Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian has revealed the current roadmap for updates to the game, including a patch that makes over 1,000 fixes and tweaks.

Taking to Twitter some hours ago, Larian Studios' Creative Director Swen Vincke shared a short Baldur's Gate 3 update roadmap.

Larian boss Swen Vincke has revealed that the studio is currently working on a number of updates to critically-acclaimed RPG Baldur’s Gate 3. Among updates coming to the game, it is slated to get Hotfix 4, its first major patch with over 1,000 fixes and tweaks, and a second patch that will bring in some fan-requested features to the game.

Following Baldur's Gate 3's wildly successful PC launch and a few bug-squashing hotfixes, Larian CEO Swen Vincke says that the D&D RPG will get one more hotfix (there have been three so far) before its first big patch, which will include "+1,000 fixes and tweaks." That patch will then be followed by—and you might've been able to guess this—another patch, one which'll start to respond to player suggestions.

Baldur's Gate 3 Act 1, which by most estimates should take you between 30 and 40 hours to complete, is just a very long tutorial, Larian says.

I've struggled at times on Baldur's Gate 3's normal difficulty, so I can only imagine how it feels for players who are brand new to D&D or Larian RPGs. With very little explanation, it chucks hotbars full of terms like «bonus action,» «cantrip,» spell slot," and so much more at players. If it feels like you missed a tutorial, you're not the only one, but in an interview with PC Gamer last week, Larian founder Swen Vincke contested that there is a tutorial in Baldur's Gate 3, just not a traditional step-by-step guide. It's all of Act 1.

It took me a few hours with Baldur's Gate 3 to fully come to a realization that is pretty dang obvious in hindsight—if you're playing in four-player co-op like I am, there's absolutely no room for more companions in your life.

A handful of game developers, meanwhile, have cautioned against oversimplifying the lesson, arguing that Baldur's Gate 3 is an anomaly that even big studios won't be able to replicate. As the video game community knows very well, there are times when video game developers and publishers set unrealistic expectations for their titles. They’ll set basic expectations about what they “need to sell,” which is usually fair. But then, some teams have “high expectations,” and when the game doesn’t reach them, they’ll say it “underperformed” even though it really didn’t. For the team at Larian Studios, they spent years with Baldur’s Gate 3 in Steam Early Access and had players helping them figure out what to fix and how to make the game better for when it finally launched.

Despite having only been in the hands of players for the best part of a week, talk is already moving on to whether or not Baldur's Gate 3 will possibly get any expansions in the near future. Baldur's Gate and its sequel both got pretty hefty expansions following their release on PC back in 1998 and 2000 respectively, though it seems like it may not be the same case for Baldur's Gate 3.

20 years ago, expansions for PC games were as commonplace as CD drives. If a game was a hit, it probably got an expansion—that was certainly the case for Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2, which both saw their stories continue in 20-hour-plus add-on adventures. When I heard Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 imposes a level cap of 12 out of D&D's possible 20, I thought that sounded like prime expansion setup to me. But Larian founder Swen Vincke says the studio isn't working on one, and it sounds unlikely (though not impossible) that it'll happen.

Well, Baldur’s Gate 3 certainly seems to be popular. As the Larian RPG game hits its full launch, there appears to be a huge spike in Steam outages. And based on our Baldur’s Gate 3 review, it only seems natural. Nevertheless, if you’re trying to access BG3 or get onto Valve’s store, you might encounter some hitches, as the new D&D-inspired hit brings in masses of new Baldur’s Gate 3 players.

Baldur's Gate 3 finally went into full release today, and with a whole new game to download and no preloading available, that meant every RPG fan in the world was crashing headlong into Steam to get their hands on it. And it's a big fella, too—122GB in all. But the good news for everyone is that Steam seems to be handling it well.
