The wait may have been longer than some expected, but the free PlayStation Plus games for May 2024 are finally available for subscribers to claim. As always, the monthly free PlayStation Plus games are available to all subscribers, regardless of tier.
Monthly free games are the major selling point for the Essential tier of PlayStation Plus. PS Plus Essential gives subscribers access to some exclusive PlayStation Store discounts, online multiplayer, and, of course, monthly free games. PS Plus Extra and Premium are the tiers above Essential, so they get all of that in addition to a rotating selection of games.
Unlike the PS Plus Extra and Premium games, the monthly free games from the Essential tier can be kept forever as long as one stays subscribed to PS Plus. This applies to the free PS Plus games for May 2024 that subscribers can download right now, which are headlined by soccer game EA Sports FC 24, cyberpunk action-parkour game Ghostrunner 2, Zelda-style Soulslike Tunic, and the Lightfall expansion for Bungie's MMO/first-person shooter hybrid game Destiny 2. All of these games are playable for PS5 owners, whereas PS4 players can claim most of them but will have to miss out on Ghostrunner 2.
Typically, the free PS Plus games are available until the first Monday of the following month, but the May 2024 lineup has one exception to that rule. Ghostrunner 2, Tunic, and the Destiny 2: Lightfall expansion are all going to be available until Monday, June 3, as expected, but subscribers will actually have until June 17 to claim EA Sports FC 24 for their libraries. No reason for this discrepancy has been revealed, but it means that EA Sports FC 24 will still be up for grabs even when the rest of the May 2024 free games have been replaced by the June 2024 lineup.
As for when the free PS Plus games for June 2024 will be announced, PS Plus subscribers can count on the announcement happening on Wednesday, May 29. What the free games for June 2024 will be is anyone's guess. Sony has given away a wide range of games through PS Plus, so nearly everything is on the table.
There should be some more exciting PlayStation Plus updates between now and when the June 2024 free games are revealed. The PS Plus Extra and Premium games for June 2024 will likely be revealed within the next couple of weeks, so subscribers to the higher tiers have that to look forward to as well.
Sony's PlayStation 5 is part of the ninth console generation and debuted with a launch lineup that included Demon's Souls and Astro's Playroom. The console comes with a Blu-ray disc, although a digital-only edition is also available for a cheaper price.

A release date trailer has confirmed that day one game Galacticare is coming to Xbox Game Pass on May 23. While multiple games have already been added to the Xbox Game Pass lineup in May, only one of them was a day one release.
The Epic Games Store has updated its list of free games for May 2024 while confirming that next week will see the long-awaited return of the platform's mystery game promotion. Typically, Epic Games Store free game updates not only give users a fresh batch of freebies to claim, but they also let fans know what they will be able to add to their digital libraries the following week. The exception to the rule is when the Epic Games Store runs its mystery game promotions.
The newly-released day one PlayStation Plus Extra game Animal Well is now one of the highest-rated video games of the year. Compared to competitor Xbox Game Pass, it's relatively rare for PlayStation Plus Extra to add day one games. However, there are indeed times when PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers are treated to brand-new, day one releases, with some fantastic games added as day one releases in the past.
Bungie is giving all players access to several Destiny 2 expansions for a limited time. This is meant to help players prepare for the new Final Shape expansion coming in June. May’s first batch of PlayStation Plus games are now available to claim.
PlayStation Plus subscribers have one last chance to claim the free PS Plus games for April 2024, even though it's already May 6. New PlayStation Plus free games are rotated in on a monthly basis. The previous PS Plus free games are available until the first Tuesday of the following month, and so Monday, May 6 marks the last day that subscribers can snag the free games that were available in April 2024.
Sony recently added a free trial for one of the most controversial games of 2024 to PlayStation Plus Premium, meaning members of the service can give Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League a shot without having to spend a single extra penny. Though some may have preferred a more well-received game to be added instead, trials like these allow PlayStation Plus players to test out divisive games and make judgments for themselves on titles they may not have touched otherwise.
Unfortunately for PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers, it seems an additional seven games are leaving the service, bringing the total to a whopping 34 games that are on their way out. PlayStation Plus Extra games are removed on a monthly basis, but 34 is still a lot of games to see go removed all at one time. All 34 games are expected to be removed from the PlayStation Plus Extra tier on Tuesday, May 21.
