Various “trends” within the digital space over the last several years have come and gone and caused all sorts of problems along the way. But one problem that persists among certain groups is the plans for using AI not just in writing but also in art. You might recall that the Hollywood strike among writers and actors was partially caused by studios wanting to use AI scripts and pay writers less as a result or use AI to capture a person’s likeness and use them in films without consent. For video games like Foamstars, using AI isn’t “out of bounds” when it comes to art, apparently.

Wizards of the Coast has issued a statement on its latest AI art controversy, saying that it will "always" side with human artists. This comes after it concedes that its latest marketing images "may have" included "elements of generative AI", a claim it had previously denied.

Dungeons & Dragonsmaker Wizards of the Coast has acknowledged AI-generated artwork was published in its sourcebook Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants, which released digitally on Aug. 1 for those who pre-ordered it. The Hasbro-owned company said in a statement that it will update its policies going forward to keep AI-generated or assisted work out of its publications. Images remain online at D&D Beyond, and are expected to be included in the physical book when it is released on Aug. 15.
