Indie studio Evil Empire is teaming up with a host of other indie developers for a new showcase. Set for April 10 at 5pm GMT, the showcase has been dubbed the Triple-i Initiative, and will feature more than 30 indie games.

One thing I’ve always appreciated about gaming is the iterative nature of the industry. When one game cracks a good idea, it tends to trickle down to others in creative ways. There’s a sense that developers are always in conversation with one another, riffing off of each other’s ideas in search of something that feels truly fresh.

I'm ending a week packed with Steam Next Fest demos on a high note with Gatekeeper, a top-down bullet hell roguelike clearly inspired by Risk of Rain. Pick a character, drop into a medley of environments, and shoot dudes while hoovering up items until the number stops getting bigger. It's a familiar formula with a new perspective, and while there are some mechanical and artistic similarities to Risk of Rain and its sequel, Gatekeeper feels like it's found its own identity.

Hopoo Games has released a new patch for Risk of Rain Returns, focusing on bug fixes. It addresses crashes relating to text rendering in specific languages, Huntress’s alternate secondary attack when playing online and Acrid’s bubble if it touched an allied Bramble’s head.

What is it? An update to the classic action-roguelike with a few new elements in the mix.

If you, like me, are basically always hungry for another fast-paced horde shooting roguelike with crazy items and combos to build, I've got great news. Upcoming roguelite shooter Gatekeeper is just that, and it has a pretty dang generous free demo slash prologue version out now that's fully-featured enough to include cooperative gameplay.

Equipment is the utility option that further aids your character besides the main skills and some of the best offensive and defensive items in Risk of Rain Returns. You can always carry one equipment at a time, and it can be manually activated, just like skills in the game.

Surviving in Risk of Rain Returns becomes impossible as difficulty scales and stronger enemy types and bosses start to appear and hunt you down. You will need to equip some of the best offensive items in the game to keep clearing stages and continue looping. Weaker items will only weigh you down and get you killed in the long run.

Defeating bosses, looping stages, and acquiring powerful items or the stacks of existing ones are the core gameplay elements in Risk of Rain Returns. Having the best defensive items bolsters your chances of surviving anything the game throws at you, and without these, any build is prone to fail, and your character will die as difficulty spikes.

Roguelikes: god, there's a lot of 'em, and thank god for that. The line between roguelike and roguelite is razor-thin, and within that nebulous gray area, you'll find more genre mash-ups than once thought possible. The best roguelikes might be action games, shooters, card games, strategy games, deck-builders, rhythm games, platformers, Metroidvanias in disguise, brawlers, dungeon-crawlers, or some seemingly absurd mix of these and other design principles. 

Survivors are the core gameplay value in Risk of Rain Returns, as each of these 14 characters comes with unique skills offering versatile builds and playstyles. At the same time, you start with two characters, Hunter and Commando; the rest of the roster needs to be unlocked.

Risk of Rain Returns features secret survivors and stages that require players to go the extra mile to unlock them. While each stage in the game houses secrets, items, and Artifacts for the players to find, locating Boar Beach is pure luck.

Risk of Rain Returns is one of the coolest remakes I’ve ever played. It takes everything that was so good about the original and upgrades it. Rather than just being the same game again but with a new lick of paint, it fuses different aspects of Risk of Rain 2 onto the original, shines up the visuals and the music, and even adds in a few new things as well. The result is a game that’s highly replayable and thoroughly enjoyable.

An indie roguelite classic proudly rides again in. Now under the umbrella of Gearbox Entertainment, Hopoo Games’ original came out a full decade ago, back during the burgeoning roguelite renaissance and two years after hit PCs. Like, it proved a crucial hit in the indie space over time, and even perpetuated certain standards and tropes which would find their way into later roguelites, including the studio’s own massively successful sequel. served as an expanded 3D take on its predecessor, but is a formal remake, functionally reinvigorating a ten-year-old essential roguelite while carefully retaining its crucial essence.

The Strange Battery in can be hard to find, but players who manage it will be well rewarded. That being said, its purpose is not immediately obvious, but persistence is the key. Players will have an opportunity to discover the secrets that the Strange Battery is hiding behind its simple veneer.

Risk of Rain Returns is quite familiar with strange and obscure item unlocks across the board, but not all of its features are as weird as the Robomando. Some of them, like the Keycards, are rather straightforward, in fact, and easier to use than you’d think!

There are multiple characters you can unlock as you progress through Risk of Rain Returns. Many of these characters are listed on the main roster screen, but there is a hidden one you can unlock called the Robomando.

The Providence Trials are a featured added to Risk of Rain Returns, giving you the opportunity to expand the abilities of each character. The Providence Trials come with set requirements, and you will need to rise to the challenge of completing them to unlock these skills.

There are several characters for you to unlock that you can use in Risk of Rain Returns. Each character comes with a unique set of skills, with the Pilot being brand new to the Risk of Rain franchise.

While Hopoo Games’ Risk of Rain Returns is a faithful remaster of the original, it offers new content and options for those who enjoyed Risk of Rain 2. Unfortunately, there’s no horizontal aiming, so it’s difficult to precisely hit shots.

A new Risk of Rain game is in development, and here comes the enormous but attached to that news: it's a free-to-play mobile gacha game in the works at a new studio under the series' new owner, Gearbox Publishing.

The original Risk Of Rain was a chaotic, 2D sidescroller about turning a tiny character into a wandering projectile swarm. It's sequel mimicked the systems but switched from pixel art to 3D - and in my eyes lost a little of its readability in the process.

Gearbox has announced a new DLC for co-op roguelike action game Risk of Rain 2. Titled Seekers of the Storm, the DLC will be the second expansion for the game, and was announced alongside an animated trailer focusing on its story and new character.

Gearbox Publishing celebrated 10 years of Risk of Rain today with an announcement for Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds, a free-to-play action RPG roguelike for mobile devices.

Risk of Rain 2 keeps on trucking. After last year's Survivors of the Void expansion added two new survivors and a smattering of new items and stages, Gearbox is following it up with Seekers of the Storm, which will again include «new survivors, new levels, and monsters, and more.» The most notable bit of the «more» this time is almost certainly a new villain named The False Son, who is born out of some deep deep Risk of Rain lore I had no idea existed.

The original 2D Risk of Rain was released on November 8, 2013, and it's still one of the best roguelikes you can play today. 10 years later, an expanded remake appropriately named Risk of Rain Returns is bringing the game up to speed with a fresh coat of paint and a big bag of new content, and it's launching on PC and Switch on the game's big anniversary: November 8, 2023. 

The Risk of Rain team has been quiet these past few months, but they’ve finally come forward with more information. We have new, confirmed details of the final survivor, the Pilot, and we now have an official release date for the game.
