Resident Evil 4's Remake Tops 7 Million Sales Milestone | Push Square

Sony president Hiroki Totoki will today step into his new role as PlayStation CEO following Jim Ryan's retirement after a more than 30-year tenure at the company. While retaining his duties across the wider business, Totoki's main objective will be to aid the search for a true successor to Jim Ryan while defining «the next chapter of PlayStation's future».

Legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu will compose the central theme for the as-yet-unnamed third game in Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, tentatively committing to the job after being put on the spot by Rebirth director Tetsuya Nomura.

Sony has announced that the slimmer variant of the PlayStation 5 console, which first launched in the US in November last year, will be available in India, starting April 5. Both the disc and digital editions of PS5 slim will go on sale in the country this week, with stock availability at participating retailers confirmed. PS5 slim, a lighter and thinner version of the original console, retains much of the PlayStation 5 design language, but comes with a detachable disc drive and slightly bigger storage.

Close to a colossal 4,000 PS5 and PS4 games are on sale in Sony’s epic Spring Sale, which is rolling out at the time of writing and scheduled to run through 24th April. A second phase of deals will be added to the current crop on 10th April, potentially making this one of the biggest PS Store promotions in history.

Outgoing Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, has revealed that the PlayStation 2 has continued to be the best-selling console for the company. Ryan revealed in a recent episode of the official PlayStation Podcast that the PS2 has sold 160 million units worldwide.

Several major games released at the same time last week, and though most have made it into the latest weekly Japanese sales charts released by Famitsu, the one that’s topped the charts might not be the one many would have expected. Princess Peach: Showtime! sits on top of the charts, beating out both Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Rise of the Ronin.

Just over a year ago, Shinji Mikami - he of directing the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4 fame - was confirmed to be leaving Tango Gameworks, the studio that he had co-founded over a decade earlier to create a modern successor to his survival-horror classics, The Evil Within.

Rise of the Ronin, the latest tentpole PS5 console exclusive from legendary Japanese developer Team Ninja, has been subject to a colossal marketing push in Asia, where posters and billboards have been spotted around cities such as Taipei for several weeks now. That’s all culminated in an Edo period art exhibition in Huashan 1914 Creative Park – coincidentally, the former home of a Japanese sake manufacturer– where Sony has installed several 19th-century props inspired by the game.

Prior to its release, few predicted PS Portal would be successful. Many were baffled by Sony’s decision to release the Remote Play handheld, which streams gameplay directly from a PS5. But as the months wear on, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Sony’s added a permanent fixture to its hardware portfolio, with the device exceeding expectations.

It's been on sale for just under a month, but Balatro has already reached a huge sales milestone. After reaching the 500,000 mark after only 10 days, the indie roguelike has now doubled that figure, now having sold over a million copies.

One of the big stories this year so far has been Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s relative underperformance in its home territory of Japan. Historically one of the region’s most popular franchises, the Square Enix sequel couldn’t even outsell fellow PS5 console exclusive Final Fantasy 16 in its first week on the market – a surprise considering its strong critical reception.
