Nintendo will reveal the successor to its popular Switch handheld, the Switch 2, in March 2024, if rumors are to be believed. The Japanese gaming giant's partners are already making moves in connection to the upcoming reveal, according to insider sources.
Since its launch in 2017, the Switch has become one of the most successful video game consoles ever released, with Nintendo revealing last December that the system had sold more than 139 million units. While developers were reportedly given the opportunity to take a look at a Switch 2 during Gamescom last August, Nintendo has not officially announced this rumored successor yet. The company, however, could be set to reveal this new console very soon.
In the latest episode of their podcast, YouTuber and known Nintendo insider Nate the Hate claimed that they believed the Japanese juggernaut would announce the Switch 2 in March. Nintendo could use the Game Developers Conference (GDC) that will be held that month in San Francisco to show off the Switch 2 and talk with partners, Nate the Hate told their guest, fellow content creator John Linneman from Digital Foundry. GDC is one of the biggest gaming conventions in the world, and this year's event is expected to draw in up to 30,000 attendees, according to event producer Informa.
Outlet Universo Nintendo claimed that it was able to corroborate Nate the Hate's statements through sources who added that multiple companies and Nintendo publishing partners are already preparing to announce their projects, while some retail stores are setting up for the Switch 2's pre-sales. A recently published survey showed that a number of developers have started working on games for the Switch's successor.
Last month, Reddit users spotted a Nintendo Switch 2 product page on the website of retailer Meccha Japan. Aside from noting a 2024 release window, the listing did not provide any details regarding the system. Analysts predict that the Switch 2, which is expected to be priced at around $400, will feature a few upgrades but will still be quite similar to the original console. Like the base version of the Switch, the Switch 2 will have an LCD screen, analysts believe.
With the Switch 2 now expected to be revealed in March, 2024 is shaping up to be a very big year for Nintendo. Several games are set to be released for the first Switch this year, such as the first-party titles Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Princess Peach: Showtime, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. A rumored Nintendo Direct that will supposedly take place this February will likely reveal more major developments for 2024.
