Insomniac are putting a lot of extra detail in to Spider-Man 2 to make the open world feel more alive, and that includes being able to jump on the rides on Coney Island and take spin. Project manager Jeannette Lee spoke to Golem and was asked about her thoughts open “future of open-world superhero games”.
“It’s not necessarily about expanding a metropolis even further,” said Lee, “It’s about making the moments better, creating more exciting situations. We want players to enjoy every moment, but also to complete the story. The Coney Island amusement park in Spider-Man 2 is a good example of this. You can ride rides and get to know the place, especially if you’ve never been there before.”
“By the way, we built this environment during the Corona pandemic and it was almost a kind of vacation for all of us!” she adds.
Insomniac popped up during the September PlayStation State of Play stream to show off more of Spider-Man 2, and the open world gameplay in particular.
There’s some interesting new touches for the open world gameplay in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. With both Peter Parker and Miles Morales now playable characters, you’re able to switch between the two pretty much at will and almost instantly, the game fading to black and then fading back in with the other character.
That will come into play when picking up certain incidental missions in the world, with community missions that might be able to take on with either of the heroes, or to ask for a specific Spider-Man.
Don’t be expecting to look for mission markers on your map, though. There’s more dynamic ways that missions and side content will appear in the world. You might see some of Kraven’s drones fly past you, symbols being beamed into the sky by another villain and more, each drawing you to a particular activity. At the same time, when you do have missions to choose between, you’ll be kept within the world using a new AR view that overlays waypoints and markers on the world.
The general traversal is enhanced with new web wings which, alongside the traditional web-swinging will really open up more low-rise areas like Queens and Coney Island for fast and fluid exploration.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is out on 20th October 2023, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
