The history of the roguelike genre isn't just that it is popular — it's ever-changing, from second to second, depending on who gets asked what defines it. While there are extremely strict definitions available for absolute purists, the general sense of a roguelike is that it features a decent number of qualities attributed to the original. Beyond those attributes, they're often defined by their innovations rather than their adherence to their genre, with plenty of roguelikes making a push for Game of the Year candidacy in their release years.

Evil Empire has announced a new Steam Early Access release date for The Rogue Prince of Persia, having nudged the game’s preview release back in the wake of Hades II’s own Early Access release. The Rogue Prince of Persia will now head into Steam Early Access on 27th May.

The prodigal Prince has returned, and his comeback has gone down so well that he is doing it a second time. After his Metroidvania adventures in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which came out in January, gaming's iconic dual-blade wielding royalty is coming back for seconds in The Rogue Prince of Persia, a new 2D action-platforming rogue-lite title, arriving in Early Access on Steam on May 14. Developed by Dead Cells maker Evil Empire and published by Ubisoft, the next Prince of Persia game flaunts a colourful, cartoony art style and features platforming and action combat familiar to the series.

Ubisoft’s legendary Prince of Persia franchise had been nearly dormant for over 10 years when a new side-scrolling spin-off titled Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was launched to rave reviews in January. Indie studio Evil Empire is teaming up with a host of other indie developers for a new showcase. Set for April 10 at 5pm GMT, the showcase has been dubbed the Triple-i Initiative, and will feature more than 30 indie games.

Roboquest is set to leave early access in the Autumn, as the roguelite FPS game from RyseUp Studios, now published by Payday makers Starbreeze Entertainment, prepares for its full 1.0 launch on Steam. Roboquest is probably one of the most moreish roguelites I’ve played in a while, with the fast-moving gameplay of Dead Cells, loot that’d make Borderlands proud, and that real ‘one more run’ compulsion, and its full release is set to arrive in the coming months.
