It’s been a pretty great gamescom for Warhammer. Now, Howard confirms that maybe he should have brought up the topic of The Elder Scrolls 6 a little differently.

BioWare is a large studio known for titles such as Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age: Inquisition. It appears that all is not well at the studio, as on August 23, it announced that it is “eliminating approximately 50 roles.”

In a blog post that studio manager Gary McKay said was «deeply painful and humbling to write,» BioWare announced that it is laying off roughly 50 employees in order to «preserve the health of the studio and better enable us to do what we do best: create exceptional story-driven single-player experiences filled with vast worlds and rich characters.»

Bandai Namco just confirmed that a third Little Nightmares installment is underway, but that’s not all. But I’d argue that one of the most important elements of Mortal Kombat’s success, especially since Mortal Kombat 9, has been its single player offerings, which is one thing that we haven’t really seen out of the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1. Until now, that is. At a recent event, I got to go hands-on with the first chapter of Mortal Kombat 1’s cinematic story mode, as well as its brand-new Invasion mode, and my early impressions are that NetherRealm doesn’t seem to be loosening its grip on the crown as the king of fighting game single-player modes just yet.

The misfits-on-a-road-trip genre arguably began bloody ages ago, it's true, but I think it's really been building momentum over the last few years with stuff like Signs Of The Sojourner, Hitchhiker, and even Road 96. Red Thread Games, who made Draugen (a horror game I liked quite a bit), are adding to the list with Dustborn, a single-player action-adventure with a heavy lean towards story, which was revealed at this year's Gamescom Opening Night Live.

There are a lot of first-person shooters on the market, but not many of them focus on a single-player adventure. Immortals of Aveum does just that and changes things up from the norm by using Unreal Engine 5.1 to power the experience. Ascendant Studios was created under the EA Originals banner and has aimed to make a story-driven FPS with a magic-centric attack system in a fantasy-style setting, but in a modern-ish world. The world of Aveum is a bit different as even at the start, you have a pair of mischief-makers in Jak and Luna interrupting a play to steal some money and try to make the most of their lives instead of being a so-called “bridgerat”.

Much like the waistband of MacGyver’s trousers, Immortals of Aveum is a gun-free zone. This may sound like a peculiar predicament for a first-person shooter to place itself in, but developer Ascendant Studios has made it work. How, you ask? Magic. And I’m not being facetious here; I mean, literal barrages of brightly-coloured bullets magically blasted from the fingertips of a bloke who really puts the war in warlock. An unexpected collision of traditional high fantasy adventure with slick FPS action, Immortals of Aveum boasts a wonderful backdrop for its classy combat and comes with everything I crave in a modern shooter: it’s striking to look at, sturdy to play, and it’s strictly single-player only.

Erenshor is an upcoming MMO inspired by the classics of the late '90s and early 2000s - specifically Runescape if you're judging by the art style - but there's a massive differentiator: it's single-player and thus isn't actually an MMO at all. In place of real human players, Erenshor instead has "persistent simulated players" that will "get to know you," invite you to raids, and journey right alongside you just like the real thing.

I remember when Mortal Kombat launched in 1992, or rather, I remember when it was ported to consoles in 1993. I was six at the time, but it was impossible to avoid the media fervor around its ultra-violence. My parents didn’t bat an eye when I rented it. My mother’s reaction to seeing me play it was to just ask if it was that game everyone was talking about. Then she continued with her day.

The Elder Gods were pretty useless in both Mortal Kombat timelines. In the original trilogy, they kinda just sat back and allowed Shao Kahn to decimate entire civilizations, even invading Earthrealm despite losing the Mortal Kombat tournament. When they do get off their asses to do something, it's usually already too late. And that's not to get into the whole Shinnok ordeal. Long story short, they drop the ball a lot.
