The Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 is receiving strong criticism from some fans and reviewers ahead of its release on Tuesday.
The game isn’t on general sale until September 19, but early access is currently available for players who pre-ordered Mortal Kombat 1’s Premium Edition or Kollector’s Edition.
While NetherRealm Studios developed the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game, the PC and Nintendo Switch versions have been handled by QLOC and Shiver Entertainment / Saber Interactive respectively.
A number of players have taken to social media platforms and online forums over the past few days to highlight the graphical differences between the current-gen and Switch versions of Mortal Kombat 1.
While the Switch version was never expected to go toe to toe with the other ones visually, its graphical downgrades combined with significant performance issues have left some commenters questioning why Nintendo players are being asked to pay $70—the same amount as the game costs on other consoles—for what appears to be a clearly inferior product. Unlike in the US, in the UK, the Switch version is £5 cheaper than the game costs on Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
Crying at the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1, Why didn’t they just wait for the next gen switch console, the fact it costs 70$ is robbery
The Nintendo Switch 2 console will release in the last few months of 2024, and in two different models, according to rumors circulating online.
Since its launch in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has gone from strength to strength, even surpassing the sales of Nintendo's previous best-selling console in the US, the Wii. This becomes even more impressive due to the fact that it is massively underpowered compared to its two main rivals in the gaming console industry - PlayStation and Xbox. While it doesn't get exactly the same AAA titles as its rivals, it does have its own exclusives which are extremely popular, especially among young gamers. Nintendo recently held its Direct event where it showcased several games that are due to launch soon, despite the Switch now nearing the end of its life-cycle and the Switch 2 reportedly in development.
Mortal Kombat 1 made a splashy entrance in the UK's boxed games chart last week, debuting at number one. However, its combo has been broken early by EA Sports FC 24 which, predictably, arrives right at the top. Just over half of the physical copies sold in UK stores over the launch weekend were for PS5. NetherRealm's fighter is still holding its own, though, settling for second.
The Gfk has released its latest charts for weekly physical software sales in the UK (via GamesIndustry), and to no one’s surprise, EA Sports FC 24 has debuted on top of the charts, as reported previously. Though its physical launch sales are 30% lower than what FIFA 23 managed last year, it’s still the second-biggest launch in the UK for 2023, behind only The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It has also seen a slight year-on-year increase on the Switch in terms of physical launch sales.
Mortal Kombat 1 players aren't happy about the high price of DLC in the premium store and the lack of information about whether items can be earned in the Shrine or if they're exclusively DLC.
Mortal Kombat 1 players have spent the game’s early life experimenting with the new Kameo system, which lets you call in other characters to perform an action. Using Kameo characters, players are working out how to do elaborate combos that involve “juggling” their opponent with multiple hits. But this new combo from evil sorcerer Shang Tsung is perhaps the most ridiculous yet.
Some fighting game fans have a favourite side to play on, whether it's the left of the screen on the Player 1 side or the right of the screen as Player 2. While there is normally no gameplay advantage that comes from starting on either side, some players find input commands easier from the left or right. But when it comes to Mortal Kombat 1, it turns out there's a very good reason to pick Player 1.
This week saw several new entries in the UK boxed charts, with Mortal Kombat 1 taking the top spot.
Mortal Kombat 1 was the biggest new release of last week, and to no one’s surprise, it seems that the game has got off to a strong start where its sales are concerned. As per Gfk data for weekly physical software sales in the UK, shared by GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring on Twitter, Mortal Kombat 1 debuted on top of the charts. Its physical launch sales are down 38% from what Mortal Kombat 11 managed upon its launch in 2019, but physical sales trending downward is no surprise for any game at this point.
Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Switch Online will add Kirby & the Amazing Mirror on September 29, Nintendo announced.
It’s going from bad to worse for the embattled Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1. After fans critcised its visuals and $70 price tag, the official Mortal Kombat 1 Switch launch trailer has now come under fire for apparently using PC gameplay footage.
