With mechs finally available for players to pilot, Helldivers 2 fans are already disappointed by the underwhelming launch of the EXO-45 exosuits within the game. The newest release from Arrowhead Game Studios has already seen massive success within just a month of its release, selling millions of units across its PC and PS5 versions. Arrowhead would report Helldivers 2 had sold 3 million units less than three weeks following its debut, becoming one of Steam's best-selling games. Now, a new addition to the game has left players conflicted.
While mechs in Helldivers 2 had been the subject of numerous leaks and datamines, Arrowhead just recently added the mech suits to the game tied to a new event. An event revealed by Arrowhead tasked players with liberating the planet of Tien Kwan, an objective that players quickly fulfilled to unlock mechs within the game. Helldivers 2 would subsequently debut the first of its pilotable mechs, the EXO-45 Patriot exosuits, available both in certain missions and for purchase from the Requisitions terminal. As reported by Dexerto, the debut of the playable mechs in Helldivers 2 has been met with some negative backlash from fans. One fan pointed out that the «spikey plants» within Helldivers 2 can damage or destroy the mechs, while another suggested the mechs are bugged to be able to hit themselves with rockets. One player even said that the mechs don't boast any more durability than in-game boxes.
While the launch of mechs has been largely seen as disappointing in Helldivers 2, fans did have plenty of suggestions about how to improve the exosuits. Many have called for an «upgrade» system for Helldivers 2's mechs, allowing fans to customize their mechs and add abilities like jumping and dashing. Some fans have suggested that an «explosion resistance» upgrade could help to combat the mech suits' natural fragility within the game. The ability to customize the weapons on Helldivers' mechs was also a popular request, with players choosing between miniguns, rocket launchers, and heavy artillery.
The early success of Helldivers 2 has already excited fans about what's to come in the future of the shooter. Arrowhead has continued to add new content to Helldivers 2 in the weeks following its launch, bringing additional weapons and gameplay mechanics to the shooter. When there are countless Automatons and Terminids swarming the galaxy, it stands to reason that taking them out will require some heavy firepower either shot from orbit or through the barrel of a gun. Having said that, sometimes a dedicated Helldiver just needs to get down and dirty, trading in an Eagle Strafing Run for the butt of their rifle.
