Baldur's Gate 3's Epilogue Heavily Hints At A Sequel

Baldur's Gate 3's new epilogue just dropped in the latest patch, finally giving the characters some much-needed closure. We'll go light on spoilers for individual character interactions since these will be largely personalised to how your playthrough went down. But regardless of your actions, almost every epilogue has one thing in common - a lot of teasing for a sequel.
Withers is the worst offender for this. When bringing the party to a close, the loveable skeleton/God of Death toasts you and your companions. He gives a grand speech, wrapping things up in a nice bow - before making it clear that our adventuring days probably aren't over yet, and that we should enjoy this respite while we can.
"It is over... for now," says Withers, raising his cup to the saviours of Baldur's Gate. "Thou played thy part in weaving the fabric of fate itself. But for every thread you sewed, so did the gods unravel another."
He continues, making it clear that everyone's stories are far from over. "Sleep, rest, revel. But be ready, for thou mayest yet be needed. Until we meet again, I wish thee every possible fortune. Health, wealth, love, and above all, problems worth solving."
So, what the hell is he on about? For starters, it definitely seems like this won't be the last time we see these characters. Sure, he could just be referring to the fact that they could all get up to lots of fun off-screen. But the whole epilogue seems massively geared towards the player, not necessarily our character, so it certainly seems that this is a message for us.
Can't get the epilogue to trigger on an old save? We got it to work by booting up a save file from just before the Netherbrain fight.
In practical terms that could mean we're either getting a story expansion further down the line or a full-blown sequel. Admittedly, it's hard to see how Baldur's Gate 4 could be built from these characters when they all end up with widely different fates in each playthrough, so perhaps a direct sequel in the form of DLC is more likely. There is precedent for this - the story of the first two games was wrapped up in a shorter expansion, Throne of Bhaal. As well as tying up some loose ends, it gave us one last journey with anyone who had stuck around with us to the end.
If we do get a Baldur's Gate 4 at some point, the BG3 gang could always appear in it, just not as main characters. Jaheira, Minsc, Viconia and Saverok are all returning characters, so it's workable.
In any case, let's hope the follow-up to Baldur's Gate 3 is a while off yet. We have enough to get through in the base game, and I think the folks over at Larian deserve a nice, long holiday after all of these patches. The latest patch alone added around 3,500 lines of dialogue, and the
