Baldur’s Gate 3 is already one of Steam’s biggest games ever

You’ve probably heard of a number of games that use hand-painted elements - usually backgrounds. But what about a game where everything - every object, every background, every platform - was hand-painted? That’s what developer Pat Naoum did in The Master’s Pupil (the trailer of which you can watch below), and it took him a whopping seven years of painting to finish it.

Overnight, as promised, Larian Studios rolled out Baldur's Gate 3 hotfix 4. This patch, however, has now been rolled back due to unexpected issues.

Taking to Twitter some hours ago, Larian Studios' Creative Director Swen Vincke shared a short Baldur's Gate 3 update roadmap.

The release date for Assassin’s Creed Mirage has changed, but it’s not the bad news you might think. The game has not been delayed -- instead, it’s been announced the Ubisoft Bordeaux/Ubisoft Montreal title has already gone gold and will in fact be launching a week earlier than previously slated. I guess making a less expansive, old-school Assassin’s Creed has its benefits – you can actually get the game out on time!

Little-CRPG-that-could Baldur's Gate 3 has solved the Labyrinth, outwitted the Sphinx and ascended to the rank of Metacritic's highest-rated PC game of all time, knocking ZA/UM's Disco Elysium into second place. (OK, so technically they're both on 97, but I'm guessing the "score distillation" arithmetic behind-the-scenes puts Baldur's Gate 3 ahead - their positions were reversed last time I checked.) This follows a busy weekend for Larian's new game, which exceeded its own online player activity record on Sunday to the tune of around 875,000 players.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is now the top-rated videogame of all time according to one aggregator site, defeating legendary hits such as Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Elden Ring to reach the number-one spot. OpenCritic collates reviews (such as our own Baldur’s Gate 3 review) to form an overall score. BG3 is now top of the all-time chart, as it simultaneously becomes the highest-rated PC game ever on Metacritic, and Baldur’s Gate 3 players smash the RPG game’s Steam player record.

In a year where The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom came along and swept everyone off their feet not only with its astounding sales, but also with the universal praise it garnered, most would have imagined that it would be hard for another game to reach that same level. And yet, Larian Studios’ recently-released RPG sensation Baldur’s Gate 3 seems to be giving Nintendo’s open world title a run for its money- at least right now.

The Steam Deck lends itself well to giant RPGs such as Baldur’s Gate 3, as you can make good use of its suspend feature, allowing you to instantly pick up where you left off and chip away at the game.

Baldur's Gate 3 has continued setting new records on Steam in the wake of its massively successful launch, with its latest peak concurrent player count beating that of every other CRPG and turn-based game by a large margin.
