New beer Flawless Victory is the perfect pairing with Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1 made a splashy entrance in the UK's boxed games chart last week, debuting at number one. However, its combo has been broken early by EA Sports FC 24 which, predictably, arrives right at the top. Just over half of the physical copies sold in UK stores over the launch weekend were for PS5. NetherRealm's fighter is still holding its own, though, settling for second.

The Gfk has released its latest charts for weekly physical software sales in the UK (via GamesIndustry), and to no one’s surprise, EA Sports FC 24 has debuted on top of the charts, as reported previously. Though its physical launch sales are 30% lower than what FIFA 23 managed last year, it’s still the second-biggest launch in the UK for 2023, behind only The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It has also seen a slight year-on-year increase on the Switch in terms of physical launch sales. 

Mortal Kombat 1 players have spent the game’s early life experimenting with the new Kameo system, which lets you call in other characters to perform an action. Using Kameo characters, players are working out how to do elaborate combos that involve “juggling” their opponent with multiple hits. But this new combo from evil sorcerer Shang Tsung is perhaps the most ridiculous yet.

Some fighting game fans have a favourite side to play on, whether it's the left of the screen on the Player 1 side or the right of the screen as Player 2. While there is normally no gameplay advantage that comes from starting on either side, some players find input commands easier from the left or right. But when it comes to Mortal Kombat 1, it turns out there's a very good reason to pick Player 1.

This week saw several new entries in the UK boxed charts, with Mortal Kombat 1 taking the top spot.

Mortal Kombat 1 was the biggest new release of last week, and to no one’s surprise, it seems that the game has got off to a strong start where its sales are concerned. As per Gfk data for weekly physical software sales in the UK, shared by GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring on Twitter, Mortal Kombat 1 debuted on top of the charts. Its physical launch sales are down 38% from what Mortal Kombat 11 managed upon its launch in 2019, but physical sales trending downward is no surprise for any game at this point.
