The deal is worth $460 million in stock and is expected to close by June 30. It had been rumored for several months that Embracer was planning to sell off Gearbox.

As with all video game adaptations, there has been some heated discourse surrounding the Borderlands film. Borderlands is based on the widely popular sci-fi first-person shooter of the same name and is admittedly not the easiest property to adapt. The first game is largely considered the weakest, with only a general overarching plot and no emotional character arc. Last year gamers were spoiled for content on TV and in the cinema; at last, we got some good adaptations of our favorite titles, such as the Last of Us and Super Mario Bros., proving that it is possible to translate a game to the screen. In fact, we’ve had a pretty good run for five years or so with Pokémon and Sonic movies too, but can we safely say the video game to movie curse is broken? Well the next movie to put that to the test would be Borderlands, and let’s just say it’s received a lukewarm reception so far.

In many ways, the Borderlands helped popularize the “looter shooter” games that we have now. Granted, how the Gearbox Software crew handled things for its series is different from what many are doing now with the genre, but the elements were all there right from the beginning. The concept of picking a character, each of whom was different, and then setting them off into the world of Pandora and beyond to blow stuff up, get stronger, and unleash incredible guns had fans in love and wanting more. So much so that Borderlands 4 is on their minds, and they think it’s coming soon.

Lost Boys Interactive provided support work on the Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, but the studio is now facing the ax with multiple departments set to lose staff.

What are the biggest movies coming in 2024? Surprisingly, there aren't as many superhero films gracing theatres this year, with DC Studios preparing to launch just one, Joker: Folie à Deux, a sequel to Todd Phillips' grounded Batman universe, introducing a new player into the mix. On the Marvel side, we've got four movies — Kraven the Hunter, Deadpool 3, Venom 3, and Madame Web — all suffered shifting release dates due to the Hollywood labour strikes. Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two was another major casualty of the strikes. Originally set to debut in November last year, it got pushed into March when the actors' union barred its star-studded cast — featuring the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh — from promotional duties and interviews.

Borderlands developer Gearbox is reportedly up for sale by parent company Embracer Group. As per Reuters, the Swedish conglomerate is looking to restructure following a $2 billion (about Rs. 16,586 crore) deal with Saudi Arabia government-funded Savvy Games Group that fell through, earlier this year. The fallout resulted in the former cutting down on spending, in addition to closing down studios and laying off its employees. Having been acquired merely two-and-a-half years ago, Gearbox is now the latest victim, with some alleged third-party publishers expressing interest in acquiring the developer. No names were mentioned, though they were described as “international gaming groups.”

Embracer Group completed its acquisition of Borderlands developer Gearbox Entertainment in April 2021 in a deal worth up to $1.4 billion, though it seems the Swedish firm is already considering reversing course. In a report published by Reuters, it’s been claimed that the Embracer Group is considering several options for Gearbox Entertainment, with a full sale being one among them.

Publisher 2K and developer Gearbox Software will release Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition for Switch on October 6 for $59.99, the companies announced.
