Resident Evil 4 Remake Finally Lets You Unlock Leon's RE2 Outfit In Separate Ways

Resident Evil 4 Remake is a triumph from Capcom, a truly dark and grueling version of the action horror game that redefined the genre. While the game hasn’t had the same staying power as the original so far, it’s understandable, given that it’s much more focused on providing a challenging modern Resident Evil experience.

Resident Evil is one of the key pillar franchises for Capcom. This series has spanned across several console generations at this point. We’ve seen mainline installments continue to come out into the marketplace alongside spinoffs. However, as of late, we’ve started to see Capcom embrace the older games. A few remakes have managed to make their way out into the marketplace for modern platforms. The question some fans have now is if we’ll see this trend continue and if a remake for Resident Evil 5 is in the works. 

This year's Resident Evil 4 is one of the greatest remakes of all time, but purists — or at least those who had already played the PS2 version — will tell you it was still missing something. When the Nintendo GameCube original was ported to Sony's second home system, it came bundled with new campaigns all about side character Ada Wong. Separate Ways was the most important of the bunch, and six months after the PS5, PS4 remake's release, it's back as DLC for Capcom's newest masterpiece. 18 years later, it has the same effect: Separate Ways meaningfully expands the Resident Evil 4 story and provides a tantalising reason to return to one of the best games ever.

When Capcom released its slick remake of Resident Evil 4 in March, it felt like something was missing. The action survival-horror game was a robust package, but some memorable moments had been excised from the GameCube original. With Separate Ways, a new add-on starring enigmatic super spy Ada Wong, Resident Evil 4 feels complete — and then some.

As fantastic as Resident Evil 4’s remake is, one of the most conspicuous absences from its original release was Ada Wong’s side story – it was such a key part of the HD version of the original game, after all. Thankfully, in this age of delays and over-hype, we haven’t had to wait too long for Capcom to complete the story, and the quality and replayability of this version of Separate Ways has been well worth the wait.

The Separate Ways DLC releases alongside another update for Resident Evil 4 Remake, adding a new stage and three new characters to Mercenaries Mode. Finally, you’ll be able to play as Ada Wong and Wesker in Mercenaries, blasting swarms of villagers and utilizing their unique abilities to rack up thousands of points. After downloading the update, Ada Wong will be unlocked automatically. But, there’s an alternate Ada you can unlock alongside the all-powerful Wesker.

The Resident Evil 4 remake was a hit, as it should be. This particular installment for the Resident Evil franchise was incredibly popular upon its release and remains one of the more cherished installments. However, the remake is now giving fans who missed out on the original release a chance to try it out. Likewise, veteran players are getting a chance to replay the game with a modern touch. With that said, there was a glaring omission from the remake release, and that was the missing Separate Ways DLC. 

Resident Evil 4 sure knows how to set the tone: the remake’s intro sees Leon slowly advancing through creepy woods and rotting, ominous houses, culminating in the horrifying crescendo that is the infamous village attack. But with that groundwork already laid, The Separate Ways DLC has no need for such a slow build-up, and smartly wastes very little time shifting into high gear: we’re put up against an extremely imposing boss mere minutes after taking control of Ada Wong, the star of this show. In fact, though it only took me just over four hours to complete this side story’s seven chapters, Separate Ways rarely wastes a moment of your time, and proves to be a highly entertaining roller coaster that includes some very satisfying new takes on ideas from its original 2005 inspiration.

Fortunately, with the confirmation that we’ll get Ada Wong’s campaign, it came with a launch date relatively close to its announcement.
