Lego has announced two new Lego Animal Crossing sets.

It’s been more than a year since the Nintendo 3DS eShop shut down, but players will soon be able to access their library of 3DS games from their iPhone thanks to a new emulator. Mimicking the 3DS's iconic design, it will offer a split-screen view for players to dive into the Nintendo games on the go, putting well-loved games like on Apple's smart devices.

It has been the end of an era for the 3DS and Wii U, but the functionality of the Nintendoconsoles’ games may now be better protected than many initially thought. Considering the widespread repercussions, it is easy to see the recent shutdown of online services tied to the consoles as Nintendo destroying the childhood of many people. However, action has been taken to combat the dire effect that this will have on many beloved games, and save them from their fates.

Wii U fans have brought the console's online multiplayer functionality back online, after Nintendo officially ended its own server support.

With the end of 3DS and Wii U online support, Animal Crossing fans are mourning their final moments of New Leaf connectivity. Many Animal Crossing fans have stayed active on New Leaf, but many features have been closed off due to the end of 3DS Online.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS DLC can no longer be re-downloaded, following the system's eShop closure. Super Smash Bros. has been considered a staple of gaming history since the original 1999 game's release, and the 3DS and Wii U versions were a massive hit. Though the Switch has been Nintendo's priority for a long time now, the closure of the eShop for the 3DS and Wii U systems made it clear that Nintendo was finished with the previous console generation. However, the preservation of the company's legacy titles may be at stake as a consequence.

Yesterday, 8th April, saw the end of an era. Nintendo closed down the online services for its 3DS and Wii U consoles.

Nintendo will be shutting down online play for 3DS and Wii U early next week.

Nintendo will be discontinuing online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U consoles at 4pm PDT on April 8, 2024. While it had previously closed the eShop for these devices, which stopped players from further downloading any DLC for their games, this new server shutdown will impact many actual games, as it will remove online play, internet rankings, and anything that involves data distribution.

This is just a quick reminder that Nintendo 3DS and Wii U online services will be discontinued next Monday, 8th April.

Cyan Worlds today announced plans to launch their fancy real-time 3D remake of Riven later this year, coming with support for both VR cybergoggles and standard meatspace screens. Riven: The Sequel To Myst was the 1997 sequel to Myst, the 1993 pre-rendered adventure game which sold a million CD-ROM drives and launched a thousand specks of spittle from John Walker's mouth. The remake previously had a longwinded name of its own, Riven: New Discoveries Of The Lost D'ni Empire, but now is simply named Riven. They should rebrand again and call it Riven: The Sequel To The Myst Remake.

Nintendo has confirmed release dates for two of its upcoming Nintendo Switch titles.

Roughly one year after Nintendo closed the e-store for the 3DS the company has now caused the leading 3DS emulator, Citra, to cease development, creating a vacuum for the console’s game preservation and access. The end of Citra is collateral damage resulting from the latest of Nintendo’s aggressive litigation decisions. This is an inarguably tragic result for game preservation. Fans with the resources to purchase increasingly expensive 3DS hardware and game titles on the secondary market do nothing to financially benefit either Nintendo or the original publishers. Nintendo has harmed access to games it has no financial stake in.

The shutdown of Switch emulator Yuzu has also led to the shutdown of 3DS emulator Citra, in a move upsetting some advocates of game preservation.

The original Monster Hunter Stories has been announced for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PC.

In a public statement, Nintendo said that owners of the 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, and New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL) systems in Japan will end once the company runs out of the necessary parts. While no direct timetable was given for when Nintendo would run out of 3DS parts it has in stock, the company recommended that any users needing a fix to their system should reach out as soon as possible.

There's never been word of a follow-up or port, but new information suggests that could be subject to change.

Earlier this year, Nintendo ended eShop functionality for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, marking the beginning of the end for these devices. Now, Nintendo has announced that online play and other device functionality that requires online communication is coming to an end, too.
