We're counting down the most anticipated PC games coming in 2024 and beyond during the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted, but not everything in the show is yet to come. Featured during today's livestream was Sands of Aura, a top-down action RPG that hit 1.0 in October. Developed by 12-person studio Chasu Entertainment, Sands of Aura didn't ping my radar until recently.

Planet of the Apes is one of those franchises that won’t go away. The first entry hit theaters like an atomic bomb in 1968 and spawned four sequels, two television series, and a remakesteered by director Tim Burton in 2001. More recently, the Planet of the Apes reboot movies kicked off with 2011’s successful Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which paved the way for Matt Reeves’ critical and commercial smash Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014 and War for the Planet of the Apes in 2017.

20th Century Fox’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes went bananas this weekend, raking in a reported $55-56M per Deadline. Strong previews and a $20 million Saturday propelled the sci-fi adventure to the top of the charts, while a $72.5M international haul pushed its global tally to $129M ($13.2M from Imax).

Ten years ago, writer Drew McWeeny posed a question in the headline of his latest column: “Has life in the age of casual magic made moviegoers numb to the amazing?” Frustrated by news of what would be 2016’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, which he considered an unnecessary sequel to a film everyone saw and no one really loved, McWeeny revisited the film’s predecessor, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. He concluded that it was both a terrible movie and a technical marvel. McWeeny’s column articulated an existential crisis in both moviemaking and moviegoing: In a cinematic world without limits, the combination of extraordinary technical innovation and the lack of narrative ambition to match was making moviegoers numb.

The beloved survival game Don’t Starveis being adapted into a board game. Glass Cannon Unplugged, a studio known for creating tabletop renditions of other series like Frostpunk and Diablo, will lead creation of Don’t Starve: The Board Game in partnership with the original video game developer, Klei Entertainment. The game is set to launch via a Kickstarter campaign “near the end of the 3rd quarter in 2024,” a release said.

Glass Cannon Unplugged have just launched their Kickstarter campaign funding Don’t Starve: The Board Game.   We've seen plenty of the best board games come out in the past few years but Kickstarter-funded tabletop adaptations of video games are really having a moment right now. It was just last month that Glass Cannon Unplugged announced they were working on Dying Light: The Board Game, adding that to their expansive portfolio of board games like This War of Mine: The Board Game and Apex Legends: The Board Game (which we were very fond of when we previewed it). Gameplay wise, Don't Starve: The Board Game promises to be chock-full of "mechanics highlighting player choice, dynamic combat, and open-world exploration in night and day conditions". From the looks of the game’s box art and promotional materials, it also keeps that charming Tim Burton-esque art style that players have come to know and love. Turns out that expansions and add-ons are already on the cards too.

A talented Baldur's Gate 3 fan has showcased their amazing hand-made Orin doll, which gives the villain a Tim Burton-style makeover. Orin is one of the main villains in Baldur's Gate 3, becoming immensely popular with players thanks to the large role she plays late in the game's story.

The first for the Michael Keaton and Jenna Ortega-led sequel has been released by Warner Bros. The film is set to hit theaters on Friday, September 6, 2024.

Steven Spielberg’s 1991 fantasy Hook feels like the true father of Disney’s massive wave of live-action remakes and spinoffs of its classic animated features, but it wasn’t actually made by Walt Disney Studios. As a teenage comic book fan coming of age as superheroes were breaking into the mainstream, I always approached any conversation about Batman with a hipster’s sense of ownership. The song keys into a frequently stated motivation for this movie’s version of the character: He wants to use his candymaking magic to create a feeling of childlike wonder in his customers, and indeed, the whole world.

We've seen a few games that use stop-motion animation, but Harold Halibut might be the most impressive to date. I didn’t have Disney releasing two of the most stunning 4K Blu-rays on my 2023 entertainment bingo card, discs so good that they should make you consider buying movies again if you’ve been otherwise limited to streaming, but here we are. Is this the beginning of Disney giving 4K Blu-rays the TLC it once bestowed on VHS and DVD?

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, the 1993 animated movie that got a theatrical release (and is a longtime favorite of this author), has been remastered for 4K Blu-ray. It’s available for pre-order right now at several retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart, and it’ll launch on Sept. 12. The pre-order costs $33.99 (except for Target, where it’s $26.99), and it comes with the 4K UHD Blu-ray disc as well as a digital code to watch the film on other devices. This type of disc is viewable with the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and with other 4K Blu-ray players.
