Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth seemingly includes a reference to Kingdom Hearts 2 and the sweet treat that all of Twilight Town seems to adore - the sea-salt ice cream.
As you'd expect considering they're both Square Enix properties and have crossed over with each other many times in the past, Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts like to include little easter eggs and references in one another's games, from mentions of Keyblades to Sora appearing as a summon in World of Final Fantasy. That tradition is alive and well in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Minor spoilers for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and some plot progression details below.
As pointed out by Noisy Pixel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth includes a subtle nod to a staple of the Kingdom Hearts series that started in Kingdom Hearts 2. After reaching the Gold Saucer section of the game and carrying on with the main story, you'll be tasked with finding Barret, which leads you to the Corel region of the map.
You're not the only one looking for Barret, though, as the Turks are also travelling to Corel. One of those Turks, Elena, ends up getting stuck in the desert and complains about the hot weather, eventually leading to her asking Rude for some ice cream to help with the heat. Later on in the game, a cutscene shows Elena eating an ice cream while in a helicopter, and it's one that fans will surely recognise.
If you take a close look at the ice cream that Elena is eating, you'll notice that it bears a striking resemblance to the sea-salt ice cream that was first shown as a favourite of the Twilight Town gang in Kingdom Hearts 2. It's not explicitly said to be a sea-salt ice cream, but the blue colouring of it indicates that it's the same.
There is a slight difference in shape between the ice cream that Elena is eating and the sea-salt ice cream shown in Kingdom Hearts (which is fatter and doesn't have the same lines etched into it), but it still appears to be the same.
It's not a huge reference to Kingdom Hearts and could just be coincidentally blue, but the light shade of it and how synonymous it is with Kingdom Hearts does make it seem like an intentional choice. And for a very starving fan base, it's the most substantial thing we've seen of the series in some time, so we'll just have to take it.

On Xbox, Final Fantasy 14 will have its own currency for service fees and optional item purchases.
In the world of video game soundtracks, you can’t get much more iconic than Nobuo Uematsu. Most well-known for composing soundtracks for the first nine Final Fantasy games, the musician has gone on to write tracks for many subsequent entries to the franchise, most recently penning the tearjerking theme song for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, No Promises to Keep.
Bringing the once-doomed MMO Final Fantasy XIV back to life and directing the latest mainline title of the long-running franchise isn’t enough for Square Enix superstar Naoki Yoshida. In a new interview with Famitsu, Yoshida chatted at length about his desire to direct yet another major game for Square Enix.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake project trilogy will be console-exclusive to PlayStation, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of second- and third-party content ventures and strategic initiatives Christian Svensson.
Despite only just getting the eagerly-anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth out the door, Square Enix is already hard at work on the conclusion of the Remake trilogy. And while we wouldn't expect to hear anything substantial for a few years yet, we're already anticipating what comes next, and it seems we aren't alone in these.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been a huge success and is 2024’s highest-rated game on Metacritic at the time of writing. However, despite the praise there is one part of the game that needs a little tweak as players have noted that in Performance mode the lighting may be a little off.
Players have been gushing about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth since its launch last week, and there’s a good reason for that: the game is incredible by all meaningful accounts. Just as important, the title expanded upon the game’s lore, world, and more to ensure that gamers had the best experience within it. Remember, the original “remake” title was set entirely within Midgar, with the team at Avalanche only getting out of the city after a clash with Sephiroth. However, while the Square Enix team did make the world vast, they ensured that there was still plenty to explore within the next entry, which will finish the story.

Square Enix released the hugely anticipated action RPG Final Fantasy VII Rebirth last Thursday, garnering widespread critical acclaim. Our Kai Powell gave it a perfect score:
To celebrate the launch of , developer and publisher Square Enix unveiled a new look at . Given that both games hail from the studio, they share a great deal of the same DNA given that several characters have appeared throughout Sora's adventures. The villainous Sephiroth, who is taking center stage in, is even available as a so-called «Super Boss» in the original .
If you’re getting ready to start your Final Fantasy VII Rebirth adventure, let me offer you fair warning: it is a long game. If you’re planning to do every sidequest, minigame, and Chadley combat battle, you’ll be wandering around Gaia for 100 hours. That’s not an exaggeration; I hit credits in 73 hours and I still had a massive checklist of side content to complete.
