Immortals of Aveum

Diablo Immortal’s latest update goes live tomorrow, with the Trial of the Hordes Unleashed PvP event, other returning events, Battlegrounds and matchmaking changes, and more.

Ascendant Studios has released its second update for Immortals of Aveum, bringing some much-needed fixes. Future updates are coming to add more options and features requested by players. For now, PC players can look forward to increased range for mouse sensitivity to set it lower. Console players who found the brightness too dark or bright should also see this fixed.

Before Diablo 4 came out, Blizzard had concerns that their latest ARPG would tank the popularity of their most recent entry in the series, Diablo Immortal, Blizzard's franchise general manager Rod Fergusson tells RPS. Immortal, which launched last year as a free-to-play MMO game, left quite a bad taste in our mouths when it launched on PC, especially when it came to the prohibitively high cost of its various microtransactions. Despite this, though, the game's continued to enjoy great success over on mobile, but even Blizzard weren't sure whether its popularity would last once Diablo 4 arrived.

Ascendant Studios and EA’s Immortals of Aveum is out now, and reviews for the single player magic shooter have been lukewarm at best. And as it turns out, impressions on the game’s technical performance aren’t exactly glowingly positive either.

It’s been a whirlwind of a week for us at TSA, with a big part of that down to two of us being at Gamescom. We’ve played so many games that it’s hard to pick the best ones out, but I’m very excited for Bellwright, Mudrunner Expeditions and Mortal Kombat 1.

Immortals of Aveum offers up a rather unique combat system that combines magical first-person shooting with a variety of different spells and traversal abilities. Aveum’s action can take a while to get used to and there are a number of mechanics the game doesn’t explain particularly clearly, but don’t worry, we’re here to help you out. The new magical FPS Immortals of Aveum gives players a wide array of abilities to help them out in combat, with some of the most powerful being the Fury spells. These special magical attacks can be activated by consuming mana crystals, and most of them are obtained by default as you make your way through the main campaign. That said, there are a pair of optional Furies, which are two of the most effective in the game. One of these is the Green Timeburst Fury spell, which offers exactly what it sounds like – the ability to slow down time so you can better deal with particularly frantic combat scenarios. Can Ascendant Studios add a little magic to the FPS genre? Maybe… but maybe not.

There is a familiarity when playing Immortals of Aveum. Sure, the characters and setting are new but it is a game that generally treads safely. That’s no bad thing, and that familiarity feels welcome, though it is mixed with the thought that Immortals of Aveum is just short of being elevated to the top of its genre. Armies are at war, the world is moving towards destruction, and you are the unexpected hero that could bring the Everwar to an end.
