Hogwarts Legacy was one of 2023’s more controversial releases, thanks to it being attached to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and her transphobic views, but it was, unsurprisingly, also among the biggest games of the year, something that’s been reflected in its sales as well.
Speaking in a recent interview with Variety, WB Games president David Haddad revealed that Hogwarts Legacy has sold over 22 million units worldwide across all platforms as of the end of 2023. The game sold over 2 million units over the December Holiday period, while one would imagine that the launch of its Switch port late into the year would also have contributed significantly to its year-end sales boost.
“It’s not just the unit sold that I’m so proud of, it’s just that it delighted the fans so much,” Haddad said. “It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story. And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks.”
At last count, WB Games announced in May that Hogwarts Legacy had sold over 15 million units, raking in over $1 billion in revenue, so it’s clearly kept up an impressive pace of sales. Job ads have indicated that developer Avalanche Software has another major AAA game in the works, and based on Hogwarts Legacy’s sales, it would seem safe to assume that their next projet is a sequel to the action RPG.
Hogwarts Legacy is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Read our review of the game through here.
Hogwarts Legacy has now sold 24 million copies since its release in February last year, publisher Warner Bros. has said.
The best-selling game of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy, has sold over 24 million units to date. The news came from Variety, which also outlined the ambitious plan Warner Bros. Discovery has for growth in the gaming space. The company values Harry Potter (the IP behind Hogwarts Legacy), Mortal Kombat (which has sold three million units since its debut last September), DC, and Game of Thrones franchises $1 billion each for their gaming potential, and it plans to capitalize on them all.
It’s no secret that Hogwarts Legacy was a huge revenue earner for Warner Bros. last year after becoming the best-selling title in the United States and the UK. However, after it sold over 22 million copies in 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently told Variety that it crossed 24 million sales.
After announcing that NetheRealm’s Mortal Kombat 1 nearly reached three million units sold last November, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed to Variety that it’s now reached that figure. The sequel launched in September 2023 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.
Here's your daily Palworld sales update: the open world survival crafting game with monster collection mechanics has now surpassed eight million units sold on Steam alone in less than a week from the early access launch. It also broke the two million concurrent players milestone on Valve's platform, a feat that was only ever managed by PUBG: Battlegrounds back when the Battle Royale game was at its height. There's still over a million difference between the two, but it would not be wise to discount Palworld at this point.
The dream continues for independent Japanese developer Pocketpair as Palworld has now sold over seven million units in just five days since its early access launch. The open world survival crafting game with monster collection mechanics had sold one million in eight hours, two in twenty-four, three in forty, five million in three days, and six in four days. What's even more impressive is that, according to Geoff Keighley, these sales are for the Steam version alone. They do not account for sales on the Microsoft Store via PC/Xbox, nor do they account for Game Pass player numbers.
Palworld just keeps going on an absolutely incredible ride toward the top. The 'Pokémon with guns' survival crafting game released last Friday by Japanese developer Pocketpair has now sold six million units in just four days. It has also surpassed 1.5 million concurrent Steam players, inching ever closer to the second spot on the all-time chart. Counter-Strike 2 managed 1.8 million nine months ago, around the time of its launch, but it's a free-to-play game. Moreover, at this rate, Palworld could very well blaze past it during the next weekend.
Palworld developer Pocketpair (previously known for Craftopia) must feel like they are on top of the world right now. Their new game, the so-called 'Pokémon with guns' survival crafting game, is topping Steam charts and breaking record after record. They sold one million units in eight hours, two million in twenty-four, and three million in forty hours since the game's launch this Friday.
Eye-catching 'Pokémon with guns' survival game Palworld has already sold a staggering 1m copies according to its developer Pocketpair, just hours into its early access launch on Steam and Xbox Series X/S. That's as the studio addresses the lack of 32-player dedicated servers on Xbox and PC Game Pass, saying the situation is «not up to us».
is set in the 1800s, long before any of the events in the series take place. Despite that, Hogwarts' magical campus is full of familiar names, but the familial relationships may not be obvious, especially for those who haven't read the books. Going through and seeing which characters from are related to characters from the novels can make the next playthrough a bit more interesting.
WB Games hasn’t always made the best use of the DC licenses as it could have, but that certainly seems to be an area that the company wants to expand its efforts in. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is due out under a month from now, while a Wonder Woman game – which, according to Warner, is not going to be a live service experience – is also in development.
Warner Bros. Games has announced that the Harry Potter action-RPG Hogwarts Legacy sold over 22 million copies by the end of 2023, with roughly 2 million of those sales over the December festive period. «But it’s not just the units sold that I’m so proud of, it’s just that it delighted the fans so much,» Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad told Variety.
