is so consequential in the history of global cinema that it’s impossible to fully track all the movies and shows that stem from it.
Marvel's Thunderbolts movie will soon be going into production, according to star Wyatt Russell.
Lieutenant Columbo, played with average Joe charm and unshowy, easy-to-miss dexterity by Peter Falk, is more than meets the eye — to the bad guys, not us, because we know how things will turn out.
Some new details have leaked for Insomniac’s upcoming title, Marvel’s Wolverine.
Kang actor Jonathan Majors has been dropped by Marvel Studios. The actor was found guilty of reckless assault in the third degree and harassment on December 18. Following this, a Marvel spokesperson confirmed the studio will no longer work with Majors.
If you haven’t heard, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a really, really good game. Just, so good. When the semi-regular cast of Beyond was asked to decide our best PlayStation game of 2023, several of us immediately blurted out Baldur’s Gate 3, and no one else had any objections. So, there are plenty of write-ups on IGN and elsewhere about why it’s so great, but I wanted to reflect a little on how it seemingly came out of nowhere. Make no mistake, this game is 100% Game of the Year material. It almost was IGN’s overall pick, losing to Zelda by a handful of votes. That said, it seems like a miracle that such a dense, unabashedly technical entry in a 23-years-dormant franchise would have such widespread appeal.
Death Stranding is coming to the big screen, thanks to a partnership between indie film studio A24 and game developer Kojima Productions. The announcement comes ahead of the Hideo Kojima-helmed studio's 8th anniversary. The film adaptation will focus on the mysteries surrounding the titular apocalyptic event that brought the nightmarish creatures called BT into the living world, blurring the lines between the dead and the living through a portal. Instead of a direct translation of the divisive 2019 video game, the film will serve as a companion piece that further expands the solitary universe. The world of Death Stranding is also set to return in DS2, a sequel announced at last year's The Game Awards.
Another Orphan sequel is officially in development, director William Brent Bell has revealed.
